Hardaway has done a lot to try and turn things around. How much of it is purely PR is unknown, but I know he's done something with the Trevor Project. Hardaway wasn't exactly ambiguous: Not a lot of wiggle room for semantics there.
Pat Hughes is telling Billy Corgan how much he loves Pink Floyd and Dark Side of the Moon. Did not see that coming. That's like Vin Scully randomly mentioning how much he loved the Wu-Tang Clan.
nice to see him pitch well, because he sucked last year, and a lot of our far east pitching signees have been flops. That transition cannot be free of severe culture shock.
Overwork and abuse in his youth and a cascade of injuries. I'd stay away unless we need someone to perform towel drills in AAA. Our trainers have their hands full enough as it is.
There are two main options: 1) The housecleaning begins before the trade deadline. There was over 125 people online during the first Cubs pick of the draft. Plenty of people are interested in the future. A rebuilding process will get people buzzing again and wanting to claim they cared again "from the ground floor." 2) This starts a decadelong rebuilding effort that fizzles out every two or three years. It's hard for the Cubs to turn into Pittsburgh or Kansas City with the resources at their disposal. Interest will pick back up. These things are cyclical. The fact that it is currently so apparent means that the downswing is near an end.
Vitters strikes me as a 3B Markakis. Solid but not a superstar. Let's hope he has a BABIP fueled year ahead of him. Failing that, we could try him as a lefty pitcher.
The only good news is that the Cubs had a solid draft so far. Dunston Jr. will be an impossible sign. If we sign Gretzky Jr., cool. If we sign Maples then the Cubs climb into the Pirates/Nationals echelon.
Word on the street is that Baez faced excellent competition in Florida. I'm of the mindset that making the majors with a high draft pick is a coup. Corey Patterson clearly underperformed but he has been un[expletive]ty this summer.
Baez was arguably the best hitter in the draft if Rendon's injury scares you off. There will be plenty of pitching in the next 49 rounds. A lot of these college pitchers are being overvalued and the college hitters are being undervalued. A high school bat is a great pick while we wait to see how the new bats impact older draftees.
Who else is out there worth spending big on? Maybe Bell? Bell sent a letter to all the teams pleading not to draft him because he's going to school. Asking for a $30 million bonus is negotiating. Telling teams not to bother until 2014 is not.
