Mervis has had a good eye for sure this ST. He looks a tad frustrated the last couple of games.

Seems like PCA may have an issue with velocity, especially up in the zone. Makes sense given his golf-like swing. He seems to be behind on fastballs a lot, including during his short stint last year in MLB. Statcast says he saw 51 fastballs in the MLB last year and had a whiff % of 52% on those fastballs. To compare, Wisdom's biggest whiff% pitches last year was breaking balls at 43%. PCA says he's been working on getting to pitches up over the winter. I think he definitely needs some AAA time to work on it.

38 players on the Cubs bench today. Doesn't include bullpen.

Everyone but Steele is a question mark in the rotation IMO. I'm not that big on Wicks either until he finds a fastball that hitters won't crush. Maybe he starts using his sinker a lot more. His 4-seamer was terrible last year. But he's solid as a #5.

His K's should improve if they decide to turn him into a reliever, so don't mind the trade at all.

Wisdom isn't good defensively, he doesn't have a lot of value at 3b. Can't see Morel doing much worse than Wisdom did defensively. Mastrobuoni might even be ahead in the depth charts over Wisdom at 3B. At this point Wisdom is mostly a 1B/DH platoon option vs LHP. How many teams would grab him off waivers at 2.75m?

Busch is also an option at 3B if all else fails, plus Mastrobuoni and some other guys who will be in Iowa. If Wisdom plays 3B for any extended period of time this year something has gone horribly wrong.

My best guesses are Wisdom, Thompson, Hodge, or Horn. Or trade. Kilian is a possibility too I guess.

It's possible even Jed offered more than 80m guaranteed with more years and lower AAV but Cody wanted the opt-outs with high AAV, who knows.

Hard to say what they do with the 40 man for Bellinger. It's possible Cooper replaces Wisdom and Wisdom is traded in the next few days. As you say, Wisdom will rarely be used at 3b this season and he and Cooper would have the same role, and Cooper's bat seems better than Wisdom's.

They have to remove someone from the 40 man roster to add Bellinger to it once his signing is official. Using an option doesn't remove that player from the 40-man, just the 26-man.

They could DFA Bailey Horn, Porter Hodge, or maybe Keegan Thompson too. If I were the Cubs I'd keep Wisdom to hit vs LHP at 1B or DH unless they like Cooper better.

Well I don't have a high value of Mervis and i'm also skeptical of his as an MLB regular and always have been. I was against him being on the OD roster last year, but with a year more of experience I see it as a better option than it was last year, but he would platoon at DH at best. At the end of the day whoever makes the cut for that roster spot is going to be last position player on the 26-man. I'm interested to see what they do at DH vs RHP. There's options like Tauchman, Mervis, Canario, Wisdom, Mastrobuoni, maybe Morel. Later they have Dom Smith and Peralta as options too. They probably go with matchups of bench guys unless 1 or 2 guys start to stand out.

Well I think Wisdom is higher on the depth chart than Cooper, given one is a NRI and Wisdom is on the 40. Maybe they try to get Wisdom through waivers, who knows? I'd keep Mervis over Wisdom personally, but we can use Wisdom as a platoon at 1B and DH vs LHP.. I think it's more of a depth move, guess we'll see.

Carter Hawkins previously said they see Busch probably in a platoon at 1B at least to begin. That means a RHB plays 1B vs LHP. Right now that's Wisdom or maybe Morel, but Wisdom has been practicing a lot of 1B so far this Spring next to Busch. Cooper may be a backup for Wisdom in case of injury since there's really no other RHB 1B besides maybe Morel, plus McGeary who isn't quite ready and is defensively more a DH.

He's basically slap hitter with speed who walks a lot, and is versatile defensively. Speedy infield version of Tauchman. He could make the roster but hard to see him getting much playing time without an injury besides pinch-running and/or as a late-inning sub.

Well this could change things. He hits RH though. Wonder if it's a minor league deal (edit: it is a minor league deal)

Not loving Mervis doesn't mean he won't be on the roster though. He'd probably be the last guy chosen for the bench if he made it. I think they like Busch better because he's a better prospect, and they aren't just going to give Mervis a job since they're clearly less sure of him. I think they like Mervis better than Jared Young overall because they decided to DFA Young over Mervis. I think Young got the late season callup last year because he had a much calmer personality that could better handle the pressures of a late-season playoff race. Mervis was clearly frustrated and into his own head during his MLB stint last year. He very well may not make the OD roster, and he might be traded too, but he's also not a bad option to try at DH vs RHP at no risk. Having Happ, Bellinger, Busch, and Mervis all hitting lefty in the lineup vs RHP could turn out pretty decent.

Very doubtful he's on this team OD unless there's an injury though. But he's ok as a backup.

Yeah will be interesting. My guess is a pitcher or a trade.
