  1. Hey, Bruce, you have to "judge him on his whole record" -- whatever that means! It means when a manager has some success he's earned a license to suck for the rest of his career.
  2. The Reds should dump Josh Hamilton. 3 SB is pretty damn lame for a CF. No speed. He also strikes out a lot and walks too much for a non-basestealer. They should trade for Juan Pierre.
  3. Speaking as a Cubs fan, I think Dusty is a perfect fit for the Reds. He would have been a great fit for any NL Central team, though his talents would have been wasted in Pittsburgh.
  4. I totally agree with Rotoworld that Dunn is much more likely to be available now. He's a slow white guy who strikes out a lot and has a .248 career BA and poor defense. Given his lack of speed, the 100+ walks may actually be a negative in Dusty's eyes. I hope Jimbo makes some inquiries. I would love to have Dunn in LF and Soriano in RF next year.
  5. Rowand can make a perfectly reasonable case that he is worth every bit of $84M if Alfonso Soriano is worth $136M. Both are coming off great years after two bad years, both will be 31 yrs old in the first season of their new contracts, both have good but clearly below superstar career numbers for their positions. Rowand also put up a .905 OPS in 2004.
  6. Just because he's not going to repeat 2005 doesn't mean he should be moved out of the 3 spot. His power is fine as he showed in the second half this year and there is no reason to move him in the order. I don't have a problem with Lee in the #3 slot if the Cubs get at least a little power boost elsewhere. I've been in love with the idea of batting Lee #2 in the off chance that the Cubs do get someone huge like ARod for a while now. Having someone like Lee batting #2 gives you the OBP you want up there and likely gets Soriano getting on base more and seeing more fastballs to smack. I'd have Lee at #2 and Soriano at #3. Soriano has high power and low OBP, Lee has average power and high OBP. It's silly to have Lee driving in Soriano instead of the other way around. It was especially silly when Soriano had the bad quad slowing him down.
  7. How can there be a trade market for a player who passed through waivers unclaimed? It's not like Trachs did anything for the Cubs that would make a GM regret not putting in a waiver claim. I'm inclined to believe Rosenthal is wrong.
  8. I'm guessing Marshall is on the trading block now, assuming the Trachsel story is true.
  9. If ARod is seriously concerned about getting a ring then I don't see why he would be particularly excited about going to a team that is about to change owners. Too much uncertainty there. It baffles me that everyone here talks like a Cubs payroll increase is a sure thing. It's not. It could even go down. Certainly ARod is aware of that. If he's just concerned about money then Hendry will need to pay full market value to get him. I don't think that's realistic given the pending sale and existing salary commitments
  10. Ronald is sexy at any weight. The clothes make the man. That and the makeup.
  11. if we honestly believe soriano hits better with no one on base, we should probably keep leading him off and letting him start the game and bat behind the pitcher I'll amend your statement slightly and say that if we honestly believe a hugely expensive power-hitting free agent hits better with no one on base, we shouldn't sign him. Since we did sign him, I'd like to see him drive in someone other than the invisible man. 70 RBI is pathetic for a .560 SLG. If some of his personal numbers suffer a bit I'd be willing to accept that if his RBI's go up. Propping up personal stats of a selected player is not a valid reason to reduce run production.
  12. Soriano overall 2007 stats: HR 33 2B 42 3B 5 RBI 70 2007 w/ bases empty: HR 23 2B 28 3B 5 RBI 23 Soriano absolutely must move out of leadoff next year. This is a guy whose gargantuan contract is based almost entirely on his XBH ability. Hendry and Lou need to ask themselves a question: why do we covet XBH in the first place? Simple -- it's because XBH is the best way to drive in baserunners. Then Hendry should ask himself another question: did I really pay a guy $136 million to hit XBH with no runners on base?
  13. I said if the Cubs got into the playoffs I wanted a WS victory or an embarrassing early exit. I got option B.
  14. I wanted to trade for ARod in the offseason and retool in 2007. I said it at the end of the offseason and still believe that Hendry built a team designed to win in 2007-2008, and then will be financially crippled for several years afterward. Basically it's a team designed to get Hendry his retirement nest egg (contract extension). Despite the playoff appearance I still think the Cubs are lousy for a $100M team that mortaged its future to win now. In any other division they'd be a .500 team at best, which is unfortunate, since the core of the team is composed of players who are at their career peaks, i.e. players who can only go downhill in the future. This is not how I would have built the Cubs. I like a team that's built to last. To get that sometimes you need a rebuilding season, unless you have the Yankees' payroll.
  15. Getting Beltran would mean just short of $109M committed to 8 players in 2009 and $96.5M for 7 players in 2010. I'm guessing the Trib is smart enough to know it can't take on another giant contract if it wants to get a good sale price for the Cubs.
  16. I hate that most of Soriano's salary is based on his ability to hit lots of home runs, yet *apparently* he has to be in leadoff to thrive, which greatly devalues home runs, as evidenced by his lousy 70 RBI's this year and 95 last year, despite hitting a ton of XBH. If you give a guy a gigantic contract to hit home runs, then bat him behind a pitcher and Cesar Izturis, you're wasting money. Then there's the more obvious criticism that .897 OPS is really not superstar production from a LF. For $136M you should be getting the best player at a position, especially if the guy is on the wrong side of 30. I'm also not happy that our other outfielders have had to play out of position to keep Soriano happy in LF. If Soriano is really worth $136M then what is Carlos Beltran worth?
  17. I don't see how this team can possibly afford another superstar salary given the financial uncertainty of the pending ownership change. The Cubs may get some free agents but they won't be superstars.
  18. Z might be the ulimate Jekyll/Hyde player I've ever seen. He pitches like a Hall of Famer sometimes, other times like a crappy cheap spot sparter.
  19. Murton must be starting because he 5-16 vs. Harang with 2 homers. There are good reasons to play Murt but that is not one of them, and Floyd is too hot to sit, especially vs. RHP. I hate these tiny samples dictating playing time.
  20. I understand Theriot is mediocre but it's not too early to start addressing the budget crunch looming in 2009-2010. Part of the price of these recent gigantic contracts handed out by Hendry is that some spots will need to be filled by very cheap players unless the new ownership is a huge spender, which we don't know yet. Theriot has to stay in the meantime.
  21. Once again you show you have the classic cubs.com messageboard vibe down cold. I congratulate you on filling a much-needed void.
  22. Classic cubs.com post. Reminds me of why I left.
  23. Cesar Izturis - 197 AB's Ya, that's pretty bad, though it would have been a lot more AB's under Dusty, and from the 2 hole. "Double leadoff, dude!"
  24. Given the pending sale, I don't see how the Cubs make another blockbuster signing when the 2009 payroll already has $90M tied up in 7 players. If we get someone like Andruw Jones we're looking at $105M or more for 8 players. Even if you fill out the 25 man with warm bodies averaging $800K apiece you're looking at $120M payroll for a team that would suck. To make the team actually have a chance to be good you'd need at least $140M, and likely more. This is the type of stuff that potential buyers don't want to see and it would certainly hurt the sale price of the team.
  25. Cliff Floyd is the very poster child for the old adage that bulky unathletic ballplayers tend to turn old in a hurry. I heard that adage as a kid. Apparently Lou hasn't heard it yet, despite having been in pro baseball since dinosaurs roamed the earth.
