  1. I've always hated Jeter, but if he's hooked up with Alba, i'll have to give him some props.
  2. i used to have it but i guess it ran out you'd think they'd send an email or something Are you going to renew it, or shall I take it.
  3. This doesn't look like the same Auburn team I watched play LSU.
  4. Holy Crap! He's going to want to be traded after this!
  5. Ideally? Yes. Likely? No. I think Hendry will interview others. Whether he interviews anyone that I'd like, I don't know. I just don't see Hendry limiting his search to those three.
  6. I'd like to hear Washington's ideas before I'd jump on his bandwgn. If he's bought into the Beane school of thought, he'd move way up on my list. If he demonstrated a knowledge of a run expectancy chart, I might put him right behind Larry Dierker.
  7. If we were able to unload Jacque or decided to try Jacque at CF, I'd be interested in Sheffield on a one-year deal with an option for the second. If Sheffield gets healthy, he could be a formidable bat in the middle of the order.
  8. He appears to be very old school and sold to the conventional ways of thinking. He gives away too many outs.
  9. LSU-Florida. Big game today! Hopefully LSU will go to the swamp and take it to the Gators! Geaux Tigers!
  10. I took Pierre's because the others I wanted were taken. And now, it looks like I'll have to sponsor Mercker.
  11. As if things don't get confusing enough, this article says Girardi is the front-runner in Washington. What it appears to me is that no one really knows what the hell the Nationals are planning to do.
  12. According to this article, Piniella and Girardi are the top two candidates in Washington, with Baker, Acta, and others listed as possibles. This article implies Piniella and Baker are the leaders and adds a few other candidates.
  13. Cubs twiddle their thumbs. I don't think the Nats are going to act too quickly. If they are going to interview Pena and Acta, they will have to wait until those teams are eliminated.
  14. You want some choices, I've made plenty. 1. Larry Dierker. See my thread on Dierker if you want reasons. Or better yet, buy his book, This Ain't Brain Surgery. You can get if for under 10 bucks on Amazon. 2. Davey Johnson. He's currently employed by the Nats as a consultant. He may be done managing. I don't know. If he desires a spot and can be released from his contract with the Nationals, I'd take him second. 3. Bobby Valentine. I'd be interested to hear some of what Ron Washington has to say about the game. If I liked what I heard, he could be a good choice. I'm not opposed to Brenly. I'd hope that he had learned some since his stint in Arizona. There's probably some other guys that I'd liketo have as well. Since I want a manager who understands run expectancy, there's just not an abundance of those in the managerial pool.
  15. I think insurance is covering some of Hampton's deal. I'm not sure how much, but I think much of it is covered by insurance.
  16. It would be freaking hilarious if the A's win the World Series, so Hendry spends the next few days afterwards trying to read Moneyball so he can emulate their philosophies.
  17. Vance, Why would you want ARod over Cabrera? The guy is just 23, gets better every year in a pitcher's park, is fearless and playoff proven and is the only hitter in the game who could give Pujols a run for the money. Just curious ... Miguel would be my top choice by a long shot. Open question for all - I've seen Giles' name as a possibility for a while now, but have not heard why the Braves would even think of letting him go. Why is he presumed to be available? As for me, my wish list starts with retaining ARam. Bottom line for me is to have at least three (preferably four) proven 900+ OPS hitters. DLee and ARam plus one from Cabrera, Manny, Tejada, ARod, or Jones would be the core of a solid offense, especially if we also add in Soriano. We do that and, with Barrett at C, we could live with guys like Theriot, Cedeno, Murton and Pie or a stopgap vet CF to fill the other positions in the field and in the lineup to keep the budget at a reasonable level to also acquire 2 solid innings-eating, GB-throwing SPs. After thinking about it, I'd probably take Cabrera over Arod. Either one would be a great acquisition. If Rodriguez can still handle SS, I might take him over Cabrera.
  18. A great ambassador for the game has passed. Link.
  19. Thinking about this idea some more and reading some of the stuff you folks have written about Jacque Jones and the thought that he may want out of Chicago, one variation on this mock deal is to add Jacque and remove the clause requiring the Braves to send $11M in cash (coincidentally that's exactly what Jones will be paid in the next 2 seasons). So the modified trade would be: Cubs send Jacque Jones, Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol Braves send Andruw Jones and Tim Hudson No cash trades hands Jacque would play either LF or RF depending on whether the Braves decide to trade Langerhans or Francoeur (it appears they will trade one this offseason). Braves would now save $14M in 2007, $7M in 2008 and $13M in 2009. Cubs would now have an opportunity to find a better player for RF. Hoops If that worked out, I think the Cubs could sign Sheffield if his option is declined. Potential line-up: 2b Theriot LF Murton 1b Lee 3b Ramirez CF Jones RF Sheffield C Barrett SS Izturis That's not a bad line-up. Our rotation would be Zambrano, Hudson, Prior, Hill and Mateo/Guzman/Ryu or a FA signing. It's not a bad team.
  20. Unfortunately there's a lot to complain about and very little not to complain about... Yeah, but we're starting to get to the point where we're almost creating things to complain about. That's not good. I'm not complaining about Girardi; I'm critiquing him. I thought that was the kind of dialogue forums are created for. I will continue to critique in light of all the Girardi love around here. And hopefully, I won't have to continue the criticism into this season, as I hope Hendry will choose someone other than Joe. If Joe is the choice, I will try to temper my pessimism, but somehow I don't see a Cubs-Girardi marriage ending well.
  21. If my choices are Piniella, Girardi, or Brenly...I think I'd choose Brenly. Neither are ideal, but I think Brenly looks better than the other two. Of course, until a decision is made, I'm holding out hope that Hendry's deliberance is a sign that he is considering more than just those three. My point by including Pena is to show that Girardi has done nothing more than what Pena accomplished, yet many would likely rail Pena a choice while proclaiming Girardi a "match made in heaven." In fact, Pena might be a better choice than Girardi.
  22. While I don't want Piniella, I still can't see how Girardi and the Cubs are a match made in heaven. I'd rather have someone who is not so tied to the conventional wisdom, small ball, method of management. Largely, Vance, I agree with you. However, I REALLY don't want Piniella, and while Girardi is a bit of a conventional wisdom type of guy, I don't think he is to the same extent as many of the other old-school types. I would not complain at all if we hired Girardi (even if he's not perfect), but I sure would complain if we hired Piniella. Until a hire is made, I'll still hold out hope for a good hire, not an acceptable one. I'm not sold on Girardi at all. And from what the Marlins bloggers had to say, my fears about Girardi seem to be well-founded. I'm hoping that Hendry's deliberance in this process is a sign that he will look at numerous candidates and not just the ones who have been reported thus far.
  23. While I don't want Piniella, I still can't see how Girardi and the Cubs are a match made in heaven. I'd rather have someone who is not so tied to the conventional wisdom, small ball, method of management.
