  1. I might take Guillen if it were in a swap for Marquis.
  2. Bruce in his latest blog indicates the Cubs are still interested in Peavy, but trading for him may not be the top priority. Link.
  3. It's the hall of fame....not the hall of very good.
  4. I really don't understand Veal not being rostered, especially considering Berg was rostered.
  5. I don't see how he would clear waivers. Too many teams need pitching, and Hill is the kind of guy people would gamble on. That he throws with his left hand just makes him that much more appealing. I agree with you. I just meant the only way he'd still be a Cub is if he clears waivers. I don't think there's enough of a chance for him to prove he belongs between now and the end of spring training for the Cubs to risk giving him a roster spot. They will either try to trade him for whatever they can get which won't be very much, or they will place him on waivers at the end of the spring and I would fully expect someone to claim him and hope that he works out his problems. While Rich Hill as a major leaguer may or may not be done, Rich Hill as a Cub is.
  6. After his most recent performance, I don't think there's any way Hill will be a part of the Cubs plans in 2009. The only was he'll still be a part of the organization by the end of spring training is if no one claims him on waivers.
  7. Probably true, but I figured it was worth discussing.
  8. According to the Houston Chronicle, there are rumblings about the need to cut payroll in Houston and that Valverde could be a casualty. Link. My guess is the Astros would not want to trade him to us, but he could fill the closer spot for one year nicely. That would then slide Gregg to the seventh inning and Marmol back to his usual high leverage situations. Thoughts?
  9. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution says the Cubs are still after Peavy. Link.
  10. ugh If that lead-off bat means Furcal, I could go for that only because Furcal would be an improvement over Theriot. If it means anything else, I'll pass.
  11. The use of the phrase "unforseen" circumstances is strange. What could have happened that would be unforseen?
  12. How does he like the nickname Samardzilla?
  13. I'm not sure the Cubs have all of what the Padres want and so the need for a third or fourth team.
  14. Ryan Harvey? I kid, I kid.
  15. Dave OBrien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution believes the Braves will ultimately end up with Peavy. Link.
  16. Towers is now saying he may try to re-start talks with the Braves. Link.
  17. This article on the Dempster signing says the Cubs and Padres are still trying to find a third team to help consumate a Peavy deal. Link.
  18. I'll have to see a lot more from Samardzilla before I trust him to close.
  19. I think I'm going to call him Samardzilla from now on.
  20. Based on what we know, the Braves are out. The Cubs are the only team left on Peavy's list that still is trying to get him. So, a couple of things could happen. The Padres go back to Peavy and tell him that either needs to expand his list or prepare to remain a Padre. Now, if the Padres do this, Peavy could call their bluff and refuse to expand his list of teams. Then I guess what Towers does would depend on how strong the mandate to move Peavy is. If he has to move him, he'll either take the Cubs deal or call the Braves back and see if they are still willing to deal. Peavy could expand his list which would open things up to a few other teams. The Padres could also wait until the FA market shakes out and hope the Cubs and Braves get outbid by other teams for the free agents they seek and get desperate to go. Of course, that could backfire if both the Cubs and Braves are able to sign other players.
  21. I didn't see this being discussed anywhere. Link. Would a deal of Pie, Cedeno, and Marshall be enough?
  22. As I mentioned before, it looks like the Nats may be interested in Dunn. Link.
