  1. 12 starts until he's booed off the mound and pulls a Pavano on them...
  2. the public matters not to anyone involvedI don't think anyone means that...but everyone does need to understand they're going through a negotiation process, and what we're hearing right now is what should be expected if we were very close to making a deal under these circumstances.
  3. this is why i've been saying that i'm worried about hendry and lou's obsession with adding a pricy lh bat like ibanez/abreu. to add one of those guys and peavy, he pretty much has to trade marquis. i think he's worried about the possibility of trading for peavy, getting stuck with marquis, and then not having enough money to get that bat. I know that's what he's worried about and I think it's stupid. If he could get rid of Sammy Sosa and Todd Hundley, he can get rid of Jason Marquis. If you want to get rid of someone enough, you can do it. Hendry has proven it himself. if somebody like raul ibanez ends up costing the cubs peavy this would be the most disastrous offseason ever Agreed. If Lou really is willing to throw away one of the best pitchers in the game over an aging outfielder who will probably be broken down by the last year of his contract, he deserves to have his MOY award revoked. You mean Hendry and his EOY award? Lou is the one demanding the LH bat, and its not like any of the avilable are steller. I know Hendry is the one who makes the decision, but Im sure Lou has some say in the matter. I think you're taking what Lou says way too seriously.

  5. So I guess its safe to say that if we didnt do the Dempster deal this would be a done deal by now. If this deal doesnt go down, Dempster better have 4 amazing years. Seriously, the fact that every other free agent pitcher is still out there suggests that Jim could have afforded to wait a bit on the Demp deal. No, I don't think that's safe to say. Why would Hendry agree to something now and not see if he can whittle him down over the next two days? He isn't competing against any other teams in these negotiations, and time is on his side. Does everyone want Hendry to give up more than he has to just so we can have Peavy on the roster a couple of extra post-season days? If the reason that theyre having trouble closing this is due to money, particularly 5 million dollars, than yes, if we hadnt given Dempster 10 mil a year or whatever, there wouldnt be a problem here. I doubt that's the holdup. That's the excuse that's being floated to gain leverage in the negotiations. We don't know for sure they are having problems closing this out.

  7. That depends…are you encouraged when a woman hits on you at the bar, then starts making out with your friend, then tells you she likes you? There's one of two situations here...either they're really closer or they're cooling off. If they're closer, you're going to get two stories...those with inside information sharing the truth, then the "insiders" whose job it is to leak what the organization wants leaked. They don't want SD to know they're close, hoping they'll lower their demands, so they "leak" that they're cooling off. On the other hand, if they really are cooling off, they wouldn't be feeding the false news and there wouldn't be conflicting reports from our sides. Everyone seems to be forgetting what the Cubs should be saying if the negotiations are going their way, rather than what they want them to say.
  8. Am I the only one who finds the contradicting reports not only to be expected, but to be encouraging?
  9. if you have everybody on ignore, what is the point of even coming here? Don't you get it? The more people you have on your ignore list, the better you are! That's why you have to tell the whole forum how many or who you have on there at least 3 times a week in order to retain your "big man" status. Duh. Get with the program. Dexter...did you get that memo? http://rant.leemcgurren.com/rant/media/lumbergh.jpg
  10. update: people still don't like you more later More later? I think that pretty well sums it up. It's amazing how a guy who was banned for mocking the site then let back in on probation is allowed to openly mock the rest of the board by bragging how he has most of it on ignore. He should have that probation revoked. Oh, and if he's got the time to add 40 pages of foes, he can take his time and read the damned thread. Everyone else stop giving him summaries. Take your righteous indignation and try to direct it at people who might care what you think. I'll follow your example. I'm not the one taking shots at the majority of the board with no provocation.
  11. I'm sure Riccardi would beg to differ...

I've been bookmarking straight to the forum.

  14. Towers has said that it's all up to Jim now from his quotes yesterday and today, What's keeping him from pulling the trigger and being hesitant? Towers seems to want to get this done asap. Usually Hendry is real quick when it comes to getting a caliber player such as Peavy. What does Hendry risk loosing out on by waiting a couple of days? The price can only come down, he's not competing against anyone, so the price isn't going to go up. I'm not putting too much stock into anything until after the last day of the meetings. If both sides are somewhat versed in basic negotiation practices, the Padres people (Towers included) should be saying whatever they need to say to put pressure on Hendry to make a deal now that they've got what they feels is an acceptable framework together. Hendry should be having his people leak to the media that he's hesitant and the price is too high, and see if Towers comes down. What normally would happen in a deal for someone like Peavy is you're competing against other teams, and there may be a good reason to pull the trigger quickly. Hendry is in the drivers seat, and time is on his side. Like I said in an earlier post, he is playing this one absolutely right.
  15. So much for the 5/75. If the Padres deal Peavy, I think this makes it more likely they bring Hoffman back.
  16. Considering that it's day 2 of the winter meetings, they have a couple of days left, Towers only said he wants "progress" before they go home...why should Hendry accept that offer today? We now know of at least one acceptable package that the Padres would take. That puts Towers at a disadvantage...you know it won't get any more expensive. The only things that can happen is either the package gets cheaper, or they keep Peavy. Hendry has at least two days to see if that package is Towers bottom line or not. It's not like Towers can trade Peavy to anyone else on short notice if we don't take it. Hendry deserves a little slack on this one. From a negotiation standpoint, he's playing it right.
  17. There isn't anyone who would be dumb to trade. Trading for less value than a guy is worth is dumb, not just trading him in the first place.Trading Soto would be dumb. Trading Z would be dumb. Any trade that would weaken your ball club would be dumb. Value is only part of the equation. Would trading Soto for Martin, Ethier, Kershaw and Kemp be dumb? What makes it dumb is the return. Not who you're giving up.

  19. Include him going to Philly with DeRo and get back Utley. =P~ Maybe throw in Theriot too and get Rollins. Okay, I'll stop dreaming now...
  20. Sounds like nobodys more pumped tah Jake Sounds like Jake may have been drinking... Im pretty sure ELCABALLO45 mentioned this like 10 posts before this... and no one thought it was funny then... I am now sure that ELCABALLO45 likes to refer to himself in the 3rd person Haha, have you ever actually tried to do that in real life? You feel really stupid. But seriously, Jake Peavy sitting at a bar singing go cubs go, is kinda funny. Jake Peavy sitting in a bar...$10 bucks Jake Peavy sitting in a bar singing "Go Cubs Go" drunk...$63,000,000 Jake Peavy sitting in a bar singing "Go Cubs Go" drunk with Roy Oswalt...priceless.
  21. I believe it the moment I see Peavy in a Cubs hat at the press conference. Too many "done deals" have turned out to not be so done after all. Agreed, but it is interesting when something like this actually makes it onto an MLB.com page of all sights...
  22. DeRosa, Pie, Marquis, and Marshall? Done, done, and done (and I wound't mind Dunn either). Brian Roberts?
