Saw Ohtani can possibly opt out if ownership changes or if Friedman leaves. Basically an anti tank/rebuild clause in his contract. Cubs probably didn't want to offer that since they are one of the few big market teams that enjoy doing a rebuild every 5 years
I was coping with the thought that ohtani didn't offer this deferment to any other team. Disappointing to learn this. Dodgers just went out there and got their man
It already has kinda worked out. The contract numbers itself created a frenzy in the sports and non sports world. Ohtani is the most marketable mlb player in the game right now.
Everybody in Japan is a dodger fan now and someone mentioned on here that will likely create a pipeline of future npb talent wanting to play for the Dodgers. I saw that report that Sasaki wanted to be posted so that he could play with ohtani. Was that fake? Maybe yeah but that is a likely outcome of him signing with the Dodgers. The increased revenue of him being with the team will offset a lot of his cost. And this is all before he even takes the field. If he comes back hitting, they have a great DH. If he comes back pitching too then the Dodgers got a steal even at 700 mil.
This case is unique to a unique player like ohtani.
Saw that roki Sasaki asked to be posted but was likely to be denied. Interesting to follow since he's probably better than Yamamoto and younger. Might happen next year
With everything that's been said about Ohtani, with him wanting to win and being a guy devoted to his method and not liking to change it, I have doubts he'd join the Bluejays in the toughest division in baseball in a new country but im no insider.
That's a lot to give up, guess they did really want pitching. If the sticking point was Horton then I'm OK losing out here but if Jed balked because of the other arms they were asking for then I'd be pissed.
And the Astros developed those players they drafted and signed through international free agency into superstars. They haven't had the need to go big in free agency.
King and Thorpe is already an overpay and they are reportedly going to tack on more.
Morel/Brown/Wesneski somewhat similar to that offer? Maybe Wicks instead of Wesneski
So out on both ohtani and Yamamoto? Jed needs to get over his fear of big contracts, his weird fetish of trying to model after the rays is absurd because they never have won a world series. You need star power to win.
