  1. I'll second the original post. Tim and the mods have done an excellent job providing a troll free environment to discuss the Cubs and many other topics as well. Congrats on a job very well done!
  2. I'm not sure it's that simple. If you have two portraits of Abe Lincoln (exact duplicates), and one of them is documented to have been in my attic, while the other has been documented to have been hanging in the halls of the White House, then most people would pay more for the one from the White House, don't you think? Wouldn't that make it "more valuable"? But in your example the "value" comes from it having been in a prominent place not from the work of art itself. It's why people will buy a brick from Busch stadium and not from my house. People are valuing sentimentality not quality there. But if you bought the Abe Lincoln portrait documented from the White House, it's value would not change regardless of where you hang it.
  3. I think that a large percentage of ball players cheat. And you cheer many of them. Basically, YOU are turning a blind eye to the ones who haven't been "busted" yet. If you're naive enough to think that Bonds, Sosa, Palmiero, and McGwire are the only "cheaters" on baseball, then I've got some property near Lake Michigan that you might be interested in. I'm not turning a "blind eye" to any. I can only incriminare those who have been "busted." I know you like analogies, so I'll give you one here. I'm a teacher. Do some of my students cheat? Surely. But when they make the grade, I applaud them (or reward them). Do I occasionally applaud "cheaters"? Probabaly. But until I "bust" them, no one is a cheater. I'm not turning a "blind-eye" to cheaters in my classroom. If and when they're busted, I'll deal with them. The same with MLB. I may unknowing cheer a cheater. That doesn't mean I'm hypocritical or turning a "blind eye." If and when they are caught, I'll adjust my feelings toward them. If I applied your reasoning to my classroom, I wouldn't punish anyone I caught cheating unless I was sure to catch all of them....or I wouldn't applaud any of my students good work until I was sure none were cheaters. Either of those scenarios is pretty asinine.
  4. Once again, a performance's value is intrinsic. It isn't dependent upon how well the value was capitalized by those around him. Is the value of a Monet diminished because an art collector keeps it hidden in an attic? No. It still is just as valuable even if that value isn't utilized.
  5. I'd do the deal provided you already have Moss and Horn along with Collins. I'd be hesitant to trade Eli though.
  6. I found this information on Dotel. Unless something has changed since June, apparently they believe he'll be ready. My guess is that if things go slowly, he could be looking at being ready around the All-Star Break. Either way, a Dotel-Dempster back-end of the bullpen would be very nice.
  7. God, please let Dusty go home to LA. PLEASE!!!!
  8. I loveD Dotel, but will he be ready next year? Or are looking at midseason? Whenever he's ready. I'd give him a two year deal with lots of incentives. We have additional arms we can use in the pen if he's not going to be ready for awhile.
  9. My list is simple and realistic. 1. Sign Brain Giles. (This is priority one, two, three, and four!) 2. Re-sign Nomar for SS. Pick-up Walker's option. This is the middle infield unless a trade for Castillo or Giles develops which is unlikely. Cedeno backs up both positions. 3. Sign Dotel for the pen. 4. If Castillo isn't traded for, sign Kenny Lofton to one year deal. My line-up: Lofton Murton Lee Giles Ramirez Walker Garciaparra Barrett Pitching staff: Zambrano Prior Wood Maddux Williams Bullpen: Dempster Dotel Ohman Wuertz Novoa Hill Bench: Cedeno Hairston Theriot Blanco Cruz Jr. Grieve
  10. Lemieux is the only guy on my team I've heard of! LOL. I was going to try to find a hockey fan to help with my team, so I polled 9 fellow teachers. None of them know anything about hockey.
  11. Weaver is an intriguing option. Millwood would be nice as well. Rogers has serious character issues, but put up a nice line this year. Of course, why are we looking at a starter when we have Jerome Williams?
  12. Then why do Cubs fans cheer when Derrek Lee comes to bat, and not when Pujols comes to bat? Why do they cheer when Prior strikes someone out, but not when Carpenter strikes someone out? Are you all a bunch of hypocrites? Notice I said chide Sosa for being a cheat. And that's frankly my point. I cheer Cubs because they are Cubs and boo others because they play for the other team. On the other hand, I wouldn't call another player on another team a cheat for doing something that I'd turn a blind eye to. For example, to call Sosa a cheater, you must admit that McGwire is too. If you cheer McGwire because he's a Cardinal, fine with me. Just don't pretend he's any better of a person than Sosa, Bonds, or Palmeiro. He's not.
