  1. Seriously? Seriously? I hope to GOD he takes them up on the offer, and I hope to GOD they get stuck with the 2008 Red Sox Manny who does what he wants, when he wants if he wants to. They could easily spend that money better. Get Dunn, Sheets, and Wolf for probably the $25M they offered to Manny. That's not better. Or even close. Dunn isn't better than Manny, Sheets may not be able to pitch next year and they might have five starters better than Wolf right not.
  2. Whatever. I didn't say the Cardinals would win the division in that scenario. They are an inferior team to the Cubs, but there's very little outside of a Pujols injury that could really hurt them. Not injury-prone. Injury-risky. Remember Jon Lieber, and how everyone said he was a horse and all those innings were no big deal?
  3. The Cardinals' is easy. Pujols' elbow gives out. Otherwise, they have a ton of depth, especially position players. They might be better off if a few guys get hurt and give some prospects a chance.
  4. Yeah it's not gonna excite the fanbase right now, but these younger, cheaper players, do well people will be happy. Hendry is counting on some young players coming through in full-time roles. So that scares people a bit, but the Cubs believe they can fill those roles. They feel Fontenot will come close to DeRosa production if not better. They feel Hoffpauir can give them a good power bat off the bench. They think Aaron Miles will be a better bat off the bench then Cedeno. They think Gaudin/Marshall/Heilman can replace Marquis and still be insurance for Harden just fine. They also feel, Bradley will have better health. I can understand some people being worried about counting on these younger guys, and Bradleys health. But lets see what happens, if most of those things work out the team could easily be better in 09. I'm not really sure you can say the Cubs got younger and cheaper. They got older and more expensive.
  5. 1) Hilarious 2) You are the quarterback of the Patriots, dude. You can pull better than that. I'm gonna guess he was married before week 2 of the season. He's had like five months to rectify the situation.
  6. If anyone on NSBB were QB of the Patriots, yes.
  7. If they hold on to him, I still say they are the best team in the NL.

  9. CT was absolutely hilarious after Pujols said he wanted Manny on the Cards. Dozens and dozens and dozens of "SINE MANNY NOW! ! ! HERES HOW!" posts. There are a large number of internet-savvy Cardinals fans who've banned themselves from that painfully obnoxious forum. Always good for a laugh, though. One interesting point that sounded so different, to me, in this thread versus Cardinals fans at home, is what someone mentioned earlier about winning vs. beating the I-55 rival. In St Louis, I'd say most Cards fans would tell you that Cubs fans care more about beating the Cards than they do about winning overall. And I've heard several of my Cubs buddies say the same about Cards fans. Funny. A lot depends on which Cubs fans you are talking about. Downstate Illinois Cubs fans are much more intensely into the rivalry than Chicago Cubs fans, just like as a downstate fan I never really thought much about the White Sox until I went to school with a lot of Chicago-based Cubs fans.
  10. .800-.850 is just way too bullish on DeRosa for my tastes. PECOTA projection: 354/414 Marcels projection: 350/445 ZIPS projection: 362/440 .802 is the highest projection. .850 is a bit much to expect, though certainly possible.
  11. Completely agreed. Dumping DeRosa was a bad, bad idea. We really only need to Fontenot to be healthy. The right-handed half of an adequate middle infield platoon should never, ever be a problem.
  12. The fact that he's been improving the last couple of years makes me think there's even more room to fall. So the fact that he's been successful means he's more likely to collapse? I don't follow you. Plexiglass principle. Having several seasons of increasing production in your 30s is a good sign that you are due for some regression to the mean. And I never said "collapse." That's a completely different issue. How so? My argument is that the second base position has been downgraded from last year. Even in the off chance that the starters are similar, the depth is certainly worse. That's a very legit and relevant argument. The original discussion was about the starting lineup. If you want to have the depth discussion, I agree with you completely.

  14. And that's where we'll just have to disagree. I see them as projecting virtually identically. I just think you have to assume too much about Fontenot continuing the same success as last year over twice the ABs. He may do it, but it's an assumption. I'm a big believer in platoon situations, and I'm very bearish on 34-year-old middle infielders.
  15. No but he allegedly lied to congress and his case is under review by a federal grand jury. If he lies to them too will he be prosecuted? I hope so, and believe so, especially if the lie becomes public knowledge.
  16. And that's where we'll just have to disagree. I see them as projecting virtually identically.
  17. That was one of those awful "We're going to call it wrong just because we know it can be overturned" calls.
  18. Did Roger Clemens lie in front of a federal grand jury?
  19. I really love this team's defensive responsibility since the ASB. This is how they need to play in the playoffs.
  20. Has Lou ever stuck to a very strict platoon (or even a strict platoon at all)? I really don't remember. And it's a sign of a bad move when you make one and end up hoping that - at best - you can match your production from last year. It's kind of inevitable for a team with 97-wins, a lot of top-notch seasons and a ton of backloaded contracts.
  21. I'll takes Miles' career .352 OBP against lefties for his half of the platoon. If we stick to a *very* strict platoon, then it should be pretty close.
  22. Is this man ever wrong? ;) :) I'm just saying that's pretty good, I didn't realize he was having that good of a season.
  23. I don't buy that Fontenot is that much better than DeRosa and Fuku is that much better than Edmonds defensively. I'm hoping Fuku can make some big strides this year (and generally like him), but I don't see any way we match the overall production at second that we had last year (or likely would have had this year had we been smart and kept DeRo). I don't buy that a Fontenot/Miles platoon is that much worse than DeRosa offensively, and *I* am worth half a win in CF over Edmonds.
  24. Anything we lose at 2b and CF in the lineup, we make up a fair bit on defense. Not sure about RF.
