  1. I think 2 of 3 is definitely reasonable, but I don't think 3 of 3 was a lot to ask for in Pittsburgh, and I don't think it's too much to ask to come away with out of LA. Teams have their ups and downs, but the Cubs are doing pretty well right now, so hopefully they can keep their game crisp and not let teams onto the field with them if they have no business being there to begin with.
  2. Don't you think you may be exaggerating just a bit? I really like the guy, but do you think the Cubs are anywhere close to getting their money's worth out of him?
  3. oops
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XedseT1KQiI I just found a link to this highlight clip from August of '01 and thought it was interesting to see. I can't believe it was only 5 years ago when we were mentioning names like Ron Coomer, Fred McGriff, Michael Tucker, Robert Machado, etc. And these guys were in first place and cruising after the first week of August.
  5. Not to upset about Walker not playing... he'll still get most of the starts. I would switch Murton and Pagan in the order, but that's just me.
  6. Cubs are also 5-0 in non-Shawn Es-- I mean, in non-Glendon Rusch starts. Keep the streak alive! Isn't that curious.... the CUBS are also 5-0 in games where they don't face Bronson Arroyo !!! Yes, I imagine Bronson Bonds-Arroyo had something to do with those other two as well...

  8. Gameday audio is usually well behind any other method of calling the game, even including the little gameday java application. it's at least 40 seconds behind real time.
  9. Wow. We don't happen to have any more pitchers in the farm system who have never seen action above AA, do we? Anyway, thanks for the updates.
  10. I just got off of work and was all excited about finally having some cubs baseball to come home to, but one glance at the line score quickly deflated that. Are there any bright spots to take frmo the game so far, or does Glendon's pitcihng line and the row of goose eggs next to the Cubs in the line score tell me all I need to know?
  11. In previous years, he either leaves Marshall in and hopes for the best, or he goes to one of few reliable guys in the bullpen whom he has managed to already overuse inside of the first five games. Or he goes to a bum who serves up more than just two runs, and without getting a strikeout first. An early trip to the bullpen always spelled doom, but if they turn out to be as good as they seem so far, we could be in for a very fun season.
  12. Tonight's game left me too excited to go to sleep, and I stumbled onto this thread. After a 3-0 start, I picked 12, but I'm afraid I might be giving the Cards too much credit...
  13. I remember Fred talking about what a great signing Barrett was as soon as Hendry picked him up. I've never thought of him as clutch or a big play guy, just someone who goes out and plays good quiet solid baseball. Of course, now he's on pace to drive in 288 runs on the back of 64 HR, all of which will come in the 7th inning or later. That works too 8)
  14. Not in the Izzy household. :D I got a mental replay of Bob Euker (sp?) that inning - "Ball 4 ... Ball 8 ... Ball 12 ... Grand slam!!"
  15. Haha. Yeah, I almost exploded when Barrett went yard. Somehow I managed to keep it a simple "Yeah!" in fear of awaking others. You are a man of admirable restraint!
  16. My roommate's lazy great dane, who weighs 165 pounds (I'm about 150) and doesn't even bother getting off the couch when he's barking at the pizza guy, got scared and hid in the bedroom for half an hour following my reaction.
  17. I about punched a hole through the (cathedral) living room ceiling.
  18. There aren't too many things I would NOT give up for a Cubs World Series. Giving up Jordan would be an easy choice.
  19. why would you say a thing like that?
  20. I think that trying to guage focus and mentality of a team is a lot like a booth commentator saying whether or not he agrees with a questionable move on the field, with the whole "if it works he's a genius, if it doesn't, he's an idiot." If the Cubs go on to win it all this year, then yes, they showed up to spring training more focused and more together, and everyone drove that extra mile in preparing for this momentous season. If the Cubs don't win it all this year, then there's no difference between this season's ST and the 98 before it.
  21. While it's true that reveling in '03 conjures up memories of perhaps the most exciting times any living Cubs fan has ever lived through, it always brings with it pain which can only be rivaled by that of a Big Z fastball to the head. Z worhsip. That's the name of the game. Jon's page has a really good picture of the time that Z took down that Columbian drug ring armed only with a superhuman fastball. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/cubbybear314/zzzz-zexplode.jpg
  22. This sounds like as good of an opportunity as any to get Bill Murray onto payroll.
  23. Whenever someone asks Zambrano what time it is, he always says "two seconds til." By the time they're done asking him two seconds til what, he puts a fastball in Edmonds' ribs.
  24. How does that work? A shot for every Ryne Sandberg slam? A beer per Bartmann reference? Participants would be dead by the fourth inning.
  25. You could go to Baseball Reference (the web site I put a link to in my earlier post), click on the Cubs link, then click on each season one by one and compare that season's schedule with the book. Of course, if you have free time to do that one year at a time you really need to get a life. :D If this season turns out much worse than last, then it just might prove to be the colossal time-killer I would need to replace following the Cubs at only a fraction of the blood pressure increase.
