  1. ....green font? you don't think people have cheated in pretty much every era of the game? Players were using speed in the 70s, who knows what in the 80s. Steriods were just the latest fad 10 years ago, as far as I'm concerned. Ever since players started making big bucks, it's just gotten worse and worse. Some scientist in some lab is working on inventing the next great supplement that isn't a steroid and isn't HGH that will give its takers an unfair advantage over the non-takers.
  2. Maybe as of right now, but longevity is key. He needs to stay injury-free. How do we know that Pujols is clean? The real tragedy about all of this is you can't believe any player's stats. Either you're a fan of the sport or not. If you're not a fan, you don't believe anyone, and you kick MLB to the curb while cursing Selig for allowing the league to become a sham under his watch. If you are a fan, you remember the players you know cheated, and you forget about it with regards to any other player where no proof exists they ever did anything wrong. It's not fair to the guys who did stay clean to have that doubt over them when they've done nothing to bring that doubt upon themselves.
  3. This is my main issue with the whole "ARoid" controversy. Either SI is guilty of picking on ARod and not releasing the other names (unlikely) or someone with inside info leaked the one name (more likely). If I were ARod, I'd be taking SI to court to reveal their source. That is, if I were innocent. If he were standing up and maintaining his innocence, and decided to go the distance in clearing his name, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. But his silence is deafening. I think that this "source" is a pretty sleazy coward. There's no good reason I can think of to release ARods name and not the others. If there's really over 100, he surely can't be the only big-name guy out there. All of that said...if Pujol's name never gets definitively linked to steroids, does he then become the greatest hitter of this generation with ARod being disqualified?
  4. Do me a favor, and swear you'll never become a judge.
  5. I don't get this. The game has changed even more since Lou played. So what? Trammel retired in 96, Ryno in 97. I agree, I don't want to see him as the manager either, but that particular reason doesn't come close to making sense. Almost every manager not named Girardi wouldn't cut the mustard if you applied a similar criteria to them. I'd love to see Ryno as the bench coach or something like that though.
  6. True, and I'm sure that's part of it. But there have been offseasons before and it's never gotten this bad. Perhaps, but consecutive division titles mean some fans are now acting like spoiled brats, especially when discussing the relative merits (or lack thereof) of the moves Hendry has made in the offseason. I don't think that has anything to do with it. It's gotten progressively worse each year, regardless of how the season went. There's about a half dozen or so posters that drag the whole board down that need to be reigned in, but the mods won't do anything about it. Almost everyone would agree with that statement. But we'd all have different lists (granted, with a lot of overlap). Ahh let me add to the problems with this board now. One of the mods didn't like a post I made toward the original poster in the latest Sammy thread and deleted it. I can't take one swipe at someone asking for it in that thread, yet other posters can rack up thousands of posts that are nothing more than insults and not get edited? The mods on this board need to be pared down a bit if that's the case.

  8. Not really into anime here. How many anime posts do we need to lock this thread? I'm good for a few more.
  9. I'm not creeped out by the anime. I'm creeped out by ski. To be fair, your avatar is kind of creepy too...
  10. I thought that Coors stopped being the HR haven that it used to be since they started putting balls in the humidor...
  11. Quote from thread: I was also into Westbrook a bit. He just got hurt. I also liked Cliff Lee. You also loved Khalil Greene. LoveD?
  12. We already did that by depending on a injury prone pitchers like rich harden, Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly and trading for Kevin Gregg and Aaron Heilman. Meanwhile the Cards traded for the greatest SS ever. You don't know how close to true you are. Things could go very bad very quickly for the Cubs Harden pulls a Prior Z is a shell of himself after all the Dusty innings pile up Dempster becomes Dempster Lilly stays the same Kevin Gregg couldn't throw strikes last year and Lou hates relief pitchers who cannot throw strikes Marmol had a terrible winter in the Caribbean If Bradley goes down Fukudome moves back to RF and we have The Car Hopper and Facial Hair manning CF It's a worst case but it's not that far outside of the realm of possiblility Now do that for other teams too. Sure he could...but the problem is, that's not the worst case scenario. He forgot about Fontenot proving he is a platoon-guy (I'm not betting on him recreating a .900 OPS again), Aramis missing 30-40 games, and DLee continuing to show he's a #6 or 7 hitter instead of a #3 hitter. The only bad thing that could happen that I'm not really worried about happening is Z punching out his catcher again.
