  1. So are you for the 9 guys for 8 positions idea if Bellinger doesn’t opt out? Or do you have someone else you would like to trade. I honestly would rather see him opt out, but if he doesn’t, I think the 9 guys for 8 positions can work. And lastly, if he does opt out and they have almost $80M to spend, I agree with whoever mentioned that instead of spreading it around the should spend on 2 big moves. That would be Soto and Burnes/Snell/Fried/Flaherty(I guess). If they aren’t going to use the money they have, plus Bellinger’s money to upgrade both the offense and pitching I would rather he just stays.
  2. I thought there was a report at the deadline that’s team, maybe the Orioles, were concerned with his medicals. Maybe I am wrong. That said, yiu make good points. He is just someone I am not a fan of. Maybe because of all those cardinal years!!! I am sure if they signed him in a 4 year deal I would come around to him. I just refer other options. Like I said, this could just be me talking as a fan.
  3. If the Cubs are going to add a starting pitcher(and they really should) Flaherty wouldn’t be my first choice. I would rather they traded for a young starter, or someone like Castillo or signed someone other than Flaherty. Just not a big fan of his. And doesn’t he have some medicals some teams were afraid of?
  4. I think Busch is also an option. If they wanted to make a big trade to bring in Vlad, I can see Busch dealt. He probably has the most value.
  5. Honestly, the Cubs should make their plans very well known to Bellinger. They should tell him they are going after a big bat and he might see less playing time. Maybe that will sway Bellinger’s decision.
  6. Exactly what I was going to say. In a Perfect scenario everyone gets 20 games off. You can probably live with Busch at 3rd for 20 games if you really wanted too. To fill 8 Positions for 162 games that is 1296 games. 9 guys playing 142 games each is 1278 games. It can be done. And, of course, there will be injuries. Go get Tucker or Vlad and make it happen. I wouldn’t worry about playing time for the young talent. Some will be fine in trade anyway.
  7. But you are minimizing the offensive gain if you trade a guy who is 18th in all of baseball in OPS and replace him with someone who might be better. Suzuki isn’t being traded. It would be a very stupid thing to do. Who do you think they could get to improve the offense over what Suzuki brings?
  8. That is true. If Seattle did want him I guess he and his agent would know it and opt out. Very good point 1908. That said, I still think there is a good chance he opts out anyway, so the trade Bellinger or even trade any of the starters conversation becomes moot. He is actually having a decent year. If he can sell himself as a centerfielder he should be able to get 5/$100-$1110. That should have him opting out.
  9. Guess so. But then the NTC comes in. So not really an option.
  10. If Bellinger comes back does he have trade value? I mean does a team like Seattle, who has a lot of pitching but needs offense, consider him. They seem to have a lot of great young arms. I know they can’t be touched with Bellinger. But what about Castillo. He is 31 and making $23M or so a year for the next 3 years. He had a good year and has been solid, but not “ace” like. What would the Cubs have to add for something like this to happen?
  11. Seiya is more than a “nice player”. He is 18th in all of baseball in OPS. He is a middle of the line up hitter. You don’t trade him to open a spot for someone who might be marginally better. You add to him.
  12. I tend to agree with you in this. But if it is anyone, I would guess it is Bellinger. It’s not going to be Happ or Suzuki. I am fairly certain about that. 10% or less chance they actually trade Bellinger. I think a likelier scenerio is Busch, tbh. He is cheaper and will bring back more. Next possibility is Nico. I am not sure of either of them being traded, as well. I’m just saying IMO from most likely to least it would be NO ONE TRADED, Busch, Nico then Bellinger. .
  13. You don’t trade either of your two best hitters to get better offensively. On top of that, both have NTC in their contract. I also believe trading Suzuki would hurt any goodwill the Cubs have in Japan. Right now they are a preferred destination to those the Dodgers don’t want. I think that may change if they went to Suzuki to ask him to forfeit his NTC so they can trade him after he had such a good season with them and has been a very good ballplayer and teammate since coming over. Maybe I am wrong about that. But I would hate to find out I am not.
  14. Yep. I don’t get it. There are just some posters that stick to a theme and don’t really care if what they believe has little merit. Happened with Happ earlier this year. Happened with Busch several times this year and now Suzuki. I highly doubt Happ or Suzuki is traded. But I am sure it will continue to be discussed, for some reason.
  15. Careful… stick to baseball. Or you will find what else people complain about.😬
  16. Here is where you lose me. If it isn’t a big deal why won’t they go over next year? I agree that they probably shouldn’t have this year, but why does that doom next year, in your estimation? Apparently the penalties do not get that much worse. As I have said before, I do feel it was a miscalculation and at some point during the season it was realized they were over. And I also feel if that isn’t true, and they know before the start of the season, they would be over, I think it was a miss by the FO to not add a little more talent and go closer to the next line. That said, I am not sure why you now know they won’t go over this year.
  17. Don’t teams over the luxury tax lose a second pick if they sign a guy who comes with a QO? If the penalty is only a 5th round pick I completely agree it isn’t a big deal and teams are just making excuses. I thought it was more than that. Or do they lose a 2nd pick if they are into the second tier of penalties. If all you ever lose is more money because the tax goes up and only a 5th pick than the Cubs could be and should be over the first tier every year.
  18. I agree it is a complaint of all fans. I also agree that the Cubs would still be a very average team with automatic balls and strikes. But an umpire making the calls does favor teams who have catchers that rate out as good pitch framers. I am pretty sure that neither Amaya nor Beathencourt rate favorably. That doesn’t excuse the Cubs record. But as thawv said, he just wants it right. They have the technology to make it right consistently, so they should do it. If anything, it would give fans and players one less thing to bitch about!
  19. I feel that is the bigger deterrent than the money. I also never felt it was a job losing move, to be over. I understand they may have had to trade Taillon to get under. And maybe Jed didn’t want to do that. I just wish it was planned a little better. And maybe if they went over by $2M or whatever it was, and the money isn’t the issue, they should have gone over by more, to the max of the first penalty, and gotten a better player in the off season. I am not so upset about them going over. I am more unhappy that if they were over and not concerned about it they should have done a little more.
  20. What happens year 3? I get what you and others defending Jed are saying. It isn’t that big a deal. But all things equal I am pretty sure they would rather have been under this year. I don’t consider this an egregious offense and want to tar and feather Jed, like some do. But I do feel they should have stayed under this year.
  21. While I don’t feel Jed is nearly as bad at his job as some people do here and actually think he gets criticized more than he should, But, IMO going over the LT this year was a mistake and mismanagement. Now the option is going over a second year in a row, where penalties get increased, or resetting and going under. In a year they really should put a good team in the field, I hate the idea of resetting. This is the perfect year to trade some minor league assets(who are probably at their highest value) to bring in major league talent and spend somewhat aggressively in FA. It would have been easier with less penalties if they weren’t over this year. So I do worry they will stay under. And they shouldn’t.
  22. Finish strong to increase your trade value. He is one guy I definitely see the Cubs trading.
  23. I disagree. There is a strike zone for a reason. The ball needs to be in the zone for it to be a strike. A hitter shouldn’t have to adjust to an umpire consistently calling a ball 2 inches off the plate a strike. Same with 2 inches wrong anywhere around the plate. Pitches need to be called correctly.
  24. What do you want them to do in the 4th game of the series?
  25. Steele ended up throwing 16 more pitches after he had Rooker struck out of the umpire made the right call. Had to be pulled early due to pitch count. They really need to get rid of umpires calling pitches. The worst part about it is when reviewing the umpires they are given an inch either way so basically any close pitch they aren’t being considered wrong.
