  1. I'm still not satified with Lee's HR production, regardless of his OPS.
  2. I didn't see the game. How well is Soriano running?
  3. Which is exactly why he shouldn't be hitting leadoff when he returns. He should be put in the 5-hole and left there. There's absolutely no reason for him to be hitting leadoff, especially if he's not going to be stealing any bases for us down the stretch. I remember how slowly Aram "ran" in 2005 when the coaches told him to be cautious. He pretty much jogged around the bases. I don't know if Soriano will be that slow but I'm sure he will be slow. There's no way Lou will let him run at anything near full speed.
  4. Sori will have orders to be very cautious so as to prevent another injury, which means he'll probably be a real slug in the outfield and on the basepaths. He's not an OBP guy, so he's going to have to hit some homers to be of value.
  5. it's important to note that when hendry finally got the chance to go after the Top FA, he gave an 8 year contract to a guy who is OPSing 847 as a 31 year old. EDIT: OPSing 847 as a 31 year old and very much meeting expectations, i should add. OPSing .847 while playing left field -- the easiest position to fill and the one with the highest offensive expectations.
  6. I very much doubt anyone will get more than 50 innings out of Wood next year. It probably won't even be that much. It's not worth the expense or the aggravation.
  7. Good question Everyday play in Iowa would be the best way to boost Murt's offseason trade value.
  8. I can't see any chance of Murton coming back for 2008. It's stupid that he wasn't moved months ago.
  9. Murt gets 3 hits, then is benched for a waiver-wire dude who has a .555 OPS vs. RHP.
  10. The Monroe acquisition puts a period on the end of Murton's career with the Cubs. He won't play much anymore, he won't be on the playoff roster, and the odds of him being back next year are close to zero. People bitching about the Murton man-love can quit because it's a dead issue now. He's on his way out.
  11. The only reason this team is over .500 is because of the soft schedule due to the horribleness of the NL Central. The Cubs are no better than mediocre now. We also have $90M committed to 7 players in 2009, so we'll need to see what the new owner wants to spend before we can even begin to talk about contending longterm.
  12. I'm not sure Hendry has changed. I think it may be more a case of Dusty likes that type of player but Piniella has this habit of liking players who can actually play. Yeah, that certain species of useless utility player just isn't around anymore. Izturis was the last Dusty-type guy we had and Lou didn't like him. You do seem some traces of Dusty in his handling of Floyd, though it's more forgivable since Floyd was good as recently as 2005. Dusty liked players who had never been good. We ended 2005 with Jose Macias as our primary leadoff hitter. Hard to imagine Lou doing that.
  13. I'm not sure Hendry has changed. I think it may be more a case of Dusty likes that type of player but Piniella has this habit of liking players who can actually play. So, basically Hendry is a G.M. who is a little too attuned into what his manager wants. Considering that Hendry is pretty good at contracts and trades for the most part, maybe we just need to hire somebody with only 1 job-to hire the manager :D. I remember Dusty said he asked Hendry to bring back Eric Karros and Randall Simon to play 1B in 2004. I've always wondered if Hendry would have granted Dusty's wish if Derrek Lee hadn't been available. I think he probably would have, which would have been hilarious considering both those guys were so bad they were out of baseball midway through the 2004 season.
  14. I hate that the 2009 budget has $90M tied up in 7 players. Unless the farm produces like never before we'll need the new owners to spend like crazy just to put a .500 team together.
  15. Huge 2007 payroll and tons of deferred debt looming, just to be barely above .500 while playing a creampuff schedule in a horrible division in a weak league. It's pathetic. There's no defending it.
  16. So is there still room for Burrell's $14M salary in 2008? I'm guessing the answer is no.
  17. Why would the tribune care about excess backloading payrolls? They wont own the team next year so they should careless. It makes it harder to get a good price for the team. In 2009 and 2010 the Cubs are going to be awful unless they have one of the biggest payrolls in baseball. That's not an attractive selling point for a team.
  18. Z is going to get 5/90, and Burrell is owed $14M in 2008. It would be tough to pay both guys next year unless Z gets a hugely backloaded deal, which wouldn't bother Jimbo, but I'm suspecting the Trib is getting fed up with the excessive backloading in the payroll. Trying to fit in Z and Burrell now would make it ridiculously expensive to assemble a complete baseball team in 2009. 2010 would be pretty bad too. Potential buyers are no doubt aware of this stuff.
  19. I am so mad I stopped the DVR last night like, 5 minutes before they showed McGiggly! Am I the only one here who thinks those boobs look totally fake?
  20. That is the new chicago cubs logo, and is the start of a 5+ game win streak! Bust the Birds. Fake boobs in logo = fake rally.
  21. 28 total bases for the Cubs today, despite not hitting any homers. Pretty amazing. I wonder what the TB record is for a homerless game. Prolly something Fred could look up.
  22. At this point it looks silly to me to have Lee batting behind Soriano. Lee has great OBP but not so much power anymore, while Soriano has poor OBP and the most power on the team. Soriano is also going to be hobbling on the basepaths for the rest of the year. It's obvious that Soriano should be driving in Lee and not vice versa.
  23. How do you figure? In July the Cubs went 17-9 while Soriano put up a dismal .701 OPS. It was like having a utility infielder as a starting LF, yet the team continued to win. He was player of the month in June, that's when our surge began, not July. Soriano gets credit for the Cubs' success in July because he was good in June? I'd rather credit the players who played well in July.
