  1. oh that's the other thing...having to endure all the meatballs when good pitchers get smacked around I'd rather listen to that than breathless horseraces for roster spots based on spring training slash lines.
  2. I'm close enough to pop over for a day trip. I've never been to spring training before and I'd like to be able to say I've done it at least once. JFC when did spring training tickets get so expensive?
  3. I still get him mixed up with the other guy we also got in the supplemental first round in 2012.
  4. Having 6 good MLBers for 4 spots is not depth. Having 3 good MLBers for 4 spots, one crappy one, two mediocre bench guys and two prospects in the minors? That is depth. Or something.
  5. I'm not defending Hendry, but there's a humongous difference between those 2 moves. At least the Cubs signed a bunch that off season. Bought themselves into being the favorites. Plus, Sori was a hell of a lot better player than Hosmer. I don't disagree... But few thought it was a good contract at the time, and in hindsight, I don't think anyone would have done it again (we got what, maybe 2 WAR from the last four or five years we had him?). At the time, I would have preferred opening up the pocketbook a year or two earlier and nabbing Vlad or Beltran over Soriano. All that said, I would sign Soriano again in a heartbeat over that contract they gave Hosmer. According to Fangraphs, we got 8.9 fWAR from his last 3.5 years before before trading him to the Yankees. The Soriano contract was fine, both at the time and how it turned out.
  6. They immediately won the division the next two years. How was it the wrong year?
  7. I hope it becomes like the Lester thing and teams keep running themselves into outs in key situations.
  8. What's the difference functionally between Hendricks' awesome changeup and a curve.
  9. how is this even a thought a person has? and why does it seem like 95% of baseball fans online think that there's something inherently better about players who were drafted/signed IFA and developed compared to guys acquired via trade or free agency these people are literally like "yeah, they're really good and all but they can't develop pitching so yeah and stuff" We had the oldest pitching staff in the national league last year by BR's reckoning, and we just added a 31-year-old pitcher with a history of arm problems to a 6-year contract. Our minor league pitchers are nothing special. It's not something that keeps me lying awake at night, but if an opposing fan needs something to feel better about when the Cubs are 10 games ahead of them in the projections right now, it's a pretty reasonable place to look.
  10. I don't even think about it anymore. I just reflexively write him into the lineup when imagining 2019 and beyond. It just feels assumed.
  11. What's the law on something like this?
  12. We have to go through four months of thinking it could come any day first.
  13. Now we're gonna have to pay the Red Sox more compensation.
  14. Which reminds me, I really thought Micah Bowie would be useful. Didn't Ruben quevedo come from them Same deal, in which we shipped out Terry Mulholland and Jose Hernandez. I was thinking Sergio Mitre came in that deal too but apparently he was homegrown. Before looking it up, I had no idea we got a third player, a PTBNL, named "Joey Nation" who apparently briefly appeared in the majors. He doesn't sound real.
  15. I thought looking up scouting reports, stats, and prospect rankings would make this more clear but now I'm even more puzzled. WTF were they doing? He was a pitcher from Atlanta. He had to be good. Which reminds me, I really thought Micah Bowie would be useful.
  16. I was a huge sucker for Juan Cruz. He was going to be our Pedro Martinez
  17. Who was the other prospect we were trying to get from the Yankees that one summer they almost traded Sosa? Soriano and someone else
  18. they did get a shortstop you weirdo that's only the single best and most memorable thing about 2004 Eventually.
  19. Now I’m looking at the 2004 team and wondering why they didn’t just get a SS and a real closer, because the current Cubs have taught me that you should just have zero holes on the roster.
  20. I’m on my phone so I can’t get into the whole spiel, but that era of the Cubs farm system was above average at producing prospects who would turn into major leaguers. As you mentioned, Ed Lynch squandered a good chunk of them. Jim Hendry was a mediocre GM who got left behind when the game smartened up and looks like dog poop next to Epstein. Lynch was actually legit awful.
  21. 2004 was better when healthy
  22. I just realized this is the 20th anniversary season of the Sammy Sosa/Kerry Wood/Wild Card season. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/1998-schedule-scores.shtml This will always be my favorite non-WS winning Cubs team. I was just a little too young to appreciate 1989, so seeing them do the clubhouse celebration when they made the playoffs felt so epic. Those early steroid numbers look so crazy now. Brant freaking Brown put up a .501 SLG in 124 games, or roughly the same as Anthony Rizzo last year. Kevin Tapani almost put up 20 wins and almost put up an ERA over 5 in the same season.
  23. They are currently 8th worst by point percentage. A top-5 pick isn't completely out of reach. I guess their goal differential is "only" -3 so they've been a little unlucky, and we always knew this day would come, but it's definitely still a weird feeling.
  24. I used one one of my top-secret alts to like it twice.
  25. How on earth does this get 17 likes. People are just tossing them out like they have no meaning anymore... Dislike
