  1. if i were lovie, i'd tell the press that: "While we're very unhappy with our starting defensive tackle's apparent illness concerning the compulsion to own multiple unlicensed handguns, we're trying to win a superbowl, not sweep the good citizen awards here. so, to all the people calling for his immediate suspension, get bent, please."
  2. i imagine a room full of GMs sitting around listening to theo declare that he's interested in acquiring a closer and is open to possible trade scenarios. hendry puts his hand up, theo ignores him. hendry begins waving his hands like a madman, theo continues ignoring him. hendry finally stands up. "jim, sit down."
  3. i don't like either really. crisp forgot how to play baseball apparently and pena, well, he's getting better.
  4. havlat is the ill.
  5. Rowand isn't an FA. Fine, trade for him then. He's on the block according to a lot of reports. Rowand's career numbers against LHers is .289/.351/.494/.845. Its not a bad back-up idea to getting Church. I don't think it would impact the decision to get Floyd in that Rowand is a righty and Hendry feels he needs a lefty bat with power who can give the Cubs some added punch on days against those tough right-handed pitchers. Floyd would make a much better DH than either Ward or Rowand. So, if you got Rowand, Floyd would still be an almost necessary upgrade. But acquiring Ryan Church kills all those birds with one stone. I'd love to get Rowand, but he's going to cost you a lot in players. i wouldn't give jacque jones for aaron rowand, talk about overrated. the guy runs into a fence to make a catch and all of the sudden he's the best thin since sliced bread.
  6. yeah, but he's much more patient. I do like Brady---he's gritty and comes to play every day. His defense looked to me to be very good. But as the SLG indicates, he's a singles hitter i don't care about the gritty or "ready to play" truisms, i just care that clark knows how to draw walks.
  7. It's actually even worse-Pierre's worst SLG number in the last 4 years was .354. but so was clark's. the year that pierre's was .354, clark's was .426, btw. i just tend to think that clark is a more valuable player, add in cost and he's way more valuable.
  8. yeah, but he's much more patient.
  9. his OBP sagged at the end of the year, but was over .380 for a while. he wouldn't cost much in terms of players, is very selective at the plate and plays adequate defense. i don't see what we're waiting for on this one. i'll take clark leading off next season, please.
  10. Well, for one, not everybody is enamored with one good year. but for that one good year to actually decrease his value? that doesn't make sense. When did it decrease? I don't remember it being higher. He wasn't exactly a hot commodity on the free agent market last year, why should he become a hot commodity on the trade market a year later. when did i say that he should be a "hot commodity"? it just shouldn't be this hard to get any kind of value in return for him is all i'm saying.

  12. how in the hell does it happen that jacque jones has NO trade value, how? he had a good year at the plate and is somewhat of a bargain. he's only 31, why does nobody want him? why do all of the players we would seek to trade have absolutely no trade value?
  13. would you have done Hill for Garcia because thats basically what the Phils did- no they didn't. i bet a deal involving jones and marmol would have gotten it done.
  14. if you're going to play a lot of small-ball, then it would be a good thing to have izturis in the 2 hole. that way, it doesn't affect the team much when we're giving away outs at the top of the order. if you decide that giving away outs at the top of the order is an incredibly stupid idea, as i do, then izturis should probably not be in your order at all.
  15. you gotta be kidding me. hendry throws a clot looking for pitching and he never even sniffed in garcia's direction. it made sense for us, but obviously not enough to even feign interest for hendry. what a load of garbage. any bets on the next pitcher of considerably lesser caliber than garcia to make as much or more?
  16. i think the bears are going to gash the vikings for 175 yards rushing. that's my prediction.
  17. I just thought the same thing. I was telling one of my Sox fan friends that I don't understand why Crede is hated by some of their fan base, and then I looked at his stats. His OPS this year was ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY FIVE points less than Miguel Cabrera. It may be unfair to compare with Cabrera, but for someone that is talked about so much I'd have expected more. hawk is picking him for MVP next season, i think.
  18. because he doesn't shower and shave, obviously. i think i must change my "most overrated player in baseball" from juan pierre (it was soriano in 05) to crede.
  19. seriously, why is he so desireable? i mean, i don't get why anyone would ever consider him a better player than ramirez. can we get a sox fan's opinion on this? his power numbers are pretty good, but he's pretty much far far behind ramirez in every offensive facet of the game. and he's not that much better defensively, especially after the back thing.
  20. Those statistics aren't very important at all, especially RBI and R which are almost completely worthless. SB has some value, but Soriano gets himself out on the bases so much that he doesn't exactly provide a ton of value with his baserunning. How the hell are RBI and R almost completely worthless? Is VORP, Isod, Ipod, Ihop, PMS better ways to judge a player? they're worthless because they are team-contingent. and to anwer your question, it's very likely that one could come up with a stat with the "PMS" acronym that would be more telling. but it wouldn't be from the dead-ball era so you would likely dismiss it. Good one. is that your final answer?

  22. You think Hawpe's a better player than Soriano? Yes. Wow, I mean Hawpe is a very nice player but I personally dont think he is on Soriano's level. I think it is quite obvious that you dont really like the signing of Soriano, but dont let that cloud your judgment. If you are going the route of production vs. price, then I can see your point, otherwise I would have to disagree. But I would love to hear why you came to that conclusion. Hawpe in 2006: .293/.383/.515/.898 Soriano in 2006: .277/.351/.560/.911 Soriano has only put up Hawpe's OPS once in his career. And Hawpe is 3.5 years younger with just two full major league seasons under his belt. I do think it is really possible that Hawpe is going to bloom into an All-Star player, but you have to look at important statistics like runs scored, RBI, SB, and HR. Hawpe is going to have to really step it up to get on those elite levels that Soriano eclipses on a yearly basis. those statistics are not all that important.
  23. maybe because stopping runs is more contingent upon pitching than defense.
