  1. I'm not going to get bogged down in what qualifies as "mediocre," but if you list all the pitchers employed in the majors as starters the last few years, he's in the top half. Marshall is the only one of those four who projects to be around Marquis' equal in 2009, and even then only if you don't take durability into account.
  2. I doubt you'll find many people who argued both sides. It's just that one side was more vocal then, and the correct side was more vocal after the trade. I've been in favor of keeping Marquis for a while. Before last season I was saying we shouldn't dump him for peanuts. Yeah, he is awesome. At worst, he's an average major league starter. Maybe a little better.

  4. I don't think many of us are giving credit to Piniella for much of anything. He's not awful, but showing up and having a good team is his primary accomplishment.
  5. Wow, I hadn't looked at the standings in awhile. If you exclude Anaheim, who is five games back of the Blackhawks but with five more games played, the Blackhawks have nobody relevant within nine points of them either way.
  6. Oilers just stand there and look at every loose puck.
  7. Hawks putting on excellent pressure to start the third.
  8. If they hold on to him, I still say they are the best team in the NL. They don't have the starting pitching Billingnsley-Ace potential but young Kershaw- Unproven at ML level, wasn't great last year in his time Kuroda- solid 2/3, 2nd year in the majors will teams get a book on him or will he remain effective? ? ? Being "unproven" doesn't sway me much. Those three are all quality pitchers. Those three plus the remains of the bullpen make up for a pretty good pitching staff in my book, plus they have Dodger stadium to cover up for their worse pitchers. Meanwhile, their offense is full of guys in their low 20s with good breakout/improvement potential.
  9. Just got in, will be able to watch the third period.
  10. The fundamental difference is that there are tons of guys capable of being commissioner of baseball, and only a handful capable of being major-league players.
  11. All of it is speculation. How does anyone know that Lou is now making the decisions for Hendry? It's less painful that admitting your GM may not be good.
  12. Not compared to CEOs of company's of comparable size and success. Fair point.
  13. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/pitch-sequence-high-fastball-then-curveball/
  14. ok then, take your pick- Hendry: -has really mismanaged his prospects and how to get the best value for them over the last few yrs -has put together an absolutely piss-poor farm system, which with the resources he's had at hand, is downright indefensible at least one of the two statements is correct 3) Had a lot of really good prospects and got unlucky that few panned out. Not my opinion of the situation, but a defensible possibility.
  15. For 2007, $17,470,491. Latest available number. That's disgusting.
  16. If he doesn't do what he believes is in his best interest, he's not being a good-faith actor in the free market. Only a communist wouldn't hate on a guy for doing something that patriotic.
  17. If this is true, it's the most damning thing possible for Hendry. What's the point of having him if he abdicates his job?
  18. Okay, I definitely overrated the Cardinals' depth now that I look at it. Point remains, their worst case scenario is pretty simple: Pujols' elbow gives out.
  19. I didn't say it was a 1-for-1 move. I'm saying in the aggregate, the team is older because of the two.
  20. The Cardinals' is easy. Pujols' elbow gives out. Otherwise, they have a ton of depth, especially position players. They might be better off if a few guys get hurt and give some prospects a chance. If Wainwright gets hurt(he had arm troubles in the minors and missed 10 starts last year with a finger problem), their rotation is Carpenter(< 25 IP the last 2 years combined), Lohse, Wellemeyer, Piniero, and I don't know, Brad Thompson? They have Wallace and his 200 professional at bats I guess, and Skip Schumaker is a decent 4th OF I guess, but they aren't going to be better off with injuries or even closer to that. Is Braden Looper not still a starter for them (Honest question?) ZIPS seems to think they have a bunch of guys who could fill in with adequate numbers: Jaime Garcia, Jesse Todd, PJ Walters are all names it lists.
  21. How about Heilman in the pen with Samardzija in AAA, and Gaithright for Pie?
