  1. He's basically slap hitter with speed who walks a lot, and is versatile defensively. Speedy infield version of Tauchman. He could make the roster but hard to see him getting much playing time without an injury besides pinch-running and/or as a late-inning sub.
  2. Well this could change things. He hits RH though. Wonder if it's a minor league deal (edit: it is a minor league deal)
  3. Not loving Mervis doesn't mean he won't be on the roster though. He'd probably be the last guy chosen for the bench if he made it. I think they like Busch better because he's a better prospect, and they aren't just going to give Mervis a job since they're clearly less sure of him. I think they like Mervis better than Jared Young overall because they decided to DFA Young over Mervis. I think Young got the late season callup last year because he had a much calmer personality that could better handle the pressures of a late-season playoff race. Mervis was clearly frustrated and into his own head during his MLB stint last year. He very well may not make the OD roster, and he might be traded too, but he's also not a bad option to try at DH vs RHP at no risk. Having Happ, Bellinger, Busch, and Mervis all hitting lefty in the lineup vs RHP could turn out pretty decent.
  4. Very doubtful he's on this team OD unless there's an injury though. But he's ok as a backup.
  5. Yeah will be interesting. My guess is a pitcher or a trade.
  6. Unless Mervis looks horrendous this spring I don't see why he couldn't take the job on the OD roster. Even a mediocre spring doesn't mean anything. There's not a lot of other good options at DH vs RHP besides Morel. Any injury makes it more like Mervis is on the roster. Dom Smith won't be ready for OD it sounds like.
  7. Why can't he DH vs RHP? They don't have a lot of power LH bats to DH. Dom Smith, Peralta, Tauchman, Mastrobuoni, not the best group. We don't have a DH
  8. Also got Counsell and Neris.
  9. Better offseason than last year I think.
  10. They don't stand out as a powerhouse team but there's no weakness anywhere and tons of solid depth at every position besides maybe 2nd catcher. They have to be the favorite to win the division at this point.
  11. Gives Cubs the ability to give PCA some more time in AAA if needed, and more depth in case Busch struggles or is hurt. Mervis could make the team as a DH vs RHP, and probably Morel/Canario/Gomes at DH with Madrigal at 3B and Wisdom/Morel at 1B vs LHP. Cody is very likely opting out if he has a good year. He'll make 30m in 2025 but he's not going to leave a big contract on the table next winter for an extra 5-7m.
  12. Yes! Solid deal for both sides, but I'll give this to the Cubs. Even 5/120 would have been solid. Bellinger got opt outs every offseason which is a win for him. We get a guy who will still be very motivated to perform.
  13. Maybe less if he's going from 5 to 4 days rest
  14. I still like him if he can stay healthy.
  15. Lettering is league wide on jerseys.
  16. Mastrobunoni is ripped this spring. Not sure if he was this ripped last year. Brennen Davis looks healthy.
  17. Who we sign this offseason isn't relevant much to the future because players can be traded in the future, whether that's veterans on contracts or prospects. Having too much talent is a great problem for us to have. Trading a vet means we get to reload the farm or trade for a more glaring mlb need. Sitting on that money and not spending it is silly because we're just sitting on assets
  18. PCA is extremely aggressive on the bases. Like the hustle, hopefully it results in more positives than negatives and isn't reckless as he showed a bit last year in mlb. He ran through the stop sign by Willie at 3B today when he scored in the infield grounder.
  19. He's really hard to listen to in interviews because of this. I saw his Game 7 commentary on TV but i just couldn't watch it.
  20. Meh still no out pitch. It's possible the sticky stuff had an effect on him because his curve looked really good in the AFL that fall he went on a tear in the playoffs.
  21. He had 98th percentile sprint speed in MLB last year,
  22. Ricketts cost-cutting. Gotta pay for "Crow-Armstrong" letters.
  23. Jesse Chavez also looking horrible lol. First game though, might not be putting in max effort or rusty...let's hope for his sake.
  24. Let's hope the lens just isn't in focus or something.
  25. If we sign Bellinger and everyone is healthy and doing ok in ST for bench i'd go Amaya, Tauchman, Wisdom, Madrigal, Mervis. Busch at 1B and Mervis is DH vs RHP, Wisdom/Morel at 1B/DH vs LHP and Madrigal plays 3B. Gomes might fit in the mix at DH vs LHP as well. If Bellinger isn't signed and no more offensive moves made then the bench i'd go: Amaya, Wisdom, Madrigal, Canario, Mervis. Platoon Tauchman/Canario in CF, Morel also an option in CF vs LHP.
