  1. Spears will turn 21 in May. He played at high A last season and hit 294/349/429. He's listed as a SS. In 2004, at low A, he hit 275/358/407. Perez will be 24 in May and pitched at class A last season. I can't find much to like about him. He had a 4.28 ERA there and was old for the league. He's a 6'1'' lefty, but I don't see much to be excited about here. Spears could be a decent prospect. Perez is roster filler.
  2. The article seems to guess that the Cubs would have interest in Soriano, based upon previous interest. There's a lot of guesswork all around. As I've said earlier, I'm not sold on Soriano, but if we're going to trade Walker (which I wouldn't do), then I'd rather have Soriano than Neifi/Hairston at 2b. I'm not in favor of trading Williams to get him, however. I'd offer Patterson along with anyone from Wellemeyer, Novoa, Wuertz, or Brownlie.
  3. Yeah, it is crazy, he was born the day before me. What's carzier is the listed occupation: "unemployed." Shouldn't he have listed pro baseball player?
  4. The real HOF anounces its results tomorrow, so everyone please go vote if you haven't. Sometime tonight, I post the results of the NSBB election.
  5. You forgot Furcal. Hendry's number one target was a law breaker as well.
  6. How much is that package? And do I have to buy the whole thing if I just want to see the Cub games? This is what ticks me off. I have digital cable. I don't have FSN-Chicago, however. But my fiancee's family 30 miles to the south does have it, but none of them care about baseball. Is that justice? The EI package runs around $150. They let you spread it out over three months. Sometimes, they run an early bird special if you sign up in Februrary. And yes you have to buy the whole package. They don't break it down for different teams. That being said, I love it. When I first signed up, I did so to get Cubs games, but I often find myself watching many of the other games as well.
  7. On a general level, I have no interest in Soriano. But if all we have to offer is Patterson and a pitcher like Wellemeyer, I might do that deal. If the cost is Patterson and Williams, I'm a little more hesitant. I'd prefer Walker to Soriano, but apparently the Cubs are still intent on dealing the Bayou Basher. Since that is the case, Soriano wouldn't be a horrible replacement. I'm still worried about Soriano's road splits from 2005, though.
  8. I now what kind of website it is...so take it with a grain of salt. So let's play with the situation a bit: Drese/Watson for Patterson or Bass/Britton for Patterson? ANyone know much about any of those guys? Drese was the Rangers opening day starter in 2005.
  9. Just my gut feelings here: As long as Jim Hendry still wants to be the Cubs' GM in 2007, I'd say there is a 99% probability of him having that role in 2007. I'd say only a 90-loss type season in 2006 will cost him his job. Mind you, I don't personally think Hendry has earned another contract, but it's very unlikely that MacPhail and Fitzsimons would let him go. On the flipside, if Dusty Baker still wants to be the Cubs' field manager in 2007, I'd say he needs to guide them into the playoffs in 2006. Mr. Hoops' post is pretty much right on. Neither DePodesta nor Epstein will be the Cubs' general manager any time soon. Jim Hendry is likely safe through 2008. We're all entitled to our opinions, and certainly Hendry has had some successes and failures. The one charge I found unfair in this thread was that he somehow wrecked the farm system. Huh? Take a gander at a Cubs media guide from, say, 1995, 1996 or 1997. When you get through heaving, take a look at it now. In the interim, the Cubs have stepped up _ no, more like created _ a presence in Latin America. Having a good farm system means two things: moving players up to your own big-league team and giving the organizaton good, low-cost alternatives to expensive free agents, and using the farm system to make trades. Obviously, the Cubs have done better in the latter category _ see Bobby Hill, Hee Seop Choi and others. A few years earlier, the Cubs would not have had the minor-league talent to fetch an Aramis Ramirez or a Derrek Lee, two star players nowadays. Hendry also drafted Jon Garland, who was foolishly traded away by Ed Lynch. They all haven't worked out: Ben Christensen, Todd Noel and, at least so far, Luis Montanez. But overall, the Cubs' farm system is light years ahead of where it was a decade ago. Ah yes, the days when the Cubs brought up Andrew Lorraine and Micah Bowie from the minors to replace injured starters. Remember the debut of Telemaco though?? Such promise. Dave Swartzbaugh(sp??) Larry Casian :? I remember the moment of excitement when Amaury signed a ball for me.
  10. I don't see anyway we pay somone to take Walker. That would be foolish. He's already the best secondbaseman on the roster. It's fairly asinine to trade him as it is, but to pick up any of his contract is just ludicrous. This team isn't hurting for 2.5 million, so it's not like you should pick anything up to move him. I'm still holding out hope that the market does dry up and that Walker is starting at second on Opening Day.
  11. I hope Welly doesn't read this board. He's gonna think no one likes him. If Welly reads this board, I hope he knows I like him. But since we signed Eyre and Howry, I don't see where he fits into the club's plans. He's already behind Dempster, Eyre, Howry, Williamson, Wuertz, and Ohman for a spot in the pen. Add Novoa and Rusch to that mix and I just don't see how Welly breaks the 25-man roster this spring. He's out of options, so I'd like to get something for him rather than expose him to waivers.
  12. This is his second offense, so maybe the Reds will want him out. I'd love to give him a fresh start in Chicago. I'd do Walker (or Patterson) and Wellemeyer for Freel.
  13. That sucks for the Bengals and Palmer. So much for my long-shot bet for them to win the Super Bowl as well. :x
  14. This would be my list: 1. Delmon Young 2. Brandon Wood 3. Jeremy Hermidia 4. Andy Marte 5. Carlos Quentin 6. Ryan Zimmerman 7. Stephen Drew 8. Alex Gordon 9. Prince Fielder 10. Daric Barton
  15. Well, if the Cubs are backing away from Baltimore, it must be that the other teams are willing to offer more. I have no idea what we'll get for him. I really doubt it is much of value, but we may get someone from another team that is similar to Patterson- someone who needs a change of scenery.
  16. As long as MacPhail is running the show, an Epstein or a Depodesta is a very unlikely proposition.
  17. Here's an article in support of Dawson.
  18. Link It's mostly a background, fluff piece, but I did like this quote.
  19. Just a reminder: If you haven't voted, please do so. The links to the polls are located in this thread.
  20. Len, Thanks again for taking our questions. What is your opinion of the rapping abilities of our new centerfielder, Juan Pierre? What are some of your favorite road cities and what makes them so? Have you ever been to Louisiana?
  21. I'm married so I'm used to people who make up their minds and then change it two weeks (make that five minutes) later.
  22. Time to offer Pie + Hill + Welly + Marmol for Dunn.
