  1. I think it’s safe to say that the NL MVP is Ohtanis to lose.
  2. It also looks like he’s back to chasing and whiffing on high heat, an old habit of his. The lack of pop from the top of the order is obviously the key to this slump. Has the wind blowing in at Wrigley has gotten to their heads, causing a spike in ground ball% playing a role in their slump? When your homers are getting knocked down by the wind and ending up in gloves I’d think it’d have some effect on hitters mentally causing them to subconsciously tweak their swing path a bit. But I’ll leave this to you, I’m just spit balling.
  3. I’m not here to argue, just to learn. My previous knowledge of this is from sports reference where they use simple ranking system, it’s basically judging how good a team is by quantifying run differential and strength of schedule without the win loss component, in the off you chance you’re not familiar with it. The eye test said the Eagles were a better team than the Packers while the Packers SRS had their average MOV vs a 0 SRS by over a point, thanks to close losses vs playoff teams and running up the score vs scrub opponents. So it’s measuring the sum of a seasons and more situation based than rewarding lopsided wins or losses in isolation, if that makes sense in regards to how fWAR is calculated. Either way the gist of it seems to be telling what we already know that the Jays have good players and are a very good team. I’m only splitting hairs over this because I want to know exactly how it’s calculated. wRC+ is easier to grasp now that I know how wOBA is calculated and how each specific outcome at the plate is weighed exponentially. Whats your diagnosis of PCA at the moment?
  4. Can someone explain to me why the Bluejays are the current leader in total fWAR with a +43 run differential? If wins correlate with runs, there’s 10 teams with a better run differential and pythag win%. This is current by the way and not projected. If Someone more knowledgeable can explanation I’d appreciate it.
  5. 60/40 we’ll be scoreboard watching the Reds and Giants in 2 mondays.
  6. If the Cubs can finish this post ASB 21 game gauntlet playing 500 ball vs MLB heavy weights like the Orioles, Royals, Whitesox and the Cardinals, it’s a win in my book.
  7. Bullpen can’t hold a deficit. What else is new. Offense wouldn’t have made it up anyways though
  8. Zero element of surprise either. Theyre just so predictable.
  9. You doomers need to chill. They’ve been on an 81 win pace since June.
  10. Tip your cap to McGreevy, who’s another part of this week long gauntlet of pitchers also consisting of Sugano, Brandon Young and Nick Martinez. When will we catch a break?
  11. Every team has a geography hater venting after a frustrating loss. I’m not ignoring the first 2 months at all, if I did would’ve dismissed PCA and Busch’s ascension. We also know Swanson, Happ, Suzuki and Nico are already established great complementary pieces. Now swap Bellinger and Tauchman with PCA Tucker and throw Busch into the mix and this is a deeper starting 8/9 than the 2016 team minus the bench and especially if Busch and PCA are the 130-150 wRC+ guys they’ve been and they’ll bounce back from this mini slump like Happ Tucker and Seiya have and ot will break out of, since we have seasons worth of data on to make that assumption. The foundation is great. My concern along with every Cubs fan in existence is the pitching staff. If Boyd and now Horton can handle the increased work load and or the Counsell has a plan in place to keep them fresh for October then they’ll be in good shape. The high leverage bullpen arms have been a very pleasant surprise too. I’m not at all a doomer. A bit reactionary, that’s what being a Chicago sports fan does your head. That’s my positive spin.
  12. All 899 comments have been pessimistic? Is asking this question also pessimistic?
  13. 2017 dodgers 52-9 stretch in 2017 I can’t imagine any team tops that historically, at least post integration.in a 61 games span. Cubs 49-19 stretch from late July 2015-game 4 of the LCS has to their modern era high mark. The Rockies 30-84 record with a -316 run differential through 114 games is the real history being made.
  14. I really hope Horton can handle the increased workload. He’s the only 4 I have any faith in starting a playoff game.
  15. You can put Gonzalez at number 1 for botching a double play, Alou’s overreaction throwing off Priors concentration and momentum, Dusty for leaving Prior in too long, all have an argument.
  16. 03 I remember. It was Bartman’s fault that they lost though and had nothing to do with choking.
  17. Where do you get absurd pessimism from exactly? If that’s the case then people have wasted an entire week complaining about trading for Soroka when they needed much better, which is the biggest flaw on the team with a 113 game sample size to draw from. Kind of important in the playoffs. Playoffs are a crapshoot shoot. The odds are what makes or breaks my confidence. When the offense breaks out their slump, rotation and pen stay afloat and they pass the eye test after this 2 month long stretch of painful mediocrity then all will be well in my mind again. Hopefully the wait won’t be too Much longer. Pointing out flaws isn’t saying the Cubs will miss the playoffs by 5 games in a thread where people are venting over a garbage loss.
  18. Padres, Phillies, Dodgers and whatever the hell you want to make of Milwaukee. Forget the Mets then. If you’re trying to convince me that the cubs have a chance at winning the World Series I’ll buy it, if you’re telling me the odds are on par with with some of the other teams with majors questions around the pitching staff and whether the offense can get red hot at the right time to offset these potential cracks in the roster then I can’t say I like those odds at the moments.
  19. All the above teams you listed minus the Tigers and the Yankees who I don’t think are that good have track records of success in the regular season and playoffs over the last 4+ years. The sample size is big enough to give them a pass for regular season hiccups. Because I watch this team naturally I’ll focus on their flaws because I’m aware of them and what the implications of them will have in a best of playoff series. It goes for every fan base. if they were in a heater I’d be focusing more on the positives. That’s human nature. But you’re talking about a rotation with 2 arms in Boyd and Horton who will have the highest work load of their careers and Jameson Taillon as your number 3 starter. Leaving everything else out of the equation that’s my main concern. Who in that bullpen can hold a deficit at the moment?
