  1. Could you save the most perfect answer for the end of the thread? I'm trying to get some things going here. It's almost Opening Day and we're going to be good now, time to break out of the NSBB wasteland funk the site has been in for years.
  2. If the Cubs don't make the playoffs this year, it's because _________.
  3. I think there's not really any chance they do it.
  4. I think if our cobs don't win anything this year, it'll be the pitching's fault. If it does what it's supposed to do, we're golden. But it's pitching, so WTF knows.
  5. I know it's mostly my attitude/personality, but every year at this time I find myself hating some crummy fringe player just because holy balls I am tired of seeing them overrated. I can't wait for Matt Szczur's DFA so I quit having to hear about how he can be a useful 5th outfielder. It's kinda cool to see our depth absorb what's actually been a bit of an annoying spring injury-wise. None of our stars are hurt (except Lester, whom I still quite nervous about, they are absolutely babying his shoulder for a reason), but a lot of our secondary guys are banged up. It doesn't really hurt us because there's so much redundancy, although one more SP going down starts to get into the problem zone. I think I'm coming down on Bryant in LF, mostly because I really don't care for Coghlan. The last time he had a decent year, he followed it up with -1.4 fWAR over the next four. If you put Bryant in LF, Olt can be the weak link in the lineup and we have just disgusting power top to bottom. I'm really excited by the possibility of Rizzo batting second.
  6. He's right. We're going to have so much power and so many Ks/low OBP.
  7. Nothing that'd make me laugh about the trade over. Oh sorry, next time I giggle about something I'll be sure to ask myself if it would meet your esteemed standards first. Didn't say you couldn't, just said I wouldn't.

  9. Really? There's only one player on that list that we're pretty sure is an above-average major leaguer, and he's still a middle reliever. It was a good trade, but it doesn't strike me as giggle-worthy. Guys can have significant value without having to be pretty sure they're above average major leaguers. They *can*, but I'm not particularly expecting it. Grimm is middling and those kinds of relievers don't typically stick around for long. Olt is still negative WAR for his time here. And Edwards is a pitcher with a history of arm problems, so who knows if we'll ever see anything from him.

  11. I also like Bernstein in a limited way. He's not always right or as smart as he thinks he is, but he does better than most sports media personalities. And the bits he and Boers do are pretty funny, imo. It's just the stupid "letting idiotic callers through and yelling at them" bit that is completely unlistenable. I assume it tests really well and other people love it or something, but I just turn off the radio until they're done.
  12. I was thinking the same thing.
  13. Yes. Slowly rehabbing a sore shoulder.
  14. For the Rays, who were awarded him via the tampering case.
  15. I can't decide whether this makes me really, really want to listen to his show today or just avoid it forever.
  16. I thought Brett had already decided for Cub fandom and we were stuck with Sparkles.
  17. Bernstein has always been this way, but it's a little more intense lately. He's gone to a weird place.
  18. I actually like Keith Law, but it's still fun to go back and read this now. I'd wait until Hendricks does it in the majors, in games that matter, over a decent sample, before I spike that particular football.
  19. Why should the union, Rosenthal, or anyone who isn't a Cubs fan or employee care about what's fair to the Cubs? Technically, what the Cubs are doing is against the CBA. It's just never been enforced because violations are essentially impossible to prove.
  20. I shaved my head two weeks ago. I can see why they'd want to follow the cool crowd.
  21. A lot of my belief in his value is based on readiness to contribute to an MLB team ASAP. If he can't even make it through the first round of cuts, then they don't seem to think he's all that close.
