I'm not writing the Brewers off for future seasons, but I'm not fearing them either. They have some great young hitters. Congratulations, that gets you to "not suckiness." They have a few live young arms, but so do 29 other organizations. They have major defensive problems, they have no bullpen, and I don't see either of those being rectified anytime soon. Their future playoff success is a couple starters, a couple relievers and perhaps a position player away. They could do it, but that doesn't make them anything to fear in my book.

Interestingly, my application was declined a few weeks ago. Probably for the best.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Record a voice saying "a breaking ball low and away should get him here." Attach that to a button marked 'A' Record a voice saying "the runners will be going here." Attach that to a button marked 'B' Record a voice saying "the runners probably won't be going here." Attach that to a button marked 'C' Train a monkey or small bird to press 'A' every time the count reaches two strikes, and randomly alternate beteween B and C whenever there are runners on base, and boom, you've got a replacement for Steve Stone.

From a broadcasting standpoint, I agree 100%. As a fan though, you have to appreciate his genuine enthusiasm and love for the Cubs. His enthusiasm for the game in big moments? Sure. But for the 10 times a year we get to hear him yell "YES!", there's 10 times a game where his stupid, rambling, incoherent stories cause Pat to ignore three plate appearances.

Santo is awful on the radio, too.

How many teams in the NL are definitively better than the Cardinals, anyway, even if we believe their performance to date is a fluke? There's a lot of bad teams in the NL, and a few good ones made bad by injuries.

You guys seem to be remembering the legend of Maddux more than the actuality. When things are going bad, Maddux gets visibly angry, and he's been known to bark at a few umpires in his day.

I never said he shouldn't stick around, I said I hate seeing guys hang around too long. I never felt that way until Jordan came back after his second retirement. He went out on top after hitting the winning short for the 6th and last title. I can't think of another superstar who has ever had such a picturesque ending. It was the most beautiful way someone who transcended the game like Jordan did could wrap up his career. It was the only appropriate ending to such a stellar career. It was disappointing when he came back with another team and was unable to even come close to recapturing that. That doesn't mean that I didn't think he should come back, just that I hated seeing him come back unable to recapture the glory we expected from him. Fans have every right to hate seeing their heros sucking when they get old. Who here enjoyed watching Sandberg put up an OPS+ of 83 while failing to get to so many balls in the field that he used to make easily? That's also not to say I would have hated not getting another year of Ryno at the same time. Hating seeing someone hang around too long isn't the same as criticizing the player for playing as long as he's able. Let's not confuse the two. It seems to me that it comes from a fan's belief that they somehow own the player's legacy, that the player owes them something. I hate that attitude. If Jordan wanted to come back today to be the 12th man on the Bobcats, that'd be fine with me.

I remember when we were in their position last year. I remember telling everyone to look at the statistical projections that said we'd catch up. Now the statistical projections say we run away with it.

I hate swinging over pitches that are very low or in the dirt early in the count. Unless you are Soriano, what are you going to do with it even if it's just low in the zone?

yes, one of the two games i've ever attended at wrigley. and the cubs were horrendous that year (2002) That's probably why I don't remember it than. Amazingly, I do. The big hit was a blooper down the line, iirc. No idea why I remember that.

I wonder what Maddux's BABIP would have been here for a whole career. Not .144, but still .294. Nobody is completely immune to the BABIP mojo except for knuckleballers.
