  1. I think Steve Garvey and Shawn Kemp teach at that school.
  2. I was not high on McClain; however, I was very high on Dubois. My opinions on Dubois had little to do with his spring performance and more to do with the fact that he had hit at every level of the minors, including being MVP of the AFL. Doesn't that suggest that we can't just use minor league numbers to determine whether a rookie should make the team or not and how successful they will be if they make it? McClain and Dubois have both had very good minor league careers but have done nothing in the majors. Here are the last AAA season stats of three players before going to MLB: Player A: 438 AB .279/.347/.772 9 HR 61 RBI 35 SB Player B: 516 AB .271/.333/.738 8 HR 40 RBI 27 SB Player C: 462 AB .292/.373/.797 13 HR 55 RBI 39 SB Actually, those are more anomalies. Comprehensive studies show that minor league numbers are the best way to guage what a player will do in the pros, especially for hitters. They aren't, however, infallible. And if you focus on the outliers, you'll always find exceptions.
  3. That also guarantees Marshall a spot in my opinion.

  5. I just saw it on http://www.rotoworld.com. Now that Lenny is looking for work, maybe he can be our 25th man again! I kid, I kid!
  6. Is this a split squad for the Angels today, Bruce? Thanks for all of the info. Any talk on the waiver wire, i.e., what type of player Hendry is on the lookout for? (And Bruce has left the building before I could submit my post ... my stupid job obligations. They just don't pay me enough to keep me from distracting myself with reading and yammering about Cubs baseball.) It's not a split squad for the Angels, but I do believe some have broken camp already for a split squad tomorrow at San Francisco. I don't see any major moves. The Cubs feel someone like Bynum might even make the A's. What about the rumor we've heard of Kielty? I haven't heard it in Cubs camp. Thanks. I do think he'd make a great 4th OF if the A's wanted to deal him.

  8. I think that usually happens when BP runs these projections each year. It is a positive that the Cubs only project one game behind the Cardinals.
  9. Who? He's talking about Rusch. And I agree with goony. I think the Cubs have some questions about Williams. As to their feelings about [expletive], I think that the way Rusch stepped into the rotation in 2004 and delivered some pretty big innings for us has left an indelible impression on Baker, Hendry, et al. I think that in itself helps Rusch in the eyes of management.
  10. so unless a trade happens, it looks like Theriot will be on the Opening Day roster.
  11. This is a great story. It reminds me of some things I heard about Will Clark in his days with the Texas Rangers. Most of the talk around town was about how big a jerk Clark was. Then, I learned that Clark habitually visited the terminally ill children at one of the local hospitals. They said that while on homestands, it was not uncommon for Clark to be there but that he didn't ever want it reported in the media because he was not doing it for the attention.
  12. I'm officially sicker of spring training. Cubs go this way: Pierre, CF Hairston, 2B Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Jones, RF Murton, LF Perez, SS Blanco, C Zambrano, P No Cedeno.
  13. Freddie Bynum it's being discussed more here. Or maybe Kielty.
  14. If the Mets really thought Pagan was the next Beltran, they would not have simply sold his contract to the Cubs.
  15. How about Koronka for Kielty. Now that's a deal I could swing.
  16. Pagan = Ced Landrum There! I said it!
  17. Brandon Watson outplayed Church this spring and deserved to start. Church was sent to the minors rather than other players because he has options left and really needs the at bats to find his hitting stroke. Church was hitting .200 with one double and one homer in 55 at bats. Watson was hitting .311 with a .368 on-base percentage and had 7 steals in 8 attempts. But why should Church have had to prove himself this spring? His major league track record shoudl weigh more than spring at bats. Church's spring numbers look eerily similar to spring stats that Ryno and Bagwell used to put up during the spring in their primes. Teams place way too much emphasis on the at bats a player gets in the spring when he is trying to get himself into shape.
  18. Burnitz wasn't average to above average. He was below average for a RF. His numbers were horrible!

  20. If Pierre thinks his limited skills will bring him 13 million, au revoir Monsieur Pierre.
  21. Apparently, Pierre's camp is not interested in negotiating right now. Furcal's contract seems to have them believing the market for his services will be higher. I wonder how far apart they are with Lee, and what Lee's asking for? On Pierre, they're mistaken. Colletti is one of the biggest morons in the sport. He bid against himself for Furcal, but he shouldn't be in the market when/if Pierre his FA this winter. I don't think the other GMs are suddenly going to raise their willingness to pay for a leadoff man by 3-5 mil per year because one of them was an idiot the year before. I think it's obvious that Lee wants a 5/60 deal. The hold-up is likely how much increase he gets this season and what savings the Cubs get down the road. Those issues likely aren't insurmountable, but those are probably the factors that are holding things up.
