  1. The initial PECOTA forecats put the Cubs at 77 wins on the year http://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/dc/
  2. So if you trade for Chisendall, do you just DFA Ian Stewart?
  3. Being right around .500 isn't something to be terribly excited about. Being projected to be right around .500 is something it's reasonable to be excited about though. A team that's projected right around .500 can definitely be a playoff team if things break right.
  4. If the packers lose and the niners win, the packers drop from 2 seed to 3 seed, so they do have an incentive to try.
  5. As of today, is there anyone on the roster that could credibly backup 1b?
  6. They weren't going to get Navarro for 750k. If he is the backup catcher they really wanted and they see something to owning him that benefits castillo long term, so be it. I don't see why league minimum for a backup catcher is always the smart play when your backup catcher sees so much time.
  7. Paired with someone from the Marcum/McCarthy/Jackson tier and maybe a bargain bin flier (Stauffer?) for depth this'd be a solid add.

    2013

I'll play. Brian Schneider for the LH catcher? Otherwise you just roll the dice on Clevenger filling the role. Can Ty Wigginton play any 2B a little and fill the role of Valbuena's platoon partner? Probably too awful defensively. I think that Baker guy is available. CF is especially tricky if they legitimately still think Jackson is the guy in another year. Pagan or Victorino might be options, but I kind of expect DeJesus to be there on opening day. Yeah that's not a lot ot work with on the platoon route unless they achieve a lot of it via trade.
  9. Because Brett should know better. Brett's site is Bleacher Nation, not Bleacher Report.
  10. Agreed. I think at some point you have to prove you are willing to take one to arbitration or else players will keep upping their asking prices higher and higher to recive a more favorable midpoint settlement. I'd also say that if Theo/Jed are willing to take this to arbitration it probably further increases the odds that Garza will in fact be dealt rather than extended.
  11. A few other thoughts/questions if the Cubs do decide to bring in another 2B. I know I've read that the Pads were interested in moving Hudson, and Hoyer did sign him after all, so I wouldn't be shocked to see something happen there as part of a larger deal if we aren't done swapping with Byrnes. Was it Espinosa the Nationals were rumored to have soured on last year, or was it Desmond? Has it been decided that Eric Young Jr. is not a 2B? I know he played there some his first year up. Nishioka might provide a solid buy low opportunity in the mold of many of the moves Theo and Hoyer have made this offseason.
  12. I had assumed, like many, that the Cubs would have to move Garza in order to pull off a trade for Rizzo. I wonder if being able to do it for Cashner makes an extension rather than a trade for Garza more likely?
  13. There are enough stone age GMs left that a guy with a .309/.348/.467 line with a good clubhouse rep will almost certainly cost more than 1M. Especially considering how early in the offseason he signed. So all this gnashing of teeth with no idea what the deal is? Didn't he sign a minor league with us last year He signed a minor league deal after putting up a 650 OPS. You'll find that none of us care about him signing a minor league deal. You'll also find that he did not sign a minor league deal. If he gets a major league deal that represents a 67% raise, then this is a bad deal. I doubt he got that much money and a major league deal. Time will tell.

  15. I knew Marshall had been great, but I was surprised when I went to fangraphs and saw he was the MLB leader in war for all relievers over the last two seasons.
  16. I keep seeing 1.5 mil tossed around, but has that actually been reported or is it a guess?
  17. Hoyer has publicly stated that Ian Stewart is our starting 3b. I don't expect him to go back on that. . He probably is our starting 3B, as of December 8. It's not like he said Stewart is the future of the franchise or anything.
  18. If you absolutely rule out internal options, the superior move would be waiting as long as possible before settling for something from the scrapheap. So wait and see is the best alternative? Stewart's value isn't likely to go down any time soon. If a better alternative presents itself, internally or externally, Stewart can likely be moved for something similar to what he just cost, couldn't he? I just don't see much to get worked up over here.
  19. For those that hate the move, what is the superior alternative to some combination of Stewart/Baker/DeWitt that you'd prefer at 3B this year? None of the available options are that appetizing to me at the price for which they'd likely come. When viewed through that lense, it seems maybe Stewart is a stopgap with some upside. Maybe we get lucky. If we don't, we still have Baker and DeWitt in house to fall back on. Not an inspiring move, but I just don't see much more that could have been done.
  20. I wonder if the posting of Darvish is what the Cubs were waiting on to pull the trigger on Stewart? By going relatively cheap at 3B, I'd think they go heavy after one of Darvish/Fielder.
  21. If the cost was the same I'd certainly prefer Headley, but I'm surprised that people think acquiring Headley would be anything but very expensive. Brynes is a Theo guy too isn't he? I'd assume he'd value Headley in much the same way our front office would. Stewart on the other hand can be had realtively cheap accoridng to reports and is still young enough to have hope for a breakout. Many people had all but given up on Alex Gordon this time last year, and he was about the same age going into last year that Stewart will be going into this year. Plus, for the 2012 Cubs to compete, they are alomost certainly going to have to find some diamond in the rough type finds. I say roll the dice on Stewart unless the Pads are more willing ot give up Headley than I'd expect.
  22. M.C. Ren, the forgotten member. As I recall he went preachy and Muslim when the rest went on to more successful solo careers. Don't forget DJ Yella
  23. I was just looking at DeWitt and Stewart on fangraphs and I was surprised to see that Stewart is only 4 months older than DeWitt.
  24. I'm curious how you make that assumption at this point, especially the on base part. Their three best OBP contributors, Fukudome, Ramirez and Pena, are either gone or very likely to be gone. I would not make that assumption until I see the replacements. I'm less confident that Pena is gone, but regardless of whether he is, I would be shocked if whoever they bring in to man 1B and 3B don't get on base at a solid clip. Throw in the possibility that they could potentially trade any of Soriano, Byrd and Barney and replace them with higher OBP guys and the push for exsiting guys on the roster to play the game more in the new "Cub's Way", and I think it's a reasonable assumption.
  25. Right now the only things I'm fairly confident about holding true with the position players next year is that the Cubs will play better defense and will get on base more. There are about a million ways to get from here to there, so it'll be fun watching Theo and Hoyer's plan to get there.
