  1. I agree. Those GM's who thought the Harden trade was reactionary, are buffoons. The ONLY way the A's would have traded Harden on the spur of the moment, is if acquriing team gave Beane the keys to the system to pick whoever he wanted in the deal. You definately get the feeling that this trade was not "a spur of the moment" type trade as those bitter, jaded GMs think it was. I'm guessing there was just one bitter GM. Maybe someone who refuses to believe that any clubs are talking about anything without him knowing about it. Or, maybe it was the Brewers, who didn't appreciate being one-upped so quickly after their big moment.
  2. Catchers develop slower than other position players normally. Soto is an exception to the rule even after you consider that. He's a very poor example to counter that argument. There are always exceptions, but good organizations don't bank on them.
  3. Meph's boy Khalil Greene would make an OK backup at SS and has some pop off the right side of the plate. Khalil Greene would be pointless, he doesn't have pop this year. The argument everyone likes to make about how well he would do outside Petco doesn't really hold water this year. He's slugging higher at home then on the road. And when I say higher, that doesn't exactly means that its high. Home: SLG% .362 Road: SLG% .298 He has been terrible. Oh I know. Hence him being a backup. I'd do that deal hoping a change of scenery might make him not suck. If SD would let him go cheaply enough (which we all know won't happen), he'd be a great option as a backup. Hendry would get kudos from me for buying low on a guy who normally was one of the league's best shortstops. Regardless of what happens in the playoffs, Hendry should seriously consider selling high on Theriot. I love what the guy has done, but I can't see this year as being anything other than a fluke. Get Khalil, trade Theriot high in the off season, then let Khalil and Ronny fight it out next year.
  4. IIRC, there's a service in Colorado Springs called "Bobby Bonds Bail Bonds" That would be hilarious if true (especially since Barry's father was Bobby). I checked Google out of curiosity and found a Bobby Brown Bail Bonds in Colorado, but not Bobby Bonds. That doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one; maybe they just don't have a web site. Or maybe there used to be one but not anymore.I haven't been there since December, so it's probably Bobby Brown's bail bonds (still hilarious, IMO), and I was just recalling wrong.
  5. Wow at those three. Considering all of the flak that Reyes is getting for not performing up to his potential, it's surprising to see him in the list. Hanley and Kinsler not too much.
  6. Or they go into extras, which could turn ugly, as we really need the NL to win this year.
  7. Do we still get credit for 8 all stars since he's only getting the nod to replace one of our own?
  8. I agree. I think the time off will do him more good than a confidence boost, so hopefully he doesn't come into the game. Hopefully a couple of the all-star hitters from other teams will drop him a line on what he's doing wrong or why they're suddenly smacking him around. I don't know why they'd do that, but hopefully one or two will be a chatty-kathy and reveal something to him, so he can benefit from just being there.
  9. It never was. Some would disagree. But I've always thought it was fine if you have children with you. No, there's never been any such unwritten rule.
  10. It doesnt matter. He has a 4.13 ERA for the season as a setup guy on a team that already has 7 other All Stars. He was just booed off the mound at his home ballpark yesterday. I'm not saying Marmol doesn't have All Star caliber talent. It's just a really strange and awkward time to be named an All Star. Maybe this was Lou lobbying to Hurdle in an attempt to get Marmol's confidence up. Still really bizarre. That wouldn't surprise me at all. Reportedly, Lou lobbied Hurdle to get Z on the team... If true, then that means Lou and Larry think it's a confidence thing.
  11. It's not idiotic. It maybe dated, but it's not idiotic. I want players that are so competitive and care so much about winning that they always want the ball, that they'll fight to stay in the game. That said, I also want a manager that's smart enough to make the right moves when they need to be made, regardless of the players wanting to stay in the game.
  12. IIRC, there's a service in Colorado Springs called "Bobby Bonds Bail Bonds"
  13. can't take a joke annnnnnnnnnnnnd it's official, no sense of humor It was surgically removed, along with his...Nevermind, I forgot those jokes are forbidden around here.
  14. I noticed that Theriot has gotten on base every game he has gotten an at bat in by walk or hit so far this year except 10, and only three times since 21 May. Is there anyone else out there that's played in 90% of their teams games that has a lower number of games where they failed to get on base?
  15. So far so good. I saw "HR: N. Perez" and I freaked out and thought we signed Neifi under the radar or something. Thank God his name is Nelson Haha there's a J Jones there on the cubs too. :D And a soto and a sosa. Well, we know what our scouts are out there looking for...
  16. Hendry and Dempster go back a ways. If Hendry is around to offer a contract for next season, Dempster will be here. If the team is sold and we get a new GM, anything is fair game.
  17. St. Louis 52 42 .553 - Milwaukee 51 42 .548 ½ Florida 49 44 .527 2½ N.Y. Mets 49 44 .527 2½ Boston 55 40 .579 - Minnesota 52 41 .559 2 Oakland 51 42 .548 3 Everyone is assuming that either the Cards or Brew Crew will take the WC in the NL, and the WC in the AL will go to either Boston or TB, whoever doesn't win the division. Minnesota and Oakland are only 2 and 3 games behind in the WC race, respectively, and Florida and the Mets are only 2.5 out in the NL. We made up 3 games on the Rays for best record in baseball in the last week, the WC is alot more open and interesting than the media (and fans) are portraying it to be. My latest favorite for the NL is the Mets, they've got the talent to surge ahead of everyone else. If the Brewers pick up another reliable bullpen arm or two, they become my next favorite. My favorite in the AL is still either Boston or the recently-faltering Rays, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see the WC come out of one of the other divisions. The only division in baseball that I think is completely out of any WC race is the NL Worst.
  18. Tex is very, very good, but he's not quite on the same plane as the other few $20 mil hitters out there (ARod, Manny). He's maybe a $17-$18 mil per year hitter in my estimation. I think a 6/108 is about the best he's looking at. If he could play 3B or something else harder than 1B while hitting what he is hitting, then he'd probably be a $20+ guy.
  19. Fonzie can't play 2B. In his prime he would have made today's Jeff Kent look adequate at 2B. He was simply horrendous, a complete and total butcher at 2B. That's why Washington forced him to move, while knowing that he would be pissed and leave in the offseason anyways.
  20. That's about as inappropriate as I've seen in MLB. They should be penalized somehow, maybe lose a couple of first round draft picks or something.
  21. And yet, Fuld and Pierre have similar skillset. Fuld is a MUCH better defender, and Pierre is faster. Neither have power, nor should be starting. And yet, the Cubs traded three pitchers for Pierre, and refused to do anything with Fuld. Yeah, but Fuld plays CF, while Pierre plays leadoff. They needed a leadoff hitter, dude, not a base clogger like Fuld.
  22. mainly for betting on football... Am I the only one saying "so what?" http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10894841
  23. I did like the first one on the evil "Umperor."
