  1. No. There are valid explanations, and there are invalid explanations. Many teams have gone through long stretches of failing in close games. The Cubs seem to have done so for longer, but it appears that way to the fans of many teams. I would like to see statistics for the Cubs in 1 run games over the last 100 years, and compare them to the statistics of other teams. That might shed some light on the curse garbage. Tonights valid explanation was putting a terrible relief pitcher into a crucial situation. I'm tired of seeing Lou make the same moves over and over expecting something to change. The only relief pitchers that have been decent this year are Wuertz and Cotts, and yet Lou continues to use Eyre in big situations. Eyre is not a terrible reliever. He's actually had a pretty decent career, but like most relievers, is not consistent. I'll agree that he probably shouldn't be coming into close games until he finds his next hot streak. Eyre has been a terrible reliever since the end of last year. It was a bad idea for Hendry to sign a mediocre LHP like Eyre and strap the Cubs with him for 3 yrs. The only thing that makes his suckiness worse, is that he is always smiling and joking around like something is funny.

  3. Well said Wow, even the fans are getting the loser attitude. Sure the Cubs have been playing poor, but to say there is nothing they can do to win is idiotic. The only thing the Cubs are cursed with is a moron for a GM that doesn't have a clue how to assemble a team. The Cubs could get Earl Weaver to manage this team and they would still be in last place. Hendry has to go, it is too bad they let him saddle the team long term before he left. they have a team that should be winning. they're 0-5 in 1 run games and derrek lee has no home runs. weird stuff is happening. you better start believing in curses, becaue this curse is a dilly. Yay for stupid BS kneejerk reactions! Repeat after me: Curses are not real. Now, write that on the blackboard 1000 times. Is it possible for the team to outscore their opponents but still end up last in the division? Yes. Is it likely to happen over a 162 game season? No. It can happen, but it is no more likely to happen because of some imaginary voodoo nonsense some people made up to explain a a bizarre longterm aberration. Whats your evidence that curses aren't real? The Red Sox?

  5. That might be the core of a deal, but I would think it would take some tweaking since Zambrano (although a possible free agent)>Santana and Murton (so far in the majors)>Wood. I was under the impression that Wood will be the far superior player, if not this year than in the future. You're right. But we already have a SS. A Gold Glove SS at that.
  6. They could wait until right before game time, but we'd probably get some wind of it as someone would arrive at the clubhouse from Iowa long before then. It would really come in handy for us to befriend the Iowa Cubs announcer, to get some inside scoops.
  7. I think sending down Cedeno would be the right call, at this point. Pie has shown that he can handle CF defensively. Give him a few weeks to adjust with the bat, before yo-yoing him back and forth to AAA. Does anyone know why Miller basically gets a free pass from the press or Lou? (or maybe I'm missing the stories). The guy has been horrible over three starts and has not shown any promise at all. Its not like he is getting tough calls or barely missing his spots. Here is hoping that they don't make the same mistakes they did with Rusch and continue to use him despite his effectiveness.
  8. Lou wants 12 pitchers-that would still leave him with 11. I do like the idea of bringing up Cherrry now and releasing Miller. Then you bring up a starter next week (likely Guzman) and either demote Pie or trade Jones. Jones is the best hitting OF ATM. He is not my favorite player on the Cubs but the Cubs shouldn't be rushing to get rid of him, without being sure that Pie is going to stick.
  9. Except Des Moines on Monday. I have a bad feeling you are right about this. Didn't you watch the 10th inning? Murton is going to be the CF from here on out. :^o
  10. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070422/SPORTS02/704220632/1050 More speculation from Detroit.
  11. Sounds about as permanent as it can get. From the Chicagosports.com
  12. 0-1 is much better. He is on the All Star track this year, no doubt. yeah, that's what i said. on that note, i'll leave the game thread to you whiny babies. I don't understand why noone ever calls you out on your constant name calling. What other point were you making with your statement? 0-1 or 0-4 it is all horrible.
  13. 0-1 is much better. He is on the All Star track this year, no doubt.
  14. Do you have the whole lineup, or just this? So does this mean Murton or Pie sits. Dang, why does Blanco have to play? That's all I know right now. Murton could be in LF. We shall see... Where'd you hear/see this? Wouldn't make much sense to let Pie play vs. the LHP last night and then give him today off. Sounds like a Dusty move.
  15. I disagree that Pie is an automatic out against LHP. Nobody has really seen him enough to determine if that is the case or not. He held his own well last night and hit the ball well twice, the ball just never found a hole. I agree with Brenly, the best thing to do in regard to Pie is to play him everyday against every starting pitcher and let him adjust. One thing Pie has going for him is his speed. He is going to get alot of hits merely based upon his ability to get to 1st base in a hurry. From everything I've seen from so far, he deserves a shot to stick for an extended period of time. His defense alone is a huge improvement over the other OF on the roster.
  16. I think Murton was still in shock when he zoned out and forgot to run home twice in the 8th inning.
  17. Jeff still not missing any bats. Or allowing runs. He's been getting a lot of 2-strike counts, though. Gotta improve the out pitch. Daytona loses 6-4. Yep, gotta get more consistent with that slider. No question. Everytime he pitches his line looks nearly identical 5IP 1K 1ER......he must be doing something right.
  18. Who are the good players on this team beside Lee and Ramirez?? Everyone else looks lost. I'm frustrated with the OF play. Floyd has shown that he has absolutely no range in LF... Murton looks clueless on the bases...and Jones has looked horrible to start the year. Hopefully Pie can hold down CF when Soriano gets back.
  19. Last I heard, Prior was fully healthy and ready to go full speed with the rest of the team.
  20. What is the scoop on Holliman? I remember the Cubs drafting him, but don't remember the scouting report. Is he a guy that relies on control?
  21. Was I seeing things or did Miller actually start throwing some pitches in the 91+ range yesterday? I know that I saw at least one top out over 90, and it seemed he was more consistently in the 88 range, than any of his previous starts. I'm no expert on shoulders, but is it possible that the more he throws, he will continue to get stronger and may end up in the low-mid 90's range?
  22. I remember when we were saying he couldn't possibly be worse than Neifi. Those were the days.
  23. First of all, the difference between Floyd and Murton career OBP wise is not 50-60 pts. Its only 10 points . And the difference between their career power numbers is much greater. Fair or not, until Murton proves otherwise he will be considered a light hitting LF. Second, to say the Cubs never gives prospects a chance or that how they treat Murton is a barometer of future success is ridiculous. In the past years many young players have had chances to make the Cubs or other teams they have been traded to and by in large just never panned out.
  24. It's a mistake to play Floyd over Murton? Not so far it isn't. The '07 regular season numbers disagree with you. This isn't the prospect development league. The Cubs are out to win ballgames. The only position players slugging .400+ are DLee, ARam, DeRosa (now injured), and Floyd. Floyd is one of the better hitters on this team right now and isn't costing us in the field. But I guess you're right, we should play Murton irregardless of performance on the field. I agree, its not like Todd Hollandsworth is getting the bulk of AB's in LF. As long as Floyd continues to hit, I'm not going to sulk and moan about Murton's playing time. The job of the manager is to put the best team on the field. Murton is a decent player and may even be good some day, but its not like Lou is sitting Pujols or anything. For some reason people seem to be overly infatuated with Murton.
  25. Next thing you know Zambrano will leave the game early with right elbow or shoulder soreness.
