  1. Our BABIP mojo is already better tonight, I can feel it.
  2. says who? is this some rule? Says some people's interpretation of labor law. I'm not an expert in the field, but when the idea that there could be an arbitration hearing for lack of good faith is put forward, and all the sides are acting like it's a plausible outcome, I'll assume it's a plausible outcome.
  3. The entire point is kind of that there's not supposed to be a magic day. You're supposed to be doing this for baseball reasons, like Theo said he is.
  4. So I guess the logical conclusion is that they think it's higher than 0.001%. It's not nearly as clear-cut as some fans want to believe. That is only the logical conclusion if the Cubs actually do wait beyond the point where they no longer technically "have to" wait. Maybe. I think the fact that they are covering their tracks with their public statements says it pretty well, but I guess if you thought that was purely for PR or something.
  5. They could award him the missing service time, effectively making him a free-agent a year earlier.
  6. So I guess the logical conclusion is that they think it's higher than 0.001%. It's not nearly as clear-cut as some fans want to believe.
  7. Labor law is a bit more complicated than just the literal interpretation of the CBA. IANAlaborlawyer, but there appear to be all kinds of grey areas about employers treating employees with good faith and reasonableness and other vaguely defined terms like that. And the teams are certainly acting like that's a factor. When there are dozens of millions of dollars on the line, how sure do you need to be that the one arbitrator involved would see it the same way you do. 95%? 98%? 99.999%? All it takes is one kooky opinion in the right hands. That's what got Ryan Braun off when MLB was completely sure they had him dead to rights.
  8. And they would lose. The precedent is long established. No one will even care. He will be up with the major league team, which is exactly what everyone wants. Problem solved. There is no precedent because it has never been challenged, and teams are careful to maintain plausible deniability. I think the owners would be overwhelming favorites in such a grievance, but I don't think they can take it for 100% granted. All it takes is one arbitrator to see it differently.
  9. Yes, but technically the regular season is extended by a day for that game. But service-time is only awarded for "regularly scheduled" days, and Jesse Rogers can't be bothered to be right before he publishes.
  10. Unless they changed the rule this off-season and didn't tell anybody, he's wrong. Tons of examples from history that show it didn't work that way those years.
  11. A personal catcher combined with a 13-man pitching staff.
  12. *shrug* Wasn't meant to be, battled, not too upset.
  13. OK, I can't hate him if we're going to have fun putting him in weird spots.
  14. Kinda wish we had a righty on the bench to PH with here.
  15. *You* were the one who brought up what the offense "looks like" in this sample. Not me.
  16. Even if they lose this game, it's fun that they were in it.
  17. Exactly. I'm certainly not suggesting that only the negative of this short season is representative either. However, I see a pretty similar offense as to what we saw last year. While it's only 7 games, it doesn't seem to have changed much, and I guess I feel as though I'm not excited as everyone else seems to be. Cubs in 2014: No. 21 at taking pitches outside the zone Cubs in 2015: No. 1 at taking pitches outside the zone Seems a little different to me.
  18. If we take above .500 to mean good and below .500 to mean bad, then most of the major projection systems would have said yes to that before the season started. This isn't some new thing.
  19. You misunderstood what they were saying. The "unreal" was referring to the fact that we've, on average, hit balls harder than the Reds all night, but have had trouble finding grass while they had one magic inning where everything got through in a cluster.
  20. I'm not stunned. It's baseball. Weird things happen. Baseball Prospectus had them at a 50.6% chance to make the playoffs going into today. Does that make you feel confident?
  21. I'm honestly not sure what you *are* suggesting. Some weird notion about having no confidence as a default and the team can only convince you to change that default setting by doing things that can't be discounted with glib dismissals.
  22. They won baseball games. So all it takes is facing Latroy and an idiot Reds manager to give you confidence in this team? Good to know. They also won 50% of the games that did not fit that description. "Confidence" in the team is meaningless. It's a stupid, meatball term. I think they're a decent baseball team in a league with very few great baseball teams to worry about. It's a high-variance sport and they could have an awesome record or a terrible one in five months, but I see no reason to like them less than anyone outside of Washington or LA likes their team.
