  1. They'll be making that announcement around the second week of March, 6 weeks after the one where they tell us about how his timetable was miscalculated and that late may/early june is more likely.
  2. Pie in the minors playing everyday is better than Pie in the majors to "fill the gap" in RF by being Macias' backup 4 or 5 days out of 7.
  3. That was a great article. I was too depressed to come anywhere near baseball once October started to shape up the way it did, so I am only just now going through the reconstructive steps to recovery, and only now have read this thread. This article looks like it would really hit the spot right now, but stupid chicagosports.com doesn't keep archives around. Anyone who could get me text/a link to this article would be my hero forever. Also, as far as I'm concerned, the Cubs have just as good of a chance as anyone in '06. They just need Prior/Wood to be something they have a little trouble with - healthy and good. They also need people to step up and play out of their minds. And they need a manager to recognize this and foster it, rather than getting Neifi 250 AB in an effort to "keep the bench fresh." Okay I take it back, we have no chance. I give up. Link please??
  4. Competitive bowling is more of a mind game than anything else. Like golf, you are your own worst enemy. How anyone else does has no effect on how well you do. It's mental, and it's coordination, as opposed to physical dominance (though sometimes it's the latter as well, if you've ever watched Robert Smith bowl), but it is still a sport. The fact that more Americans participate in this sport than any other definitely takes away from its novelty, but that doesn't remove the label of sport altogether.
  5. Something to mention about the Colts is that their defense is competing with the Steelers for tops in the AFC. They're solid all around, and I don't think resting Manning, Harrison, etc will automatically spell defeat for them. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them play a full quarter or two in their lame duck games at the end of the season. I think Cincy and Seattle pose moderate threats to them, but I think it will happen.
  6. The poster pointing out that no one stands out right now was right. The Giants were any one of three field goals away from turning the NFC into a 5-way tie. There are plenty of teams with great strengths, and they all have their weaknesses. The reason I went with the Bears is because the Ravens proved a few years ago that a pitiful offense isn't a terrible weakness when you're defense ranks among the top ten pro football has ever seen, and that's where the Bears are sitting right now. Teams like Atlanta are one critical injury (Vick) away from falling into the middle of the pack (assuming the pack isn't the group with 7 or more wins). While the case could possibly be made that the same holds true for the Bears and Urlacher, a defense can't possibly be as good as this one unless it's a full team production. Urlacher's numbers were under the radar for shutting down Tampa and Carolina the last two weeks. The Bears offense doesn't need to be that much better than they are now to make this team the favorite to appear in the super bowl. What I really want to see is how the Bears defense matches up against Indy in Detroit. I also picked the Bears because the Cubs weren't an option.
  7. I'm related to Fred Hornkohl.
  8. Patience (or at least a good discerning eye) at the plate, throwing strikes/locating a fastball, defense, hitting the cutoff man, defense, advancing runners -- these all fall neatly into a category called fundamentals, and the collective inability to master all of these concepts has directly resulted in the Cubs being a group of pretty talented players (at most positions) but a very bad team.
  9. Definite props are in order for Houston, and congrats to their fans. They were nothing short of pitiful and pathetic after six or eight weeks, and they have not let up since. Here's to the first time I'm hoping to see Houston come out of Chicago a winner.
  10. i would have been very interested to see how that whole thing would have played out. I think I would have a little trouble with the decision if it were reversed and the Cubs were in the series, but it wouldn't take me very long to decide to find the Sox gear and head to Wrigley.
  11. Thank you! I was wondering if I was the only one who could have given two sh*ts about the Sox in 2003. I was concerned with what might happen in the Series or how it would feel if the Cubs actually did pull it off. I don't remember how long the thread was, but I believe it ran up past ten pages of things people were willing to do if it meant ensuring the Cubs win the WS. If you go over to WSI (I haven't, because just thinking about it makes me want to pack an arsenal and climb a bell tower), I can guarantee you that there are four threads about the Cubs on the front page.
  12. The Sox have been killing their opponents from day 1, and they have more than earned their way here - no fluke about it. I also think they will have a harder time with the Astros (I know better than to take a 3-1 LCS lead to the bank, I'm just hoping..) than most people believe, but I still have trouble seeing anyone stopping the tear they've been on. That said, I can't offer my congrats. By the time the WS is over, I'll be too apathetic, so maybe afterward, but not now. They have to win it first. I'll do the next best thing and adopt the Sox mentality and turn their success into something negative as it pertains to the Cubs. I'm really hating life as a Cubs fan. I didn't think there could be a lower point to the year than the absolutely pitiful and embarrassing experience in Atlanta, but I think we've found it. There have been a couple references in this thread to "Stupid Alex Gonzalez." That's because that inning (and losing that series) was the only point in the last 20 years when it sucked worse to be a Cubs fan than it does right now. Go Astros.
  13. I believe in destiny too. I believe the first 97 years of this lousy destiny are going to be exactly like the next 97. My lifespan will be mercifully shorter than that timespan, thank God.
  14. better question: if the cubs were in the exact same situation as the cards were in the 9th (runner on 3rd with no out and with one out), how many times do you think they would have hit into that exact same double play? Actually, I give the Cubs a little less credit. I think they would have hit a line drive 1-hopper to 2b, with the relay throw beating the runner by 9 or 10 steps.
  15. It's looking better, but Houston still has six more games to win before I'm going to start being confident. Here's hoping! If houston wins six more games, i will be very confident in their chances to take the World Series. very confident, indeed. 1 down, 5 to go \:D/ \:D/
  16. WHAT A DP!!! STROS UP 3-1!!
  17. Walker's heads up almost makes up for it. If the Cards score, Walker single-handedly prolonged this game.
  18. WOOHOO!!! Why would you run home on that play?!?!
  19. Sanders just went golfing for strike two
  20. 1st and 3rd, none out. Good AB by Walker. There have been some good games this series, despite the shoddy umpire bug that has been going around the league this week.
  21. he went around, but i think commentators were right - it was a called strike, not a swinging strike. Usually the ump will point at the batter on a swing and a miss.
  22. now a pinch hitter enters with full count and two out
  23. After that 3-1 to Edmonds, I don't think the Cards are just being whiney - I think they have legitimate beef with the K zone.
