  1. Maybe he spent the 72 hours with his family to clear his head before embarking on the make or break chapter of his career. No, no, dude's a sissy.
  2. I still think that the Pirates are going to have a surprising season. Not that they'll take the central mind you, but a .500 season is not out of the realm of possibility. I hope they can do it. I also hope I can get up to Indianapolis to see Sharpless throw once this month before he heads to Pittsburgh.
  3. I'd think that if he were going to take a five year deal with the Cubs anyway he must really really want to stay with the team. Fact is, he and his agent have stated that the negotiating window has been extended indefinitely. If it were just for a week they would have said a week. So for some reason they've went from really worrying about it a week or two ago to a total "what, me worry?" mindset. SOMETHING has to have gone on to cause that. Nevermind that we probably aren't talking months here. McDonough and Hendry should be able to get things figured out payroll wise in the next few weeks, I'd hope. A good compromise may be to not change his 2007 salary, and tack on any bump he was going to get to the later years. Might hurt us a little when he makes 20 million one season, but it might let the Tribune sign the deal if they're not taking on any additional debt. What do they care about 2008 and beyond, they've already said they'll sell and nobody in their right mind is going to not want Carlos Zambrano.
  4. Translation, they've agreed to a deal but can't sign it until given the ok. Nobody has anything to lose by just chilling out and waiting. Zambrano has a deal he's comfortable with waiting, and even if it fell through he just gets his big Free Agency payday. So i'd imagine...
  5. One in the same. Small world!
  6. Thing is, Zito getting 7 years and 126 million dollars doesn't set that as the market for Zambrano, it just means that the San Fransisco Giants ownership are idiots. In the same way that A-Rod signing a 10 year, 252 million dollar contract didn't set the market for comparable players, it just meant that the Texas Rangers ownership were idiots. If that had of set the market for a player of his caliber, Pujols would have gotten much more than 7/100. It's just as fair to say that Jason Schmidts 3/47 contract, or around 15.7 per year, sets the market for Zambrano, albeit extended to five years. I think 5/85 is incredibly fair to all involved.
  7. Those bills are smiling. Obviously soft...
  8. You just know we're all bored and waiting for real baseball to start next week when we fight for 7 pages over "I'm an employee"...
  9. Big Murt can cover it, it would seem. :D
  10. Perfect. We don't have to commit to Zito years, and he gets a bigger deal than Oswalt coming out of arbitration years.
  11. Trust me, if the time comes to eat a heaping helping of Izturis crow, nobody is going to be happier to eat up than me...
  12. Umpire - Mr Piniella, my face is up here!
  13. It's going to be a long season, no reason to give up yet. Prior was greatly improved last time out and his problems appear to be velocity and control, not injury. The fastball will come as he pitches more. Wood, of course, is the great unknown. He looked great to start spring training, came into camp in great shape. Maybe he was just overdoing it trying to prove he could pitch. Maybe he worked too hard in the offseason. I'm not sure. Fact is, though, we're going to have pitchers go down either to injury or suck, and we're going to need replacements. There is no reason not to hope that Mark Prior can spend a few weeks building up arm strength and come pitch for us. As for Wood, I just hope he makes it back at all...
  14. Agreed, which is why I'm happy with Miller winning the 5th spot. Or, better yet, Marquis pitches great, so does Miller, and Prior is just forcing the issue in extended spring training and/or Iowa, that we have every team in baseball just begging us for the odd man out. :D **keeps sipping the kool-aid**
  15. Releasing Wood now would be the stupidest move ever in the history of stupid moves. We're already on the hook for the contract. Even if we weren't, if it were a Todd Walker situation where we could get out by releasing him...it's just one and a half million dollars. That's half a Hank Blanco. Do you really release him and take the chance of him reemerging a Cardinal for half a Hank Blanco? I think not... Keep him in extended spring training, rehab him like the hundred other hurt players in baseball, and see what happens. If he can't come back, no harm no foul. We paid Wade Miller as much for 5 games last year, and then resigned him. I don't think we're wasting anything by just giving Woody a chance.
  16. Is it really? I tend to agree with the World Anti-Doping Agency on this point that believing you are taking something that will enhance your performance is "clearly contradictory to the spirit of sport" which would make it cheating. It might be that they aren't actually helping themselves but by doing something they believe will give them an (unfair) advantage they tainting the sport. Maybe "level playing field" is a better term than "clean", but what I was getting at is if HGH is basically useless to them, and if there aren't any designer untestable drugs we haven't heard about, then players don't really have any available means to artificially enhance themselves IF we can trust that the testing is catching most of the cheaters of typical anabolic steroids.
  17. I think, in the longrun, HGH is probably more useful to someone such as a pro wrestler, who is going for the look of a muscle head without the work, not so much the actual strength. This is great though, because if HGH is the only thing they can't really test for and it's of little help, then that means the game is relatively clean at this point. Until the next designer drug comes along. However, I would LOVE for an HGH test to go into effect and better yet (though impossible) the players not even be told, so that all the stupid HGH users could be caught and laughed at. Not only are you harming your body, not only are you cheating...you're doing it for nothing!
  18. Who's avatar? http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f189/kctigers23/studio11.jpg is that sasha cohen? yes I'd hit it. With or without skates? With skates, but make them roller skates. I'd rather worry about getting bonked in the head with wheels than getting an accidental beheading. :D
  19. Obviously the velocity is coming. He's gained a good 5 MPH on his fastball already. If they're really wanting Angel to start at AAA and it's either Miller or Prior, I'd give the nod to Mark. I'll take a question mark over sure thing suck.
  20. Gotta love some other team having a huge distraction for once. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but he'll no doubt miss a little time on court dates and any ordered treatment. Sure won't help the Cards.
  21. It just speaks volumes about the new staffs approach. Leave this up to Dusty Baker and he'd be talking about Tomas Perez...
  22. I think it works out for both parties. McCann gets the big lump of guaranteed money, Atlanta gets a perceived bargain, and when it's up he'll still be young enough to get a big juicy free agent contract. Sure, he could have waited a year and got a little more out of them, but he could also blow his knee out or something and wind up with nothing. I'm a fan of the sure bet...
  23. QFT And a lot of bottles of Jack from pockets will be appearing
  24. With Wade Miller and Jason Marquis in your rotation, you're going to have a number of games where they go out after a handful of innings. A longman will be essential there to keep the bullpen from being abused. Guzman could play that role very well. Hopefully it would help keep his innings manageable for the year, and if one of Miller or Marquis falter, hopefully Lou has a short leash.
  25. Ask them what size it is, 2X or more and I'll buy.
