Are Bader and J. Turner still available? I feel they are but not sure if I missed anything. I feel like adding those guys and Scott or, more likely, Yates would be a good finish to the off season. Turner can play 1st on days you give Busch a day off and fill in for Shaw if/when Shaw struggles. And can fill for PCA against tough lefties. The rest of the bench is Kelly and either Brujan or Workman. That would probably get them close to spending near the LT line and give them a solid bench and pen. Not thrilled with the rotation, but maybe they know more than us. Maybe they expect Wicks, Horton and/or Brown to be someone who can be a solid #3 starter for them this year. Maybe only for 100 innings, however. Which would be fine.

I do think they will get either Yates, Robertson, or Jansen. I just don’t see Scott. And hearing the Dodgers want him I think we know where this ends up.

Exactly. Big news at this convention is Sosa is back and a new uniform. I am not sure which I care less about. But convention goers love it.

Leclerc off the market too. He went for $10M. Yates is going to get $15M. Maybe even a second year. Robertson or Jansen at probably $12M.

When it comes to uniforms I really don’t care. The few jerseys I have are the basic classic white pinstripe. I only wear a jersey if I go to a game. But I do like hats and wear them often. I don’t like the Cubs basic hat but I do like this one. I will be buying this hat.

But when you do this you are ending up posting things 2 hours after we are already discussing it. I think that is what some are trying to tell you. Your post are not breaking news. They are old news. I don’t particularly care one way or the other. Just telling you why it is being mentioned to you.

Yep, that was what I was trying to say earlier. Just put a wrong number in. No idea why they can’t go to $233M or so and will be fine being around $220M. As it is, the LT line being the marker is insulting as it is to the Cubs fans. Now being this far below when they could have added maybe $10M to $15M to sign or trade for a starter better than Rea is very frustrating.

Maybe Suarez? Seems Cease is not an option, since the Cubs said they are looking for pen and bench. Suarez for Assad and a prospect on the 40 man? Besides having to get guys in the 40 man roster, they want to do it without spending money. So it will have to be higher paid players traded for a couple of 40 man guys.

Doesn’t look like the Cubs plan some surprise at the convention. Guess they are going with the big news being Sammy is back, Tucker is here for 1 year and, or course, new alternate uniforms!!! They sure do know how to excite the people who go to that thing.

If we are going to criticize the Cubs for trading a guy they signed in the 10th round a year before don’t we also have to give them credit for drafting a guy like him in round 10? Honestly he still has a long way to go. And Dodger prospects always get ranked better than they should. Bush was a good get. If either Ferris or Hope become solid players that is just the way it is. I am happy with Nusch.!

You’re right. My bad. I meant to say $35M. They have that much that they can spend and still be comfortably under the LT. Spending $25M would be cutting payroll more than I thought they would. I fixed my original post now. But your response is correct as it pertains to my original post.

So it looks like it would be hard for them to spend $35M for a pen arm and 2 bench bats. So definitely well under the LT line and definitely on orders from ownership to cut payroll, not just make sure they are under the LT. Which actually sucks if that is the case. It is the difference between signing Rea or trading for Lopez, Cease, or even Montgomery with Az taking on a portion of his salary. Basically ownership saying they don’t care about having a good staff, they want to save money.

I think the only way they consider Montgomery is if Az takes on some of his salary. So he wouldn’t be $23M. Maybe $16m or so. At $16M if they can still add Yates and a decent bench bat, I would consider him. He also can’t cost much in the way of a prospect. The trade would have to be a payroll dump. Then I wouldn’t mind him. He would cost the Cubs less than Lopez or Castillo in a trade, and for 1 year I would take him at $16M with Yates and a good bench bat over Flaherty for $24M and Paul Seward and a lesser bench bat. I do think he can absolutely be as good as Castillo or Flaherty next years.

Same scenerio but a little less money. Honestly, I would rather use that IFA money to get a guy now. So instead of Cassie in a trade you trade the IFA money. Cubs keep all their prospects, get their main 2 guys in the IFA market and get an asset for the team this year. Assad, IFA money and whatever else is needed for Cease, as an example. SD gets Sasaki. Then if Cease walks in one year, fans aeenr complain about losing Cassie. If they lose out on a 16 year old and he does become a star, there is no guarantee he would have been a star if he stayed with the Cubs. Can’t worry about that result. IMO a team in a position to win should be considering moving the IFA money for an asset now, not a prospect. Or at the very least,, it is another consideration.

Looks to be $3.8M so they have around $2.4M to &2.5M left. But they can still probably do something with that money if the right deal came along.

Ok, so they still have over $2M left. So, different angle, if $3M gets the 9th best prospect in baseball, what does $2.2M get. If that IFA money is valued as something like a guy between 50-100 in the mlb prospect list, instead of trading a prospect for Cease could the Cubs trade $2.2M of IFA money, Assad and a lower level prospect to him? If you are the Padres and $2.2M allows you to get Sasaki, is that better than the Cubs offering Cassie+ the same guys as you offer with the $2.2M? I would say in that scenerio the $2.2 is more valuable. Regardless of what it would take to get Cease, my question is “is $2.2M more valuable than a guy like Cassie”? In this case, it appears to be.
