I'm definitely still a little worried about Bryant's contact rate. I don't think he's going to be a high-OBP guy early in his career. -

They are both terrible hitters, but Szczur is a better defender and base runner so you can at least conceivably use him in those roles productively.

Kinda the same thought, but I see it as Castillo, 5th outfielder, Bryant. -
Shiny New Toy Syndrome. Looking back at the last few of these, the most recent year's non-first draftees are always overrated.

There are still 39 players in camp, 34 of which are on the 40-man and 5 NRIs (Coke, Teagarden, Bryant, Herrera, Russell). Locks: OF (3) Soler, Fowler, Coghlan IF (4) Rizzo, Castro, Alcantara, La Stella C (2) Montero, Ross SP (5) Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Wood RP (5) Rondon, Ramirez, Strop, Motte, Grimm That's 19 spots. Theoretically, 6 are up for grabs. Denorfia has a spot if he's healthy, but he might be on the DL for Opening Day. Next in line in the OF should be Sweeney, but I've seen some argument for Szczur. Lake seems to be toast. You could probably call Baez and Olt locks for two more jobs in the infield right now, but they're still insisting Baez isn't locked in. We're almost certainly going with a 7-man pen, and Coke seems to be the first choice at lefty. The last spot could conceivably go to Jackson, Britton, Rosscup or Ortiz. That leaves the 25th spot, which would seem to be a choice between Castillo and a 5th outfielder. I'm pretty sure they'll trade Castillo for whatever rather than pay his salary and reduce roster flexibility just to hold out another few weeks on trading him, but it's still possible.

I'm just not sure being the 6th-best hitter in one of three A+ leagues puts Vogelbach on a track to be a good enough hitter in the majors to be valuable with his skill set.

I love the idea of Rizzo 2nd and Soler 4th.

It's possible. But he's still striking out 30% of the time, so all the holes are still there waiting to be exploited by MLB pitchers who want to exploit them in the regular season. Even if he's no better at all, there's a thin bit of value to be had out of him as the short end of a 3b platoon, PH and 1b backup. I'm willing to give him a shot because I'm just that much of a Coghlan hater, and I like the defensive possibilities of Bryant in LF and Olt in 3b vs. Coghlan in LF and Bryant at 3b. That's swinging two positions from bad to good, defensively.

Unless something came out today, last I heard they were still not sure if he was going to Iowa or Tennessee.

My dark horse: Coghlan. So terrible in LF and the bat has popped up for a year before only to be terrible for the next four.,

if that actually happens to any real worthwhile extent, i'm not sure i've seen a better lineup (taking league factors into account) like i can't even process that...because right now i'm fairly confident in a certain level of competence at every position except 2B. 1990s Indians. The OBP was just disgusting, and still tons of power.

So that leaves us with Coke and Britton as loogy options? I can't say I'm thrilled about that. Probably. *Maybe* replace Britton with Ortiz or Rosscup. Left-handed relief was probably the most obvious unfilled hole of the offseason.

I'm a little disappointed. I thought there was more there with him than any of the other scrapheap lefties, a few of which we will be employing.

Bullpen picture gets a little clearer, and that saves us a bit of money I think. Wasn't he on one of those not-completely-guaranteed arbitration-type deals?
