A few more questions: Len, do you anticipate the Cubs making any more moves between now and the start of spring training? How much contact do you keep with the Cubs and front office personell during the off-season? Do you get any "inside" scoops or do you find out about trades and signings through the Interent and print media like the rest of us peons? What's your favorite restaurant in the Chicago area? Have you ever eated boiled crawfish? (mmmm crawfish) If so, did you suck the heads? Who's the better golfer between you and Bob? On Opening Day, I think it would be cool if you, Bob, Pat Hughes and Ron Santo challenged Marty Brennamen and the rest of the Reds crew to caged tag-team wrestling match. What do you think? Who would win? Finaly, what is your prediction of the Cubs record and finish within the division for this season? -
I think it had a huge effect in the minds of many voters.

You don't think he should share the podium with Ripken and Gwynn because of allegations? He probably took steroids however I don't think voters should exclude people based on allegations. And hence my statement: Yes, based on the "allegations" and all the garbage that will go with them, I'd hate for those questions and discussions to take away from the honor that Ripken and Gwynn (two wonderful ambassadors of the game) richly deserve. I guess I consider McGwire less deserving than those two. But as you have said, I too would have a hard time not voting a deserving candidate just on what I "believe" to be true instead of what I know...therefore my statement that I would "reluctantly" cast that vote. Of course, I can see a lot of voters not voting him on the first ballot because they view a first ballot HOFer to be a greater honor than getting in on a later ballot. I would not begrudge a voter who wanted to make McGwire wait until 2008 or 2009 for induction. I would begrudge those who refuse to ever induct him.

I think he'll still go in, but I have serious doubts as to whether he'll go in on the first ballot. Ripken and Gwynn are no-brainers. I can also see many voters thinking McGwire does not deserve to share the podium with those two because of the steroid allegations. In many ways, I agree with that assessment. If I were a voter, I'd probably reluctantly vote for him. I'd strongly consider withholding a vote for a year or two in order to make a point and to keep him from sharing the podium with Ripken and Gwynn, but after moments of waffling, I'd probably end up casting a vote for him.

None of the holdovers will get in next year. If the voters withold a vote on McGwire, then we'll see only Ripken and Gwynn inducted. I might have to book another trip to Cooperstown in 2007, because of players that aren't Cubs, those are two of my favorites.

He should be a Cub, but I'm fairly certain he'll go in as a Cardinal.

I know that the Cubs single game tickets go on sale Friday, February 24, but does anyone know if that's also when the dugout and bullpen seats go on sale? Last year, those seats went on sale later to people selected through the email drawing. Will that be the case this year or will those seats go on sale at the same time as the other seats?

A case could be made for Sutter going in as a Cardinal or a Cub, but I think as a Cub would be most fitting. Sutter played in MLB for 12 seasons. 5 as a Cub; 4 as a Cardinal. He was an All-Star four of the five seasons as a Cub, compared to only twice as a Cardinal. He won the Cy Young award as a Cub, though he did finish in the top five three of his four years with the Cardinals. He won a WS with the Cardinals which might factor into the decision as well. He led the NL in saves twice as a Cub; three times as a Cardinal. Judging him on ERA and WHIP, he seemed to have better seasons as a Cub than he did as a Cardinal. I'm sure it could go either way, and this one might be one where the HOF consults the player for his opinion. I'd go Cub, but it's hard to argue if the HOF chooses Cardinal.

Rice was a better hitter than Dawson. Dawson was better on defense. I can't see how anyone would vote for Dawson, yet pass on Rice.

I think it's a shame that Albert Belle only got 7% of the vote. He may not be a HOFer, but he's more of a HOFer than many people ahead of him on that list. Dawson saw his total rise to 61%. I still think it's a long shot that he'll ever get in, but he is gaining in his support each year. He has hope. I'm starting to think Blyleven and Rice may never garner the support needed for election. Congrats to Sutter, but I still think Goose was the better pitcher.

I'd offer Tampa a package of Wellemeyer, one of Dopirak or Harvey, and one of Marshall or Marmol. While that's not an overwhelming package, it could get the deal done. They could put Upton at SS, replacing Lugo. They would have a local boy (Harvey or Dopirak) who could arrive in 2007-2008 and provide some power. Welly gives them another arm for the pen and Marshall or Marmol gives them a projectible arm for the future. This deal isn't overly expensive for the Cubs either.

The HOF results will be announced today. If they vote as the NSBBers did, then the election would go as follows: Blyleven: 91% Lee Smith: 62% Dawson: 62% Trammell: 51% Gossage: 47% Belle: 46% Rice: 42% Murphy: 34% That's all I'm listing, but as you can see, if NSBB held the keys to the HOF, only Blyleven would be going in. I have a feeling no one gets in when the actual vote totals are announced, but that Sutter, Rice, and Dawson will come the closest.

That would be tough to do with Cantu manning 2B. Cantu has played some third. Maybe they could move him there and play Walker at second.

According to John Sickels' 2005 Prospect Book- Sickels gave him a grade of C in the 2005 handbook. In the BA Handbook for 2005, Spears was Baltimore's 10th ranked prospect. They suggest he profiles as a number two hitter and could steal 15-20 bases.
