  1. They have a very broken Rich Harden when everyone's healthy. When they aren't, it gets worse. There's a ton of room for improvement there.
  2. Unless you have five starters better than him, it's not really a redundant position. Not redundant, but limiting returns. I don't quite get that. The return is in the runs over his replacement, not in the overall team offense or defense. Until you start getting into the extremes of the marginal values of runs in high- or low-scoring environments, that is. If you have the best pitching in the league with Shawn Estes as your fifth starter, and a mediocre offense of eight guys just below average, you are still getting more value by replacing Estes than improving the batting.

  4. Quantity never means as much as quality in these deals.
  5. This. Baseball strategy really isn't that complicated, and most of the decisions don't matter in the end anyway.
  6. Maddux's knowledge angle is overrated. When you can take a 91 MPH fastball and cut it several inches of late break with pinpoint placement, you don't have to be a genius to get hitters out.
  7. You don't need a bidding war to beat $3 million per year for a second-pairing defenseman, let alone one with youth and potential.
  8. I'm going by what the beat writers are suggesting: Interestingly, his cap hit was $2.4 million last year because of bonuses he didn't reach. The minimum qualifying offer was about $1.1 million, but there was no way he was taking that. The going rate for young defensemen as good as he is is a lot more than that.
  9. Barker is way, way more valuable than Versteeg in my book. You have a potential top-pair defenseman vs. a decent winger who came out of nowhere to have a good season last year.
  10. Pretty much all the fans at hfboards.com, which is where I go to read what knowledgeable hockey fans think, were drooling over him and hoping for a much bigger deal.
  11. We know how they handled it, the NHLPA filed a grievance. An arbitrator will decide. The fact that they paid Barker more than he should have gotten if he was still really just a RFA leads me to believe the Blackhawks think Versteeg has a great case and will likely become an UFA. As an UFA, I don't think the Blackhawks would be due any compensation if Versteeg signed elsewhere. That would be a huge loss. I'm pretty sure Barker would have gotten that much, at minimum, as an RFA.
  12. If they throw enough prospects at 30+ players, they'll be us.
  13. Very, very glad we resigned Barker.
  14. What I'm reading is about 50/50 that it will either turn out to be nothing or something. but the Blackhawks' version of events is awfully weird.
  15. Will apparently Tallon claims they did, but they didn't take into consideration "Canada Day." Which makes no sense, because the deadline this year was June 29.
  16. It's not about "punishment." By the rules, you either file a valid qualifying offer or they become UFAs.
  17. Chip calls it a "Waveland wallop." I always defended him, but I'm beginning to question that.
  18. Complain some more. That will totally help you get the next call...
  19. That didn't go near as far as Chip thought it would. I thought it would go farther, too, but I'm not yelling "how far is that gonna go" on national TV.
  20. Just remember: No matter how hot a woman is, someone out there is tired of doing her.
  21. You'd need to train the pitcher to play cut-off man to get the throw to first.
