Well....he looked at strikes 1 and 2 as well. so? i don't see how that matters. reds pitchers walked what 4 cubs that inning, a very difficult task. So it would be nice to see our slugger take the bat off his shoulder at least once per at bat. i don't see what he could have done with any of those pitches. they were pretty much perfect. it's not like he looked at 3 down the middle. he was looking for a mistake over the plate, tip your cap to santos, he's good for a series of pitches like that maybe once every 20 appearances. Hey, I'm not hammering on him like some do on here, I'm just saying that I think he should have been looking to protect the plate on that count and in that situation. Anything close, and that was close enough, and he should be swinging trying to stay in there. They were good pitches, but all 3 strikes were put in the exact same spot. At some point, he needs to swing just to try to keep the inning alive. protecting the plate is for hitters like eckstein. i want lee to look for a pitch he can drive and then try to drive it. if the pitcher makes some lucky pitches, whatever. looking for something to just put in play does nothing to keep the inning alive. hitting a dribbler to conine ain't going to do it, he has a better chance at getting a walk than doing anything with those pitches.
