    Uggla and Wagner deserve every bit of derision they get, but let's not forget about Lidge and his old habit of giving it up in high-pressure situations as well. He needs to be nicknamed "Choke." Let's also crap on Hurdle. Since the game is supposed to mean something, since it's supposed to count, you don't try to get everyone in the game. You try to win. The tie wasn't that long ago, it should have been on his mind that he needs to be prepared for a long game. He was managing the game as if he were managing an AS game in the 90s when it meant nothing. Cubs pitchers for the night: 4IP, 1 H, 0B, 6 K. I like it!

    My money is on Lilly. He's reminding me far too much of Bronson Arroyo and his first two years in the NL (minus the home runs off of Glendon freaking Rusch). Look at Bronson now...if that's the track Lilly is following, then I don't want him anywhere near this team next year.

    Then you don't know Hendry. When he gets his eye on someone, he'll bring him in and see how they do here, and they'll stay here so long as they are performing. If Dempster stinks in the second half, then that's another story. Demp was a long-time fav of Hendry just like Floyd and Barrett were before they came here.

    Except for the fact that he's in the conversation of best defensive SS in the game, and he normally posts above average OPSs for his position every year before this one in one of the worst hitters parks in the league. But yeah, he blows.

    One thing I'd like to know is when it became so unacceptable for an adult to try to catch a foul ball? According to some people around here, you may as well be taking candy from a baby.

    to protect your kids? no, I usually don't take the kids. a 5 and 2 year old tend to get bored after about 1/2 an inning so why do you bring it? i'm not making fun of you (in this thread, at least), i just don't understand the psyche of a gloved baseball fan. I used to have season tickets for the local Short-A minor league team. My seats were 3 rows behind the 3rd base dugout, so a lot of foul balls (both liners and pop ups) headed our way. Again, I hardly bring one anymore, I just don't understand why someone shouldn't. The only reason I've heard is "it's not impressive to catch a ball with a glove" and "because it's dumb" why didn't you wear a helmet? Because they mess up 'fros.

    Tough crowd! Is a 3.41 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a strikeout per inning really "mediocre?" No reliever with those numbers will ever be considered "dominant" or "shut down." They're good numbers, but nothing that is that special. Thing is, 3 or 4 bad outings out of 35 or 40 will blow-up a relivers nos. in some cases. True, but there wasn't any breakdown like that for Fuentes specifically. Had he said "he has an ERA of XXX if you take out one or two bad appearances" that'd support that Fuentes is top notch as a reliever better than what he did. I don't know if Fuentes's stats are marred more badly by a small number of outlier appearances than the average reliever or not. 12 of 14 ER's from Fuentes have come in 4 games. I think it is safe to say that beside those few games (4 out of 41) he has been downright dominate. After allowing 5 runs on 6/30 he has not allowed a hit or walked a batter in his last 5 outings. That doesn't seem to be any different than most other decent setup men or closers in the league. Most decent relievers you can point to 4-5 bad outings that account for most of their ERA.

    yeah, and your argument comparing fans with gloves to players with gloves was air tight. about as airtight as "every adult with a glove is a mouth-breather who just wants autographs and will steal balls from kids" i just can't imagine going through the hassle of lugging around a glove to catch a foul ball because a) who wants to carry a glove around a ballpark all day? and b) who wants a foul ball? since you're defending glove wearers, i'm guessing you bring your glove to the ballpark...so why do you do it? To protect young kids from getting hit in the head with a line drive and suffering a fractured skull? Actually, I've never brought one with me just because it's a hassle. Now that I have a kid though, I'm brining one with me every time once he's old enough to go with me.

    They're a pain in the ass to lug around at the bars afterward? Drop it back in the car after the game before you hit the bars? (assuming your car is within a couple of blocks...)

    If that goes back to being a strict platoon when Soriano gets back, it should be fine. Edmonds may not OPS .900 against RHP all year, but he should be good for .750+, which is adequate enough. RJ is a fairly productive hitter against lefties. I agree but what worries me is how well Sori will come back from his injury. If he's back and doing his thing what you wrote is fine but if he isn't, what the Cubs have now imo won't win it all. More production is needed out of left and DeRosa/Johnson/Ward don't do it for me. The truth is, the chance of the best team going into the playoffs winning the World Series is only marginally better than the worst playoff team's chances. I only bring this up because it is a huge pet peeve of mine when anyone plays the "they won't have enough to win it all" card. If you're in the playoffs, you have enough to win it all. It's not romantic, it's not what everyone wants to hear, but it's pretty much the truth. For proof, see: 2006 Cardinals. Inferior teams catching lighting in a bottle or hitting on all gears at the right time is something that you can't control. The only thing a GM can do is stack the deck as far in his favor as he possibly can then hope for the best.

