It's the silly season. Bruce, One question. Do you know if the Cubs have any interest in upgrading at either SS (Izturis) or 2nd (DeRosa/Theriot)? There is a rumor that Marcus Giles might be non-tendered. The Cubs will not look into Marcus Giles if he's non-tendered. They're happy with their infield, as you heard Mr. Hendry say. Is there any interest in Wilkerson? Ryan Church? -

I read today in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, that the Braves have been exploring trade talks to acquire Baldelli. Link. If the Braves are pursuing Baldelli, would they be willing to part with Andruw Jones? The Rays want Chuck James but the Braves are offering Davies. What if the Cubs stepped in and helped the deal go through while at the same time netting Andruw Jones? The Cubs could swap Joneses with the Braves and send a couple of pitchers in the Marshall, Marmol, Mateo group. To help the Braves with the loss of Escobar and Giles, the Cubs might even offer up Patterson, Cedeno, or Theriot. Sure, the Braves could get Baldelli and keep Jones. Baldelli could play a corner spot and then replace Andruw in 2008. But if the Braves are hot after Baldelli, his greater value is in CF. Jones could be moved. Getting involved in this could help in a number of ways. The Braves might be able to use some of the pieces gained from the Cubs to entice the Rays to do the deal with Davies instead of James. Or, by getting more pitchers from the Cubs, the Braves may be less reluctant to send James to the Rays to get the deal done. Either way, I think these are discussions the Cubs should become involved in. A. Jones would look very nice in CF patrolling between Murton and Soriano.

Letting Mark DeRosa get in the way of a pursuit of Giles is dum, dum, dum, dum, dum.

With DeRosa's ability to play all over the field, there shouldn't be a reason not to pursue Giles.

Depending on the cost, I'd be very, very interested in Wilkerson.

If Ensberg is non-tendered, someone will sign him as a starter. He's pretty good with the glove and he has some pop and can get on base. He gets crucified in Houston because he doesn't play with fire. He's really laid back and acts sometimes as if he doesn't care. I seriously doubt he's non-tendered, but if he is, we really don't have a shot for him. Look for him to land somewhere as a starter. Giles is a very interesting proposition. I wish we hadn't promised DeRosa secondbase because Giles would be idea as a number two slot hitter behind Soriano. We have a glut of pitchers, so none of those names really jump out at me. Chacon could be an interesting player to look at, but I'm sure he'll land with a team in desperate need of SP. I look to St. Louis or maybe Cincinnati to sign him if he's non-tendered.

Carolina's playoff hopes could be swirling today. With a loss today and still having to play the Saints in the Dome, I'm not sure they will make it. The Giants are probably the best of the WC contenders. Garcia has given the Eagles some hope as well.

It's not that simple, though. Boston is offering 40 million in guaranteed cash. If Matsuzaka goes back to Japan and hurts himself, what would he be able to get?

I don't blame Boras for the high posting fee and I don't see why Matsuzaka has to be responisble for Bostons bid. That was their choice to bid in the 50's not his. But I don't see how 5/40 isn't a fair offer for someone who can't negotiate with other teams and has never pitched a single major league inning.

again, i disagree. matsuzaka has shown what he can do against major league-caliber talent in the WBC. when guys like gil meche are getting $11m/year, ted lilly $10m/year, and jason marquis $7m/year, offering matsuzaka money equivalent to marquis is lowballing him. hard. Yes, but those guys are FA. Matsuzaka is not. It's a world of difference. Considering he has two choices, play for Boston or return to Japan and hope his team posts him again next season, eight million isn't a bad offer. Furthermore, it's not like Boston sucks and are desperate for Daisuke.

no, the posting fee should not matter at all. you have to pay for those exclusive rights, and it should not factor in to your negotiations with the player. boston knew this going in, and they knew they were going to deal with boras. he's doing what's best for his client, who can probably make quite a bit more than boston's lowball offer next season. Saying the posting fee shouldn't matter is ludicrous. It's still part of the costs Boston incurs. Just as you're trying to put this on Boston, Matsuzaka and Boras knew this was part of the process when Matsuzaka requested to be posted. If he thinks going back to Japan is best for his client, then fine. He can do that. Eight million is a fair offer. Boston paid a premium to not have to negotiate on the open market. The posting system is more at fault here than Matsuzaka or the Red Sox.

Then if I were him I'd accept a 1 year 10 and go free agent after that or is he allowed to do that? Not unless Boston stipulates it in the contract. By MLB rules, he is Boston's property for 6 years if he signs a contract with them. They could stipulate that after the first contract (if less than 6 yrs) Boston would non-tender him, but Boston may feel that 1 year is too little to do with a 51 million dollar posting.

i disagree. this is very different from an arbitration player, because matsuzaka has the option of not playing for the team and eventually playing in major league baseball for another team. an arbitration-eligible player does not. boston is using their massive bid for his rights to try to guilt matsuzaka/boras into accepting their lowball offer, which is way below what matsuzaka is actually worth. i do agree that the system is very, very broken. and it looks like boston is exploiting it to their advantage, just like every other "loophole" they can find. every day, this team finds more and more ways for me to think they are worse for baseball than the yankees 8 million a year is not a "low-ball" offer considering this guy has never pitched a single major league inning.

A 5 year 40 million dollar offer is very fair considering he's never pitched a single major league inning. The Red Sox at least made a fair offer considering they had to spend 51 million for his rights. Boras just seems clueless that it isn't a free-market situation. It's not like the Red Sox low-balled him with a 2-4 million dollar contract. They're willing to give him 8 million a year guaranteed. If he doesn't like that, let him play for his 2 million or a little more in Japan and hope that they don't further overwork his arm and reduce his value for when he can negotiate on the open market.

I don't think there's any blame on Boston at all. The reason a team is willing to pony up so much in a posting fee is because they have exclusive rights. Boras is trying to negotiate a contract as if Matsuzaka is a FA. He's not. He's like a first year arby guy. He has the choice of playing for what the team is offering or not at all. The only difference here is that Matsuzaka can go back to Japan and play for less than what the Red Sox want to pay him. Does the system suck? Sure it does. But trying to act like Matsuzaka is getting cheated is ridiculous. It looks like Boston made a fair offer considering they have no competition for his services.

Yeah, while I usually don't root for the Cowboys, given the Bears tie-breaker situation I would like to see a Saints loss here. Will Hollis Thomas not playing and Horn and Colston likely to be inactive, I really like the Cowboys chances.

Totally agree. People on this board hate everything. They hate the sun. They hate air. If you ask 4000 people for their opinions on anything, there will be people that don't like it. So any subject that gets discussed on the boards will have people in violent objection to it. I could just as easily say that this board likes everything, too. That was a valiant attempt at spin. :P There has been a predominantly negative tone here lately. The past two seasons haven't really yielded much to be positive about.
