  1. It's funny, but Zito's deal is heavily backoaded, with the first big payment due in 2009. It looks just like a Hendry contract. It also looks like 90% of long-term contracts. Heavily backloaded deals are not exclusively a Hendry thing. Yeah, I'm aware of that, but Hendry has developed a trademark mania for dumping every big paycheck on 2009. It's like he thinks the world will end on December 31st, 2008.
  2. It's funny, but Zito's deal is heavily backoaded, with the first big payment due in 2009. It looks just like a Hendry contract. The Cubs really could offer Z the same contract.
  3. Jones obviously needs a platoon partner but he's already unhappy in Chicago and if he's put in a platoon he'll likely be a major problem in the clubhouse. I hope the Cubs can persuade him to accept a platoon, because he never should have been an everyday player in the first place. Can't say I'm optimistic about that.
  4. Not sure if this has been posted, but Z wants a Zito contract, and he wants it before opening day. I assume Captain Backload will give Z what he wants. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/220720,CST-SPT-csep20.article
  5. It still astounds me that Hendry found a taker for Neifi. He was a plainly awful player in the midst of a terrible season. How could professional baseball men not understand what casual fans could?
  6. PECOTA is way off the mark if it's projecting increased OBP to be a permanent trend for Soriano. Soriano in 2006: 67 BB Bases empty: 435 AB, 25 BB, .278/.326/.556 Runners on: 212 AB, 42 BB, .274/.396/.566 RISP: 117 AB, 36 BB, .231/.411/.462 Soriano's 2006 IsoD leaps from .048 with bases empty to .180 with RISP. IMO this is a clearcut case of a guy who was the only scary hitter on his team. Other than Fonz the Nats lineup just plain sucked, and there was no incentive to throw him a hittable pitch with RISP. On the Cubs Fonz will be batting in front of DLee and Aram, which is a whole different situation.
  7. They probably won't carry Womack and Macias at the same time, but I hope they do. We could see Womack 2B Macias RF Guzman SS Logan CF Awesome.
  8. And they're looking at Jose Macias too.
  9. Actually the reports on Wood, Miller and Prior are positive! Man, I hope and pray Prior is healthy! http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070117&content_id=1780798&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc Not to be a rotten egg, but it is, after all, cubs.com... Translation: there will be no CF acquisition. Wow, the Cubs pumped the payroll way up and backloaded all their big deals, yet are still forced to lean heavily on a very sketchy rookie due to a money crunch. Wait til the really big paychecks come due in 2009. Could get real ugly unless the farm surprises everybody and produces a major contribution to the big team in the next 2 years. Where are you getting the bolded part of your post from what was quoted? Do you doubt for one second that Hendry wouldn't be seeking an established veteran everyday CF if there was money available to take on another big salary? The Cubs are 1000% in win-now mode and there's not a chance in hell Hendry is happy about relying on Pie after his dismal showing in winter ball. Hendry's spin that he's not seeking a veteran starting CF because he believes it's important to develop your own players is total BS. If the Trib gave him more money for it he'd be on the phone 10 seconds later making offers for a CF.

  11. Could be that consensus opinion on Jones is that he belongs in a platoon, but that he would sulk if platooned. Sulking aside, Jones is not really a great bargain if you have to spend a few mil to get him a platoon partner. Also could be that people are skeptical that he'll produce another .886 OPS vs. RHP.
  12. I'll take a wild guess and say Z will be offered a heavily backloaded deal with the first big paycheck in 2009. Just a hunch.
  13. Those are Perez's expectations. His situation will be similar to that of Grissom last year. If he has a great spring, he's got a shot. If not, the Cubs will give him the choice between Iowa or looking for another job. Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I realize the Cubs need players for spring training and to fill positions in the minors, but Perez really seems like a player for a team with a low budget desperate for anyone that can play SS. Maybe even all those spots are taken. They are taken. We already have Izturis, Cedeno, and Theriot. Even at Iowa Perez would just be a waste of space. Which is why you probably won't even have to worry about it. At the moment I'm not real worried about Perez making the big team, but it does bother me that Perez might get a lot of starts at SS in Iowa. Those starts should all go to younger better players.

  15. Agreed. Tomas Perez is a textbook example of a signing that should justifiably panic fans of any Baker-managed team.
  16. Whether you have a guy on a short leash or not, I don't see any benefit in "making it clear" to the player. I do. Demp admitted he was unprepared at times and also not in the best shape. When you tell a guy he's on a short leash you're saying he better do his best to bring his A game from day 1. That may be a unneccessary message for some players, but I think Demp could use it.
  17. If I were Lou I'd make it clear to Demp that he's on a short leash. He had a nice 4 month run in 2005 but that's not nearly long enough of a track record of success to justify sticking with him through another bad start. For better or worse the Cubs are 100% in win-now mode, which should mean a shorter leash for anybody easily replaced.
  18. I think eventually the voters will let McGwire in, but first they will register their contempt by snubbing him for a few years. We'll probably see an unofficial "decree through grapevine" to specify the year when the voters finally allow the steroid monsters in.
  19. Amazing this dude had multiple offers to choose from.
  20. Do you really think Jim Hendry cares about the future?
  21. How did the Cubs earn a B for player procurement? They haven't been the least bit creative or smart about upgrading the big league team, they've just relied on the brute force of a jumbo-sized wallet. They have certainly added talent at the big league level, but they have paid top dollar for every bit of it. Any bozo could have done that.
  22. He was also on an impressive hot streak going into trading season, and he's won a World Series, dude. I'm certain we could have gotten something decent for him.
  23. Trading Ricky Nolasco for one season of Juan Pierre wasn't the best way to further the longterm success of the Cubs. Failing to trade Pierre for prospect(s) at the deadline didn't help either.
  24. He didn't. The Cubs had asked him to cut short his season so he wouldn't be tired come spring training. Or maybe the Cubs just wanted to give him a face-saving excuse to walk away and quit embarrassing himself. Probably a smart thing for the org. to do.
  25. Not a chance in hell Z will be traded. Hendry has 100% committed the Cubs to winning now and it's way too late to turn back even if he wanted to. It wouldn't surprise me to see Z get a deal in which he makes only $8M in in '07 and '08 and $28M in '09 and '10. Hendry has already gambled his career on winning in the next 2 years so more deferred debt won't bother him.
