  1. Thanks Mathew , very kind of you . You are a good man , in addition to being a gifted writer . I continue to anticipate your pieces , like I did the sporting news , when I was a boy .
  2. As we celebrate the birth today of a daughter we lost , I realize reading this piece , I realize the source of our sometimes differing world views , while sharing in a common grief . I find you an author who first follows the numbers . Life can and does miraculously leap outside them . Forgiveness , the right to put aside ( literally ) , the hurt done to us , is an example. I think even within your chosen style ( I like following data , while leaving open the opportunity for change ) , you provide some informative context . PCA has a style much more reminiscent of a Jackie Robinson than a Brandon Nimmo . That style drove me to want to be an NFL WR when I was in HS . Flamboyant, joyous , Confidence . But your swing percentage analysis , correctly indicates , what could be , a large offensive inhibitor, if not changed . You are a good check on the lens I fan with . Hope can and does renew , in life , as well as this “ MVP machine “ era of PD . In my families 40 plus years at a high level of athletics and academics , data has served us well in this context . I enjoy and benefit from your written endeavors . I feel as if some layers were peeled back today . You have a nice gift I pray we both see life a little more in the margins .
  3. In addition to being a left hand bat with this profile . The final spots are filled with intrigue. What happened to the days , where the fan base , had Jose Macias , as it’s 25 th man whipping boy . lol
  4. The IFA talent and young Rule 4 draft talent is in double figures with high end pieces . The money and effort The franchise has put into infrastructure is the key to becoming a WS threat . Sustainability will have a direct correlation , to the development of this demographic. The Cubs cast both a wide and directed net in IFA . Far East , Cuba , Mexico , Columbia , Panama , Brazil , DR and Venezuela. Volume and large high profile bonus buys .
  5. Well researched , this will enhance my enjoyment , in watching his potential Development curve .
  6. Makes sense as usual . Depth is huge . While not specific to this instance. Counsell spoke of the bottom third of the roster. ,As being one of the differences between the Cubs and Brewers . I believe that gap has been bridged , both in the floor and ceiling . Your coverage of this , as it pertains to most of the non “ regulars “ signings , has brought some clarity, to the piecing together of the roster puzzle .
  7. These long form pieces , are like the chocolate chip cookies that I am not supposed to consume . Much too good to pass up .
  8. Great reference piece , I always appreciate your eye on context . The Tucker contract will be interesting,
  9. Am I a nerd , because I love the detail in the analysis of these off the grid, NRI dudes .
  10. Been a month for myself and my wife health wise . Your writing always peaks my interests and perks me up . Good call initially and even stronger analysis in this piece . As you surmised , this acquisition fits the orgs value based , and infrastructure backed ( Trombo and company ) typology .
  11. Tyler Zombro and the pitching infrastructure. Are keys to These moves . The Run prevention component, , was ahead of the league in 15-16. Over the past 4 plus years .The Cubs” like the Astros in 13-22, have become “ fast followers “ , with large funding for personell ( FO/ T and D and tech , bio med and coaching expenditures , ) with matched funding for facilities and tech . Cubs have bridged gap and would argue Zombro and a couple others Are in the “ bleeding edge “ category. I think Matt Trueblood needs to lend his expert's lens , to a specific piece on how these areas are shaping an ongoing sustainable roster build .
  12. Without Trying to claim victim status . My wife and I have had some health issues we are working through . ( older by the day lol ) Matt Trueblood and his Socratic style , data driven essays , hit , like when I weekly , looked forward to my Sporting News arrival as a youth . it’s not the promise of a perfect solution . But the contextual what if’s , that are so creative and fun I put you above the Athletic , which I enjoy also . Thanks and please keep them coming .
  13. Rich Hill light ? Leaning into a more effective use of pitch’s and pitch mix . Very creative signing mixed with Rea . I believe continual infrastructure hirings, ( zombro ) fits Organizations philosophy of being able to foster sustainability . Quality major league signings are not mutually exclusive . However many forget Dodgers had Turner ,Taylor and Muncy all huge value / development acquisitions, before they spent big . This is a piece that does more than just talk about the player , As you said it gives clues to the direction of the FO.
  14. How much has been spent on this years IFA class . How much is left . What is the penalty for signing Qualifying FA , as it relates to IFA . Hmmm
  15. I have long thought , ( first stimulated by one of your earlier pieces) that the Friars were a solid match . The consolidation of War and roster space makes sense . It will take a strong will On both sides to pull off a transaction of this potential magnitude. Leaning into the pros , of A raised floor and ceiling for the Cubs and better roster balance , against less potential future value , makes for a fascinating quandary . Padres would be perceived as resetting a bit and have less present certainty. Cease and Suarez ? Amaya Wicks Cassie ….
  16. He gets on base . Above average at third and second . When healthy strong base runner and stealer . I agree this is a depth improvement. I appreciate the data specific layout , in these areas . Value in low dollar layout , that keeps flexibility for pitching improvements.
  17. Love this part of the game . I did not know d positioning was such a Brewer strength . Mr Trueblood , how many wins can be added ,through these coaching and development additions . , ( d positioning , base running runs , catcher framing ) .
  18. This is One of my favorite topics and reasons , for following the team. Development of players , providing an environment conducive , to achieving, what you are talking about , This is a clear priority and micro focus of the Cubs Infrastructure expenditures. I believe your argument and for those in the comments are valid . I am biased having started coaching a QB after he played zero minutes on the frosh team . At 5”4 our varsity HC told me I was wasting my efforts . ( I was varsity OC and QB coach ) Two years later and after an amazing amount of targeted drills and a total strength and cond. overhaul . He was given one scholarship offer and 4 years later was the first pick in the NFL draft . I have a ton of personal data to validate , how drastically the development process , can create the “ over performance “ affect. MLB athletes, are further developed, than HS athletes , in many ways , but as the MVP machine and The Swing Kings articulate. This is becoming much more common in MLB , and the Bio Mechanical and Motor learning principles carry over . Motor preference is real thing ( my experience) and they are leaning into it . Sorry for the length . I really just wanted to buttress your theories and examples . I love this platform .
  19. Thanks for the leg work and melding price , with “ pitch mix fit “ . The research and creativity are stellar. Thankful they have options . Allows us “ closet acquisition executives” to GM at home kudos .
  20. , I believe they will broach it during the season , after both parties get a feel for situation as is . I agree with odds , as stated . But I think of things go well , FO will approach him .
  21. I love forward , and creative value thinking . Interesting at the very least . Kicking the tires would be prudent .