  13. So this can come true now? http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27656
  14. So, maybe give teams that lose a type A a sandwhich pick w/o having to offer arbitration. If they do offer arbitration, then they get the other teams pick and the sandwhich pick, like is already in place.
  15. Swisher makes alot of sense to us with some of our health/performance concerns in the OF. The Yanks won't eat enough of our payroll to make it fit. From Swisher's perspective, we don't exactly make alot of sense for him either, not that he has a vote as he's already under contract though...
  16. I say keep it. But also, add in a clause that says the compensation expires if the guy signs after the first day of ST.
  17. That's 5 DL stints. They all have to be in one year? Guys can stay on the DL for 20 or 30 days, whatever. That's not necessarily 5 DL stints. It could be one or two. 15 days is the minimum before you can bring a guy back off of the DL.
  18. What does the amount he paid have to do with his commitment to winning? Nothing. Too many people still equate size of payroll to commitment to winning. It's become kind of an outmoded idea, but one that lots of people still carry around. I guess watching lower payroll teams have success regularly just doesn't register. I think the sentiment has to do with the opposite scenario, where a lack of spending equates to a lack of committment. As far as our team goes, think of the 80s and 90s Cubs teams where the trib was making money hand over fist, yet they never would go after any high priced free agents, nor would they trade for any high-priced superstars. Nomar in 2004 was really the first time they went out after a premier player in a big trade, and Soriano was the first top-notch free agent they really pursued during the Tribs tenure.
  19. He's like everything else in life. You take the good with the bad.
  20. perhaps with the bad economy people have decided to cut obscenely-overpriced athletic wear out of their lives. Under Armour first came out they pretty much had the "market" to themselves with that line of clothing. Now "Nike" is pretty much worn through-out the clubhouses. As previously stated by somebody else, I to had some under armour shirts and they were terrible after a few washes. Is it me or does all athletic gear made of that nylonish material always stink like butt after a few wears? Every time I get a pair of warmups, or a lightweight jogging shirt, or anything after a few wears and washes it just smells like dirty gym clothes, no matter if it's been washed or not. Is there no technology to make that horrid stink go away? Wool is the most expensive, but it's the best. Warmest, longest-lasting, and doesn't ever smell bad. I have a few pair of wool workout shirts and pants. They were about $80/each, but well worth it, especially as an undergarment for skiing or for jogging when it's cold out. I hate wool. Too itchy. At least the stuff the Army gives you is. I never bought anything wool like that on my own.

As previously stated by somebody else, I to had some under armour shirts and they were terrible after a few washes. i didn't know anything about the bad quality. i wanted to get some of those tight but breathable shirts for hiking and biking this winter, and went to dick's sporting goods. the under armour shirts were like $40, but there were reebok shirts for basically half the price so i just bought those. I got some straight brown t-shirts of theirs in '04 when I went to Iraq the first time, and those held up great. I bought a bunch of regular shirts of theirs (also from Dicks) this last year, and they're all in such bad shape after just a few months I'll never wear them again. I think I got one from Reebok too for around half price. It's still in pretty good shape.
  22. I'd offer Sheets a one year contract with a modest player option for next year. If he doesn't throw much next year, he's got security for 2010. If he does, he can opt out and go for the bigger contract. If he does leave instead of resigning with us, we get the draft pick back (assuming he'd still be at least a type B after the 2009 season if he doesn't pitch much...). I don't see too many teams willing to offer him multiple years after how he ended the season.
  23. Innocent until proven guilty. Just ask Rogers Clemens and Rod Blagojevich. Except no one has ever made a legitimate case against Sosa except "He had muscles and hit a lot of homers and spoke Spanish in front of Congressmen!" And he's a caught cheater in an era where it was the most common form of cheating. And Joe Morgan cheated in the same way that Sammy did. Am I the only one who thinks Sammy is dim enough that his story about that bat really was plausible? Let's face it...love him or hate him, he wasn't the sharpest tack in the box.
