  1. here's my question. I read a few blogs and one in particular goes out of their way to point out that the Cubs didn't sign Tejada when they had the chance. now, I know the Cubs had the chance to do so but was CHicago a top-choice for Tejada?
  2. The IF's down there can't be all that great. I wouldn't put a ton of stock into it. Also, is Ronny playing 2B, SS, or a bit of both? Double digits would be a slight exaggeration after 1 more tonight he's at 9 - with a batting line of .360/.399/.504 Cedeno stats link BTW Ronny was 3-4, double, 2 RBI, K tonight (12/21). And he has played SS exclusively. Errors don't tell the complete story either. I'm just glad to see his walks increasing.
  3. Next year Wood and Maddux will be off the books...a total of 21M not including buy-outs. THat's basically Zito's salary plus left-over money to put towards Prior/Zambrano. I know Prior will probably file for arbitration but I wonder if maybe he and his agent would be willing to just change the current contract so that it is just fora few more million per year. That would help us regulate prior's money the next few years instead of going to arbitration each year as we will have to do with Zambrano since he is a Boras client.
  4. The Cubs have been looking at Jones for about a year. I began writing about it early in the winter meetings when it became apparent they were hitting a roadblock in trading for a right fielder. If something bigger is at work, it'll be for an infielder or a starting pitcher. I recall that now. I guess I was just hoping that I didn't have to take Jones as a legitimate answer. But I do recall it being written that Sarge was quoted as saying he really hoped the Cubs got Jones because he could really catch the ball... Here's to Tejada! May he bring happiness to our holiday/New Year's celebration! Thanks again Bruce!! Your articles are bookmarked and always the first read!
  5. They could afford it. He made 1.2m in 2003 with Boston, 4.5 in 2004 and 5.2 in 2005. He was just hitting his prime when they let him go, and instead they decided to spend that money on lesser players. 13 guys on the Twins made more than him the year after he left. Wasn't the concern with Ortiz that he couldn't stay healthy or wasn't hitting for enough power at the time?
  6. Perhaps I am way off-base here but the Jones signing still seems a little unexpected. We didn't hear much about the Cubs interest all off-season except for a tidbit here or there that never really indicated they were after him. It just seems like they just decided to sign him and give up trying to trade for a RF. Something in my instincts tells me that maybe something bigger is at work...perhaps that is just the fear of knowing that this could be our OF. Is it possible they kept fielding offers for other players and kept getting asked for Murton and instead of resisting decided that he is expendable and then went after the FA OF they felt was best suited for the team? Maybe I am just getting way too close to the edge of the ledge.
  7. how many errors does Cedeno have now? It's has to be close to double-digits.
  8. from what I have read it appears as though this was the draft to not have a lot of high-round picks. You can bet the house that the Cubs will take some HS pitcher with huge upside. Especially considering they traded 3 out of the farm system. What pick are we? 11? if only Justin Upton wouldn't sign with the Dbacks and by some miracle fall to the Cubs.
  9. I don't mean to pick here but what evidence do you have that would lead you to believe it could even work out REALLy well? Pass the peace pipe 'cause I need a hit of that!
  10. You know, that is something that's been in the back of my mind for a while, but I haven't really thought much of it. I was convince Jones or something similar would be the RF next year. And I've always doubted Murton and Cedeno will get a chance. I think Hendry will either trade Cedeno in a Tejada deal (which I'm fine with), and therefore keep Murton, or trade Murton in a LF deal, and keep Cedeno. The Cubs love to have depth at the mediocre position. I feel the same way. In all honesty, if Cedeno goes for Tejada or Murton somehow is involved in a Dunn/Abreu deal than I am all for their departure. In fact, if we get any of those 3 players I will be able to live with Jones in the OF.
  11. I'm hoping that jones was signed due to an imminent trade for Tejada or dunn or Manny or any player that would be a significant upgrade over a current Cub position player. Anyone else severly depressed today? I didn't have one drink last night and yet I feel hungover.
  12. WHAT?!? Williams is at least as valuable as Lidge? Please, let's hear this argument... Williams(or other SP) is going to pitch 3 times as many innings as Lidge will in a given season. Therefore, even though his performance isn't as dominant as Lidge's, he's worth more to the team because the quantity outweighs the marginal difference in quality. probably only twice as many, but your point is well taken. williams is a quality starter. The question is, do GMs think this way? While we can all agree that Williams over the course of baseball season is more valuable I am not quite certain that GMs feel that way.
