    Randy Galloway of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram weighs in on how the Rangers appeared to be the mecca of steroid use, yet no one ever batted an eye. Link. I find it odd, or interesting, or whatever, that apparently Buck Showalter had his suspicions about Arod. Link.

    One of the few spots up for grabs this spring is the fifth starter, so I thought I would start a thread where we could discuss that. Barring a trade or an unexpected signing, it appears the leading candidates are Sean Marshall, Aaron Heilman,Jeff Samardzilla, Chad Gaudin, and the dark horse Mitch Atkins. Marshall appears to be the front runner according to Lou. Link.

    According to ESPN.com, the Braves are making a run at Griffey. Link. I don't think Griffey has much left, but Atlanta could use another outfielder. Depending on the cost, it might not be a bad move for the Braves.

    I think the Cubs should inquire if Pudge would be interested in a back-up role.

    Andy Petitte had the same surgery in 2004. He returned in 2005, and had a remarkable season. Of course, Andy may have been aided by the juice....so ...uhm...never mind.

    Apparently the doctors have told him he should be able to pitch in MLB games by the middle of July, possibly earlier. That's still a half of a season. In Sheets's eyes, the amount of money teams are offering him to rehab and pitch in 2009 will still be there in June or July. And while he's unable to create much of a bidding war now, he may be able to then. In June/July, he'll still have to option of signing a deal for 2009 and hitting the market for 2010, or he might leverage it into a long term deal. He's not hurting for money, so what's the difference to him in signing a low ball contract now that will still be there in June. The only difference is he could rehab with a major league team, but right now that isn't all that important to him.

    It's a gamble on his part for certain, but imagine the bidding war between contenders that could develop if Sheets looks good in workouts. Teams that feel they are one pitcher away and have payroll space will be going after him. He's taking a risk, for sure, but it's one that could pay off for him. He might even be able to leverage a team into a long term deal at that point if they are desperate enough.

    Ben Soignier for UL-Monroe is getting a lot of hype here. How is he viewed nationally? Does this kid have a shot at being a decent pro?

    I'm hearing through second and third hand sources...(and by this, I really do mean the friend of a friend of his wife's kinda thing)...that Sheets isn't interested in signing one of those deals. He really wants to get healthy and offer his services around July to a contender, prove he's healthy, and then be back on the market next winter. The Brewers are going to have to pay for his surgery and most of his rehab from what I've heard. He would consider a deal where someone pays for 09 and gets 10, but it's going to be more expensive than anything most teams would consider. He thinks that if he's throwing well for teams in July with a clean bill of health that he can get 5+ million for the half season of 2009 and he also thinks he can get 13+ for 2010 and beyond.

    According to this article, Sheets's surgery was performed on Tuesday by Dr. Andrews. Sheets hopes to return following the All-Star break. I guess if we need pitching help in the second half of the year, we can join other contenders in bidding on Sheets.

    I went in 2005 and sat way up top around the infield. It was a neat experience.