    If you want to put me in the smartass crowd, at least give me the opportunity to post something worthy. All I simply did in that post was put in my $0.02 on the argument without denigrating anyone else. I put forth absolutely no effort to rebuke any of your opinions in that post. There wasn't anything personal in that post whatsoever. Apparently, you are in serious need of some reading comprehension skills. If you're somehow linking me adding my opinion in that post to being a smartass, then you're either a) an idiot, or b) you're way too sensitive to post on any board on the internet as you can't tolerate anyone who disagrees with you. If you fall in category a, then just say so and we'll all start ignoring you instead of riling you up. If you're in category b, then you need to stay away from the internet for the sake of your own stress level and well-being as you obviously can't handle it.

    Then why the hell are we wasting millions of dollars on a manager? I want a competent manager who can make that call. If you start allowing every pitcher make that call, I don't think you realize the can of worms that would be getting opened up. The other thing with Bedard, from what I've read, it doesn't seem like he tries to take himself out of the game when he feels like he's done. He does it when he hits what he thinks his pitch count limit should be. I think almost everyone here understands that any given pitcher has a little more in the tank on some days, and a little less. Bedard should be able to go over 100 from time to time, and is better off being yanked before hitting 100 other times. If he's allowed to take himself out at 100, that also means he may be sticking in there longer than he should be on occasion to keep his average up to 100. Randy Johnson has been pitching the bigs for around 20 years, and knows this game, and his body, well. He's also over 40, he's not in his 20s. An isolated incident of RJ taking himself out of the game on shouldn't be equated to Bedard setting a pitch count limit on himself every game.

    Count me into the crowd that really cares less what order guys bat in as long as our best hitters are getting plenty of looks. That said, I do realize that some players aren't as mentally strong as others, and may need to be placed in less than optimal positions in the lineup to get the most production out of them because that is where they are "comfortable." If a guy produces well in a slot, then good. Don't fix it.

    It's like you type what we all are thinking 8-) Though, IMO, Hendry was using the Gallagher "untouchable" label at the beginning of the negotiations just to make him more appealing to Beane when we decided to "actually" make him available. If i'm Hendry, I know once I "budge" on Gallagher it's less likely Beane would ask for more players on top of that since you've already and made a player available to him that he thought he wouldn't originally get. At least that's what I would have done. Am I the only one who thinks Gaudin is undervalued as well? This guy broke into the majors at 19. How many pitchers made their ML debuts before turning 20 over the last 20 years? How many did that and didn't have arm problems before they were 25? This guys got good stuff, still has a couple of years before he hits his physical peak years, is still learning how to pitch despite having more experience than most other 25 year old pitchers, can work out of the pen or start, and knows that Lou hates walks :) . People keep looking at Gaudin as a decent swing man, an insurance policy in case Hardin goes down. I look at getting him in the deal not as an insurance policy, but a coup.

    If Greene, gets out of PETCO before next year, I bet that he at least equals Theriot offensively. Greene is no more likely to repeat his offensive atrocity of a season next year as Theriot is to repeat his breakout next year. If they both gravitate towards the norm next year, Greene's glove gives him a huge advantage. I like the idea of buying low on Greene, then selling high on Theriot. That wouldn't be a bad way to start getting some talent back in the farm system again.

    It never was. Some would disagree. But I've always thought it was fine if you have children with you. No, there's never been any such unwritten rule.No gloves allowed for fans over 12, man. C'mon, you're killing me here. why? this is the stupidest rule ever. Let the youngsters bring gloves in the hopes of catching a ball. Are you really going to bring your glove and snag it away from a little kid anyway? It also makes you look like a huge dork. I laugh at grown men who bring gloves, because they're often the same guys who end up waiting for autographs with the kids outside of the players' parking lot after the game. Waiting for players after the game outside the park for autographs = dork. Has nothing to do with bringing a glove to the game, there's no correllation. As far as "snagging a ball from a little kid," how do you know they aren't trying to snag a ball for their kid? Lame post.
