I think suggesting PCA, Mervis and Canario all fell on their faces when brought up is a bit harsh. How do you judge PCA on 10AB. Mervis actually hit the ball hard in the majors. He just didn’t find holes. And Canario did well in way fewer AB then he should have had.

You expected Hendricks to be better than what he was? I feel that is very unrealistic expectations. He did very well. If anything I feel he outperformed what most thought he would do. IMO this team would have made the playoffs but for the pen just falling apart. Still wouldn’t have been a great team. But they would have won a few more games down the stretch. Still work to be done for 24’ but if TR and Hoyer believe this team is a playoff team and spend money accordingly I feel they should be better next year.

I would be fine with that. But I doubt Hoyer’s boss would sign off on that move anyway. Hoyer is there because he follows ownerships wishes.

Ohtani makes the most sense. If Stroman comes back and if the Cubs restructure Hendricks they would be passing on a pitcher. So they can spend bigger on a bat. And then when Stroman is gone and probably Hendricks, they have Ohtani healthy to go with Horton. I doubt they spend for Ohtani, but if they don’t sign Bellinger they need to use that money somewhere. They have enough to spend and still not go into rhe LT limit. I would rather they just let Hendricks go and see about signing one of the Japanese pitcher or someone like Jordon Montgomery.

This is what I believe too. Suzuki saved Merryweather from blowing the game. TBH. Ross blew the game. Terribly managed game. Do not understand PCA in the 4th inning. Has he waited he could have put him in after the top of the 8th, or even to pinch run for Ross in the 8th. If he didn’t want Mastrobuoni to face Hand, rather the.n bunt with him, he could have pinch hit Wissom rherr and let PCA try to steal. Two huge mistakes were made. PCA coming in so early and then that stupid bunt. He needs to be fired after this year.

I did. And I did misunderstand you originally. That said, I am not sure Steele still isn’t their best option if he happens to put 2 on in the 6th. A lot depends on the contact made by the hit he gives up, who is up, and if he has labored up until then. I don’t think it is as easy as “take him out” if he happens to get in a jam in the 6th. If we had a working pen like we did in early August (Fulmer, Lieter, Merryweather and Alzolay) I can see going to the pen. But if going to the pen now means going to Cuas, Palencia, Smyly, etc…. I am not sure Steele should be allowed to clean his mess.

If they have a spot secured before Sunday but they are playing for 5th or 6th I wouldn’t use Steele. And if they go 3-2 prior to Sunday they might have a spot locked up. At least I hope they do.

If he is at 74 pitches through 5 while allowing less than 2 runs and the top of the order is coming up in the 6th you want him pulled? Exactly who do you want pitching at that time. I am sure if Ross did this he would be blasted here. Especially if this reliever you want in the game instead of Steele pitches poorly. Your scenario for the 6th is the first sign of trouble. I get moving him then but how do they take him out before that? How are they to know trouble is coming until it comes? To me that is managing scared. He got them here. He has to stay in to face the line up a 3rd time. If he is basically pitching well through 5 he has to stay in. Not like they have this lock down pen.

On the idea of Morel playing one position, at seasons end I would tell Morel he is a 3rd baseman. Get someone to work with him as soon as the season ends and have him strictly play 3rd. If he can he die it I would be fine with a .230 hitter who slugs around .500 at 3rd. He would give the team a legitimate 30+ homer guy. He has the arm for 3rd. He should be able to handle it if it is his only focus.

Can’t disagree with any of this. I am hoping they can get one in Atlanta(they aren’t playing well right now) and then 2 in Milw. They will have clinched.

I think 3-3 gets them in. Pirates and Mets aren’t pushovers. Marlins are under 500 on the road. They can easily lose both of those series. Wish they were in a better spot, but can’t do anything about that.

Wisdom has indeed done well when in spot duty. Yes, Ross does deserve some credit for that.

Terrible idea. 3rd baseman was back. He probably thought he had an easy hit if he got it down. Still, TERRIBLE DECISION.

He did that in his own. No way that was called from the bench. Terrible play.

If the cubs go 4-3 counting today and the Marlins beat them out, they deserve it. They handled Atlanta and the Brewers and hung in there. I know they end with the Mets and Pirates, but both are in the road. And both teams are decent at home. Cubs just need to take care of what they can.

Hopefully Steele won’t need to be used. Then they can go Steele then Stroman.

I have seen comments a few times regarding Nico Hoerner and his up side being basically an average major league hitter. And if you look at his numbers he does grade out right around 100.(average). But my question is does SB ever get put in the equation when determine offensive value. I mean often after he gets a single he ends up stealing second base. He get credit for one total base but that single ends up the same as someone doubling. I realize with guys on base this is different. I am just curious if there is any place that is accounted for when determine a guys offensive value. A stolen base is offensive value. I absolutely believe Nico is a star player at 100/105 offensive value when you factor in base stealing, running the bases and then, of course, his defense.

Who would take 4-3 now for the last 7? Do Marlins go 5-2? I don’t think so. Mets and Pirates both over 500 at home. I also don’t think the Reds go 6-1.

I could see the Yankees beating them. We will be lucky if the Sox win 1. But Houston shoukd need those games so that is good.

At least IF the Brewers don’t come back they will play regulars tomorrow. They won’t have clinched the division. If they do win today I expect a lot of reserves tomorrow.

I am expecting the “Ross is an idiot” commentary now. But the fact is what can he do. It is a flip of the coin as to who he pitches. They all suck as far as consistency.

I don’t think he pitches the 8th. And he didn’t start because he pitched Tuesday. He wasn’t scheduled. Wicks was. Short rest today. Don’t see him going more than what he did already.
