  1. Not this year, but in the long run I fear the Reds more than any other team in this division. The Brewers have some young talent, but are poorly built and will always have pitching and defense problems. The Reds are building a formidable team.
  2. Fly out to deep left, the Cardinals broadcast starts running the little "three-run homer " bracket. Guess WGN isn't the only one who can't get that stuff right...
  3. Back-to-back singles to start the second. The sham starter the Cardinals dug up has nothing, nothing at all.
  4. And now it's 4-0. Nothing is ever over, but it sure is nice to see them losing.
  5. Two-run double. 2-0 Pirates, still runners at 2nd and 3rd, one out.
  6. Or, as I like to call it, the routing against the Cardinals thread. Pirates have the bases loaded, 1 out in the top of the first.
  7. We keep preaching that there's no such thing as proven commodities and AAAA players, that if you can hit in the minors you can hit in the majors. It sucks that the Cardinals figured it out before we did.
  8. I thought Cubs fans were crazy when they kept talking about a sweep. No team is ever favored to four-game sweep another. But a few breaks have gone our way, we've won the one-run games, and here we are. How's this for a stat? The Cubs haven't lost a game by more than two runs since May 7.
  9. Edmonds released, Pie called up to strict platoon with Reed Johnson. The batting order looks like this: Theriot Fukudome Lee Ramirez Soto Soriano Pie/Johnson DeRosa Mixing in Cedeno liberally, but otherwise changing little day to day. Unfortunately, Hill isn't showing much in the minors and I'm forced to admit his problems are now legit. The rotation would now be: Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Marshall, Gallagher. Move Marquis to long relief. Flog his arm as much as I feel like in any game that's out of control. In the pen, I use Marmol only when the game is tied or the tying run is on base or at the plate, and in the eighth inning or later (I might push that down to the seventh if it's a really high-leverage situation and their best hitters are up). Wood can stay the closer, but if Marmol is dealing and the lead is one run, he can stay in the game and finish. All-in-all, not that many changes.
  10. The second strike to Tavarez was my favorite. It didn't even move that much, it was just the perfect late breaking wrinkle that froze him completely on a pitch that ended up dead down the middle.
  11. Nice hustle from Soriano and Theriot to prevent the DP.
  12. The downside is, after yesterday, I don't feel safe with any lead.
  13. Dempster's sac bunting has been amazing this season.
  14. No. 324 in why errors are a bad stat and should be eliminated.
  15. The Rockies' strategy of just not swinging at anything finally fails to pay off. Big pitch.
  16. Gamecast showed that as nearly down the middle. Then gamecast is wrong. It was right, right, right off the corner. The edge of the ball might have clipped it, and you see just off the corner called a lot.
  17. He's wild, but he's not super-hittable at this point, HR notwithstanding. Yeah, but when he does get hit it will hurt cause he will have guys on through his walks. Agreed. This has the potential to be a really ugly outing. But it's salvageable too.
  18. He's wild, but he's not super-hittable at this point, HR notwithstanding.
  19. That hit his hand in a swinging motion. He shouldn't be getting first.
  20. Eh, they had a homer by Omar Quintalinia. They can't bitch too much about the wind. I'm not complaining. It's pretty clear they are intentionally trying to go to right today against Rusch.
  21. The Cubs are playing the wind something fierce the last two days. Home-field advantage.