  13. Sosa corked a practice bat he accidentally used in a game, and then apologized for it. He made a mistake. He loved to cheer everyone with loud music. Threw large spring training parties for his team mates, gave large amounts of money to victims of hurricane Georges, and was always smiling and showing love to the fans. Why does any of that make him worse than McGwire who always appeared surly and not nearly as fan friendly as Sosa? (Now does that sound like parisan fan spin? Sure it does. But the fact remains, there's just as much evidence that Sosa is a good human being as there is that McGwire is. There's probably equal amount to attack them as well.) The truth is that when you cheer McGwire and then chide Sosa (or any other player for being a cheat) you can't really expect to be taken seriously. The bias devalues any legitimacy. If that's how you want to be, you have your right, but by turning a blind eye in the name of fan bias, then when you ridicule a player of the other side, you can't be taken seriously.
  14. What does Vizcaino's sexual preferences have to do with pinch hitting? :-s
  15. If Clemens could get 17 million after filing for arbitration last year, what do you think he'll ask for this year after posting a sub-2 ERA? I'm thinking 20 million to keep him around.
  16. So it's not hypocritical for me to call McGwire a cheat, liar, and horrible human being and yet still cheer Sosa. Cool, glad we got it settled. Basically, you've affirmed fan bias. If a player is loyal to an organization and done other admirable things in the name of the organization and brought enjoyment to its fans, it's entirely ok to look the other way concerning the character of such an individual. However, if a player hasn't exhibited those traits to the team which you are a fan of, it's entirely ok to chide and ridicule such a player for the same traits you turn a blind eye to of your own player. Or, if my child misbehaves, that's just kids being kids; if your child does it, he's a bad kid. I understand completely.
  17. Right you are, but they owe Clemens 3 million of his 2004 salary in 2006. I also think they owe Kent some money in 2006, but I can't say definitively.
  18. Fair enough, then. Likewise, if tens of thousands of Cardinal fans want to applaud McGwire, then you shouldn't have a problem with that, either. As Americans, that's their right. It certainly is their right. And if you'll read carefully, I've made little comment on the issue. I do, however, think it is appropriate for others to comment on it. I'm not surprised that Cardinal nation applauded McGwire. Bias is a common factor among sports fans. We tend to like those who play for our teams and ignore their faults, while at the same time chide or ridicule the faults of those who play for rivals. What is rather hypocritical is when Cardinal fans applaud McGwire, yet the same fans held up "Cork" signs when Sammy played in Busch in 2003 and 2004. However, I'm sure you weren't among those.
  19. We're exercising our American right to speak about whatever we want. At least we've chosen an appropriate place to do it...on our own forum. We witness what takes place and comment if we so desire. No one makes you come here to read them. People do such all the time. I'm sorry that you take offense, but as long as I live in a place where it is free to do so, I'm not going to let anyone tell me what it's my business to comment upon. That doesn't mean anyone has to lend credence to my opinions (or anyone else's for that matter), but I'm still entitled to them.
  20. You're right, Hoops. Bagwell is guaranteed 17 million next season (6 million is deferred however) with 18 million for 2007 with the 10 million dollar buy-out. To revise my figure (not including defered money), the Astros will have 42 million ties up in Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, and Pettitte. With what they'll have to pay the other players in the line-up, I wouldn't expect any additions to the Astros this offseason.
  21. Vance, Are you sure about this? I think the contract is guaranteed for 2006 at $17M. I think the Astros have the option in 2007. Hoops You may be right...hmmm. I was certain I had it right, but I'll have to check.
  22. I don't consider the "Rivalries" section of this forum to be devoted to the Cubs. This entire web community is devoted to the Cubs. Your assertion that it's none of our business what goes on in Busch Stadium is as ridiculous as my saying its none of your business what we discuss here.
  23. Like Nomar is the reason the teams haven't won.
  24. I don't see why it's any business to a Cardinal fan what Cub fans discuss on a forum devoted to the Cubs. (See how weak that argument is.)
  25. Craig Biggio signed a one-year extension with the Astros Sunday. Link The real question will be what the Astros do with Bagwell. He has a 17.5 million dollar option for 2006. If the Astros decline the option, they can save 7.5 million with a 10 million dollar buy-out. I'm pretty sure they'll decline the option, but ten million is a very steep buy-out. The Astros will have over 30 million tied into three players next season: Biggio (4 million), Pettite (17 million), and Bagwell (10 million minimum). Add in Berkman's 10 million, and that's a minimum 41 million for four players. If Clemens returns, he'll command 15-17 million as well. I don't look for the Astros to be too active in FA signings this year when you consider Ensberg, Everett, and Lidge are all arbitration eligible.
