  1. I don’t think you can made a blanket statement like that and prove it to be right. There are so many variables. Sure, hit and run with Morel up is a bad idea. Will often result in a bad stolen base attempt. Hit and run with Madrigal is pretty safe. He at least hits the ball when he swings at it. And if he fouls it off it is no harm either. In that exact scenario, IMO hit and run makes the most sense. Different hitter maybe something different. I just don’t think bunting to bring Morel up was the best choice. And if you are afraid of the double play you run the guys. As I said, very good chance Madrigal makes contact.
  2. Did he get promoted to AAA. According to the Sun Times, he got promoted. We might see him this year.
  3. I don’t like the stealing idea, but I do like getting the runners moving with a hit and run. Madrigal does make contact. In that case if he hits it on the ground not only would the runners move up, but there would be a chance of an actual hit. I rally think the bunt versus swing away is a 50/50 decision that gets criticized if whatever the manager decides, if it doesn’t work. But in this case with Morel up next I would have liked the idea of a hit and run.
  4. I am not arguing that he won’t fail. As you have said often most do. I am saying the decision hasn’t been made yet. 99 AB where he actually had good under the hood numbers but bad results is not enough to banish him. As for your comment that scouts don’t like him, you just said he was behind 3 top 100 prospects. So couldn’t he be 101 to even 150 and still be liked somewhat by scouts. As you said, he could be lower down because 1st baseman are not usually top ranked guys. I think you are deciding way too early in him. That is all I am saying.
  5. While I agree the Cubs should not pencil in Mervis for next year, I disagree with you when you suggest he had his chance and failed so they will move in from him. I think he will be given another chance and I doubt the FO has lost faith in him. I also disagree that he isn’t particularly loved by scouts. He is the 4th ranked first baseman in the minors, right behind Encarnacion-Strand, who the Reds just brought up. I get the Cubs not giving him the job now. But I do think he will be given the chance next spring. And I don’t think he can be considered a bust yet. In the end, you might be right. I just don’t think that has been established yet. I do agree it is 2024 or bust for him. He either makes it or ends up, at best, a journeyman back up like Volgelbach.
  6. Already working with one open spot in the rotation. Stroman really needs to be back to where he was earlier when he comes back. Then go Wesnecki or Assad in Smyly’s spot. Can’t keep putting Smyly out there. But also don’t love Wesnecki AND Assad in the rotation. One is ok, if Stroman is good to go. Both could be a problem. I am also not crazy about the idea of giving the young guys a chance. They aren’t even that good at AAA. If they are doing that, it is a last resort and not a good place to be. Guys like Killian, Brown or anyone else in the minors should not be pitchers you need to count on down the stretch.
  7. We might see a Killian piggyback game today. Smyly then Killian. Pen needs a break.
  8. Same with the division, I assume. Cubs don’t stack up too well with tiebreakers currently.
  9. If the Cubs end in a tie for the 6th spot with the Marlins, do they go to head to head to decide the spot? If so, Marlins win the tiebreaker. As of now Reds also win tor breaker. They have a 5-4 edge in head to head. So cubs need to win 3/4 when they play again. I am pretty sure they do not play a game to break ties.
  10. He wouldn’t come up until AAA season was over. So he wouldn’t be losing valuable AAA time. I think the biggest issue is they would have to commit to him on the 40 man now instead of after spring training next year. I don’t they they will put him on the 40 man until next year. That is why I doubt they being him up.
  11. I agree with you. But, that said, still great to get 1 series with the Braves out of the way and gain 2 games on the Reds and 1 on Milw while they were playing at home against teams they should beat. Cubs need to keep it going. Can’t have a let up. Nice series!
  12. Just going to say it and take heat from others. Madrigal has been pretty damn good. Both defense and with the bat. Better than I expected. He deserves to be in the line up.
  13. I wouldn’t mind seeing Kay, Palancia and Assad sent down. Assad only because he threw a lot of pitches today. They need arms.
  14. It is one game. Does it really matter if they lose 11-0 or 3-2? Has the reds won yesterday would they have cared that they got clobbered two games in a row? Would we have been happy because we crushed them twice and they only beat us by 1 run twice? That would be NO. Braves are very good. The next two are going to be tough. But as was pointed out, the Sox beat them twice. They can lose games. And this one has no extra value in the next two, no matter how baxk we get beat.
  15. I have to think the Cubs plan on giving Wesnecki as many inning as he can pitch. Maybe as many as 70 pitches. So that tells me they will send him down after the game to get a fresh arm. Any ideas whi that could be? Who is up to start either today or tomorrow? Or will they just get a pen arm. They will need someone to piggyback Assad.
  16. Well we have 2 more tries. Hope we get 1 for sure.
  17. Shocking! I have never heard that you want guys to hit early in the count…..
  18. Cubs have 21 games remaining with really bad teams. (Det-3, Sox-2, pirates-7, KC-3, Rockies-6) and really only 6 with a team clearly better than they are, the Braves. And 3 of those will probably be after the Braves clinch. Other than that they are playing teams at their level. I don’t consider the Jays much better than the Cubs. And now they will be without Bichette. Cubs are 6-0 against the Pirates, so they need to continue to dominate them. Love to see 3-1 the remainder of the homestand, but with a win tonight I would even be ok with just taking 1 from the Braves. If they could go 6-4 the next 10 this sets up very nice for them. Even 5-5 would be ok, if one of the wins was tonight.
  19. Where are you seeing that fg projections you sent? I looked and they still show Cubs at 83 wins and brewers winning the division. I know that is not the point you are making. You are showing the remainder of the season strength of schedule. But where is this projection? Also, the difference between a .480 and .500 record for teams on your schedule really isn’t that much difference. I agree the Cubs have an easier schedule but I think it is an overstatement to call it “by far” the softest. That said, if they hold their ground thru next weekend I do like their chances. Need to stay within 3. Like to see the reds go away and leave it to the cubs and brewers. They finish the season against each other so even if the cubs are 3 back they can still pull it out with a sweep. Tie goes to head to head, I believe. And if the Cubs sweep them, I would assume they would own the tiebreaker.
  20. I would rather he just play the entire year at AA and end up crushing it. Then start next year at AAA. He is still very young. Why rush him?
  21. Regardless, Bellinger is not going to sign a. Extension. Maybe not zero chance, but definitely less that 1% chance.
  22. What did Jed say to give you that idea. I didn’t hear an interview with Jed. I highly doubt they extend Bellinger. Maybe they go after him as a free agent, but I would be shocked if he signed before checking out the market. Maybe he does love it here and that will give them a slight advantage. But for the most part it will be about the money.
