  1. Jerry Hairston's not bad and Walker isnt Cubs garbage. Jerry Hairston is a backup who can't stay healthy a whole season and the only place Walker has value is on this board. Walker has played in 129 and 110 games the past 2 years as a Cub. So he hasn't exactly been the epitome of great health. It's not as bad as hairston but claiming he plays most to every game every year isn't completely true.
  2. I thought I read today, either in the Sun-times or Herald or cubs.com, that Walker actually still has soreness in his right knee.
  3. Well the strip where the bars and stuff are bad. the town itself is actually nice and there are good people. But if you ever go again make sure to head to Mulgrew's for Foot-long chili dogs with cheese and onions. It'll smack the hangover right out of you.
  4. Good call, I forgot how, um, salty those girls can be... Although, there is one place that's worse. EAST Dbq, just across the river in Illinois. I can never hear the words River Queen again and think clean, wholesome family thoughts.
  5. All the way from Dubuque though? I'd have kicked them out by Freeport. Kick out da strippers! NEVER! Well, you should never, EVER, get strippers in DBQ. the mere thought of it is making my stomach churn. If you find yourself on a bus with a stripper from Dbq, don't wait for the bus to stop. Jump, and pray you got off in time to avoid the delousing.
  6. Glad to see a fellow Iowan...Dubuque native.... I enjoyed my time on teh roof-top. it definitely doesn't beat the ballpark but it's fun because you have more room to roam around and you are with just whom you know. that and it's usually around 100 bucks so you get your money worth in beer and food as compared to spending that much on beer and tickets alone at Wrigley.
  7. You are so wrong. Getting on base is essential to scoring runs. Why don't you check Soriano's road stats as well. And the fact that Murton makes $9 million less than Soriano does matter. RBIs are not a real stat. So Soriano at 30 HRs and a .250 average and no walks makes him worse than Burnitz offensively and terrrible defensively. Soriano would be a disaster. Don't be bamboozled by meaningless numbers. How was Texas 15th in obp and 3rd in runs?? I don't know, maybe, just maybe, it was because they led the world in slugging percentage, the second of the two big stats, and maybe playing in a really cosy hitter's park also helped, and maybe you're just not going to get a completely perfect correlation when the sample size is just one year. it might also be a good idea to figure out how many runs were scored at home compared to on the road.
  8. You are kidding about Ibanez and Floyd, right? Soriano for Tejada?? 8)
  9. I think I started a thread maybe a week ago with an good article about the possible contraction of the Twins. Yeah, totally missed that thread. Sorry about that. I was also wrong in that the media does seem to know about it, at least some in the media. Hopefully we'll start to hear more about this issue. It could have a huge impact on 2007.
  10. Not sure if a post exists to discuss this but at The Cub Reporter there is an article about the owners having a 3-month window from April 1st thru July 1st to contract 2 teams without the MLBPA. You can read it here: http://www.all-baseball.com/cubreporter/archives/021825.html Very interesting stuff and somewhat surprising in that the media hasn't picked this up yet. April 1st is right around the corner. The Nats have no funding and the Marlins just had a huge fire-sale while talking to the remaining large markets that exist without a MLB team.
  11. Because Sosa was so bad for the Cubs. Yeah, especially those 3 years where he hit 60+ HR per year. Who needs a guy like that on the team? The Nationals. yeah, it's just too bad they are getting the "lesser" version of sammy...if he even goes there. He's still mulling that offer for some reason.
  12. Because Sosa was so bad for the Cubs. Yeah, especially those 3 years where he hit 60+ HR per year. Who needs a guy like that on the team?
  13. It's not worth it? What's not worth it? I'd give up alot to get Dunn. With a broken hand he put up a .540 slg last year. He has a great obp, would fit the bill of a left handed power hitter that Hendry wanted. His only real downside is his defense (I think. I can't remember, actually.) Does he K alot? Yes, but I think his ability to be great at other facets of the game makes up for that by a wide margin. He can play the OF and back up Lee if necessary. His only real negative is his defense but I don't believe it's much less of a hinderance than Murtons. Besides, his offensive production far outweighs his defense liability. Wasn't there an article recently on hardballtimes or BP or somewhere that indicated Dunn's low BA was actually due to bad luck with BABIP? Dunn is also only 2 years older than Murton as he just turned 26 in Nov. Dunn is exactly what this team needs.
  14. Yeah, he posted part of an article that he wrote that was a transcript of an interview he had with Hughes. Hughes said that OBP was one of the first stats he looked at when evaluating talent. I can't remember the exact phrasing but he went expanded on what outside factors he looks at to evaluate if the player had the additional "tools" necessary to be a MLB player.
  15. Did Morris start right out of the gate last year or did he take until mid-April? My guess is that Wood is on a similar projection.
  16. Hey, don't knock yourself, sometimes silly speculation is the beginnings of a good rumor, which can then ultimately lead to reality. In the age of the internet and sabermetrics, in my opinion the knowledge gap between a real GM and a die-hard student of the game (in terms of understanding player development, player projection and finances) has dwindled down. In all sincerity, I think there are at least 50 people on this site alone, who could make decent GMs. As for new rumors, nothing new than what is already being discussed. I do get the sense that Jerome Williams is not in the club's plans, and therefore believe he will be traded at some point. I think the Cubs question his mental toughness as well as durability. I think the Wade Miller signing tells us more about how Hendry feels Rich Hill can contribute more than it does about Kerry's health. I still think Williams, Hill and Todd Walker will be dealt (either together or separate deals) to acquire bats. I wonder about what type of bat is he looking to get. Does he want to get a bigger bat for the OF or 2nd base? Realistically speaking, what type of bat could those 3 bring in?
  17. so we have 7 starters. I'd definitely say one of Hill or Williams is going to be shipped out before ST.
  18. Isn't a 1.17WHIP low for a guy with a 4+ ERA? Other than his HR/9 rate every other stat seems fairly decent. He doesn't strike a lot of guys out but he doesn't walk them either, at least not last year.
  19. Hoops, you seem to be alluding to Walker deal soon. If/when that happens are the Cubs going to make a trade for a guy like Lugo or are they going to give hairston a shot?
  20. Anyone here have access to or use certain formula's to calculate the values for Baseball players for an auction draft?
  21. Isn't Lugo in a contract year? I think he'd definitely be worth having as a SS/2B. Having a very motivated Lugo could only stand to benefit this team. Especially at a very reasonable price. The defense up the middle of a Lugo/Cedeno combo could be one of the best in the league. Granted he doesn't have the power of Walker but Lugo still provides a good OBP combined with some speed and good success rate in SB. It will also allow Cedeno to be in the lower part of the order where there will be less pressure to perform. If we got Huff in the deal I think that would definitely signal Murton being trade bait....possibly Zito.
  22. Looks like Marte would net Lugo, I was under the impression that wasn't enough... I believe there was a story that had a quote from the Tampa GM stating that had Marte been offered for Lugo they would have jumped on it. He was basically saying that the reported 3-way with Boston and Atlanta was false.
  23. no idea what the cubs are thinking at this point but I'm hoping that Hairston starts if Walker is traded. He has a decent OBP, especially considering he was learning a new league. Anyone know how good his range or overall defense is at 2B?
  24. Not sure how these are calculated but according to the Commisioners office the Cubs payroll was a grand total of 76M. Can someone shed some light on how exactly that small total was calculated??? http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5227436
