  1. Agreed. Hendry should never have signed him to the contract he did, and he's definitely the first guy bumped from the rotation. I just don't get the Estes-level hate for someone who isn't close to Estes-level bad.
  2. He is now. He wasn't 24 hours ago. Over his last 100 innings he is, over his last 300 he's not, over his last 500 he is, over his last 750 he's not. Seems to me like he's an average pitcher oscillating around the average.
  3. WHIP is such a bad stat. It's the batting-average of pitchers. His FIP going into today was 4.50, almost dead even with his ERA. No BABIP luck or anything like that in there. Is it really? I'm sway-able on this. 1.5 just seems exceedingly high to have such an average ERA. His ground-ball rate is pretty decent, which helps.
  4. What stat would you like to use that shows him as a horrible starting pitcher worthy of the hate he gets? We could use his team expected win-loss from last season, which was 16.1-16.9. Or his peripheral ERA of 4.33 (don't have the numbers for this season, otherwise I would use them, apologies). He's not a horrible starting pitcher, and I defy anyone to post some real, statistical evidence that says he is. i posted in the game thread that his peripherals are all ugly this year, and he's likely to get worse. his K-rate is down, his LD% against is up, and he's given up home runs on 50% fewer fly balls than normal this season. yikes. His peripheral ERA, according to fangraphs, was 4.50 going into today, just .07 above his actual ERA.

  7. Fair point and withdrawn. But none of the potential reasons are based in the value of his performance as a baseball pitcher. Unless one hates average starting pitchers, which I guess is possible.
  8. Marquis ERA+ 2005 102 2006 74 2007 101 2008 101 (not including todays game, which will surely push that below 100) I'd call that at or below league average. Calling that "consistently better than league average" is pretty misleading. First, as has been mentioned, relievers consistently post better ERAs than starters. The league average for a starter is around 95. Second, nice arbitrary endpoint that leaves out his best season. He's about 50/50 right now to make this season his fourth in the last five seasons of above-average starterness. The mindless Marquis hate is just that, mindless. He's our worst starting pitcher, give or take a Gallagher, but that doesn't mean he's horrible.
  9. I hate starting pitchers who consistently post ERA+ better than league average. Boot them all, the jerks.
  10. http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:HW3x_ionrVNq5M:http://realestatevideo.wellcomemat.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/sham.jpg
  11. The Cubs are one win away from being .800 at home through half the home schedule. That's filthy sick disgusting.
  12. The Cubs don't need another reliever. The pen is fine. Everyone needs another reliever. Always. Same goes with starters.
  13. Woody gives up a long ball here you won't feel the same way. The odds of an average major-leaguer hitting a HR in any given PA is like 2%. Why manage around that possibility?
  14. *sigh* The tying run on deck with two outs is not a closer-needing situation. The odds of the batter on deck with two outs coming up and eventually scoring are almost nil. This is a case of emotions over reality. Emotionally, it seems scary that you've gone from 11-4 to tying run on deck. Reality is there's little chance. Piniella is always overmanaging to try to stamp out small chances to lose.
  15. They adjusted to him by psyching him out into throwing really wildly?
  16. I honestly can't believe we are about to be 31-8 at Wrigley. A win tomorrow and we are playing .800 ball at home through half the home schedule. If this were a video game, I'd turn up the sliders.
  17. I'm not sure more time off is the answer for control problems. If his arm is shredded, the damage is done at this point. Light but regular use until he figures it out would seem about right.
  18. I'm really glad Lou let him try to pitch out of it, actually.
  19. Thanks Lou. I hope those 6-run leads in May were worth it.
  20. He is our 3 for the next few weeks. If that doesn't scare the hell out of you then you have some kinda faith in our offense. If he's our third-best starter, that's not his fault. He's a starter who consistently puts up ERA+s over 100. That's adequate at worst.
  21. Marquis came into today with an ERA+ of 105, which is pretty consistent with his last few seasons. What more do people want from him? To be good enough that we don't have to worry about a 6 run lead when he is on the mound. Oh and maybe to hit his spots just once in a while. Marquis can't be responsible for your emotions. His results say he's an adequate starter.
  22. Marquis came into today with an ERA+ of 105, which is pretty consistent with his last few seasons. What more do people want from him? To take the rest of the day off.... Even if he is a bad pitcher, bad pitchers are made for five-run leads.
  23. Marquis came into today with an ERA+ of 105, which is pretty consistent with his last few seasons. What more do people want from him?
  24. That was the fugliest beautiful DP I've ever seen.