  13. I think Hendry wants to sign a Weaver or Millwood. The reason I say that is because as of next year Prior and Zambrano are the only known definites unless you consider Rusch part of the mix. If we have trade Williams or Hill or both for a big bat then we are even in worse shape pitching-wise unless we can count on Guzman/Marshall/Ryu to fill a spot. That might also be why we haven't seen a trade for a big-time bat yet, because Hendry may not be willing to deal Williams or Hill with impending lack of pitching depth. Of course Wood could always become healthy again and be re-signed. Those are just my random, incoherent thoughts. Were either Weaver or Millwood offered arbitration? I believe both were and Weaver declined his. Hendry may be after a pitcher in a trade as well....perhaps using Walker as bait.

  15. So what happens if Kolb doesn't agree to be non-tendered to re-sign at a lower price? Do the Brewers then just suck it up and pay him more? Freel would be a really good pickup I think.
  16. I wonder if Tampa could somehow become part of a 3-way deal with Philly. Huff along with Williams/Hill to Philly, Bell/Cubs prospects to Tampa, and Abreu to the Cubs. Just thinking off the cuff. Either way I'd go for Huff in a second for Guzman/Welly. But if we have to throw in Hill I would think we'd be getting another player in addition to Huff. Say maybe, Lugo. I know a lot are agaisnt acquiring Lugo but it is his contract year and that seems to get guys motivated for a big year.
  17. Not sure if this has been posted but found this via mlb.scout.com. http://diamondbacks.scout.com/2/478484.html Towards the bottom it mentions that Shawn Green will be traded soon and probably to the Cubs. Now I know this has been gone over ad-nausem, but just wanted to point to another source that seems to believe he will accept a trade to somewhere other than the 3 West Coast teams he outlined. So pretend this is to happen. Thoughts/feelings? Myself, I like this better than anything else I have been hearing for RF. This would be even better if it means we'll still have enough prospects to potentially get Tejada.
  18. the way I see it. Hendry might overplay his here but it sure seems like the longer he waits the more value Jerome Williams and Rich Hill have. Cheap, above-average to average pitching is at a premium and their value can only increase as FA sign.
  19. Ok, do the Sox look at what the Cubs might want and just chase after those guys lately, or what? Tejada, Kotsay... Exactly. I have a sick feeling that Williams is about to make a big move. He's going to trade Garland and get something sweet (Tejada, Abreu, Manny, who knows?) BTW, Blum says the Cubs are going to make some big moves. Believe it or not, he expects the Cubs to add another BP arm. For what it's worth, this guy has "anointed the Cubs Champs for '06." We'll see about that... How much money do the Sox have left to spend? Can they take on another another 10-12M? Just wondering.
  20. I forgot about that! This could work in our favor. It just all seems really perfect. The Furcal door closed and another, more promising door opens. I just hope the Cubs get to walk through it. Telling myself not to get excited about this...
  21. That's what I'm thinking too. A solid platoon in right would also cover the Cubs in case one of the OF's gets hurt or struggles. I'm wondering if there is a way to get a 3rd team involved...say Tampa Bay, or even Arizona with Javier Vazquez being involved. Although I am not sure if Baltimore was one of the teams he voided as an option. Either way, I agree that having Tejada at SS definitely eases having average OF production.
  22. SoCal contact who told me about the Angels/Cubs rumour last week also said Arizona may be in the mix for Patterson. He posed three scenarios: (1) Patterson for Luis Gonzalez and cash; (2) 3-way deal with Patterson going to AZ, Glaus going to LA and Bradley coming to the Cubs along with prospect movement and cash. (3) 4-way deal with Vazquez going to the Red Sox, Manny going to the Mets, Floyd going to the Cubs, and Corey and prospects going to AZ. Crazy stuff! out of these 3 scenarios isn't Bradley the only one who could actually play RF? WOuld Murton be moved to RF if we acquired Luis Gonzalez or Cliff Floyd? Murton would be a LF platoon partner and 4th OF. so who would the RF be then?

  24. Lowe and Nixon? I KNOW we can match that. Pie + Williams + Welly/other of the million minor league arms we have. Yeah I couldn't believe what I read. Plus Pie/Williams/Welly are going to be cheaper for a few more years thus freeing up money for an additional pitcher for the Phils. Was it just me or did the RedSox really upgrade their OF in such a deal?
