  1. I might look at Baltimore for a Williamson for Matos deal if we could get it done. If Williamson looks good for us and Hidalgo looks productive for the Orioles, they may decide that Matos is expendable. Another place I might look is Pittsburgh and explore a Williamson for Craig Wilson deal. Wilson would make a great platoon partner for Jones. Hell, Wilson would make a better everyday player than Jones. Atlanta makes the most sense, but other than prospects have nothing they can spare that the Cubs need except for prospects. Now if the Cubs can acquire prospects from the Braves that they can spin elsewhere for something of use, then it could happen.
  2. I'd consider that package, but the Phillies have no need of Walker. They'd probably want Williams. I'm not sure I'd trade Williamson, Murton, and Williams for Burrell considering Burrell's salary. And while I see Philly as a team that might be looking for a closer, they currently are paying a boatload of money to newly signed Tom Gordon to be just that. My guess is that Philly isn't in the market for a closer until Gordon has proven he can't do the job. My guess is, even if he looks bad this spring, Philly will let him have the job for a month or so before trying to pull the plug on him.
  3. I personally don't like the idea of dealing him at all until the deadline. Having a quality arm in the pen like his could prove invaluable. If he's putting up closer-like numbers, he can give Dusty the option of resting Dempster on days he's pitched consecutively. He'd also give us a fourth quality late inning arm. At the deadline, we'll have a better guage of what the team needs and other teams may be getting more desperate for bullpen help and be willing to offer up a higher level prospect or a quality major leaguer for him.
  4. Aside from a massive amount of injuries, is there any way that Angel makes this team? I don't think Guzman makes the team out of spring training. There are too many pitchers ahead of him in the competition for a rotation spot. Guzman has to prove he can be healthy.
  5. I'm not sure a package deal would work in many of those instances, but as time allows, I'll take a shot at some deal. I think part of the difficulty right now is that it's impossible to know how situations in other team's camps will sort themselves out. Take Boston for example. Assume Foulke is still stuggling, and Williamson is pitching lights out, and the Cubs are prepared to go with Hairston at second, then maybe a deal Williamson for Graffanino could happen. Atlanta to me would be the place I'd look most intently to deal him. They could have the largest need for a closer and look to contend.
  6. Williamson could likely net Langerhans from Atlanta.
  7. The smarter move could be to hold on to Williamson past spring training, even if the Cubs plan to trade him. Given that Dempster, Eyre, Howry, and Ohman are locks for the pen, the Cubs still have room for two or three more. Wuertz likely gets one of those spots. Keeping Williamson takes up the other. Williams and Rusch likely take up starter's spots until mid april when Wood comes off the DL. Wellemeyer will have to be traded. Novoa could be sent to Iowa until an opening is created. When Wood returns, Williams or Rusch could be shifted to the pen. That's likely when a decision on Williamson will need to be made. By that time, some other teams situations may be shaking out a little more clearly. Trading Williamson at the end of April or middle of May could bring a greater return than trading him in March.
  8. The good news continues. According to Bruce Miles, Link, Wood threw 20 more pitches from a mound on Tuesday.
  9. Mike Kiely opines this morning that Williamson is likely to be traded. Link. The article also indicates that Williamson wouldn't mind going somewhere he would have an opportunity to close. If Williamson proves he's healthy, here is my run-down of possible trade scenarios. 1. Atlanta. The Braves need a closer. Currently their options are down to Chris Rietsma, Joey Devine, and Blaine Boyer. There may be some others in the mix there, but none have the experience or success in the role. 2. Boston. The Red Sox are hoping that Foulke bounces back, but if he doesn't, the Red Sox could be looking for a closer or else will use Timlin. Williamson pitched well for the Red Sox and could fit their need. 3. Cleveland. The Indians brought back Wickman for the role, but if Williamson is healthy, he might be a better option. 4.Reds. Coffey or Weathers look to handle the duties, but Williamson could be better than both of those options. 5. Orioles. Is Chris Ray ready? Would you trust LaTroy there if he isn't? 6. Phillies. How much does Tom Gordon have left? Williamson might be an option for the Phillies if Gordon is done.
  10. From the Trib... Link I'd look to tear up the final year of this deal and re-structure it to pay Lee something like this: 2 million signing bonus. 06: 9.5 million 07: 11 million 08: 11 million 09: 12 million 10: 14 million option with a 2 million buyout. At it's highest, it's a 5 year59.5 million deal. At it's cheapest it is 4 years, 47.5 deal. I think it's a fair deal for both sides.
  11. I think that's a pretty weak interpretation of what he wrote. I didn't get anything of the sort out of that article. I didn't either. In fact, Will has made it known that he is a big Cubs fan and would like nothing more than to see the team do well and succeed. I think what bothered him most is that the Cubs wouldn't speak to him or about his "rumor" until he printed it. Then, after it created such a hubabaloo, they commented.
  12. Will Carroll offers this on the Bagwell scenario:
  13. Link. Apparently, now Wood is ahead of schedule. That's good news. I also like his sarcastic reference to the Chicago media. :lmao:
  14. I still have two bleacher seats available for 6/26 against the Brewers. Let me know if you may be interested.
  15. I don't recall ever seeing a figure of Aramis.
  16. I'm a coonass by birth. My father and all his kinfolk are from Marksville. My mother is from up north, so I guess I'm only half coon ass.
  17. Todd Jones was also quite entertaining during BP when I sat in the bleachers for a Marlins game last year. And I still owe Pierre an apology for the things we said he was doing to Miguel Cabrera.
  18. It's not based on "career" in my opinion. It's based on who you'd want as your first baseman RIGHT NOW. Given the choice of picking Lee or Pujols, I think everybody outside of Chicago would take Pujols. Heck, even if you base it on last season, you'd probably want Pujols (based on Win Shares). No, if you base it on last season, I'd want Lee who was better offensively and defensively.
  19. Thanks for the great articles, Bruce. I'm still holding out hope for a Cedeno-Walker middle infield on Opening Day!
  20. On Wednesday, the Cubs play an intra-sqaud scrimage with Guzman facing off against Hill. I'm ready for some baseball. Link
  21. What, there aren't any hills in Louisiana? There are some in the Central part...but nothing major. And please don't call me a redneck from Louisiana. I'm a coon ass, sir. I don't care what you call me, just don't call me a bigot. By the way, I've never heard that term (coon ass) before. What in the world does it come from? (edited for clarity) From dictionary.com,
  22. Good article about Ronny by our favorite Cubs beat writer. Link.
  23. From Mike Kiley's article this morning. Link. While I found that interesting, this note about Miller is also intriquing.
  24. Cabrera in Yankee pinstripes makes a lot of sense. The question is what do they have to give the Fish; not much, I think. Maybe the Yankees could build them a stadium in exchange for Cabrera and Willis. 8-[
