  1. I'd prefer to see Ronny hitting leadoff. I think that is where his future is at in the Majors, assuming he pans out and becomes a decent everyday player in the league.
  2. from the trib. Something stinks. There is no way CP is the starting RF for this team. This is Hendry's way of saying "we're not giving him away for scraps." I think it's a little late for that, though. As of the end of the '05 season, Corey officially became one of Dusty's type of ball players. He swings at everything, no strike zone judgement, doesn't clog the bases by walking, has decent power, and the dude can catch the ball. I think Dusty is behind trying to bring him back, so he can hit right behind Neifi in the lineup.
  3. The Rule Cinco Draft is sure fun! [showoff] How about the Rule "O" draft? (Korean) Or the Rule Cinq? (French) Or the Rule Nam? (Vietnamese) That's all the languages I can count in. [/showoff]
  4. Tejada making like his remarks were misconstrued makes him seem like a better employee, and may make more teams interested in him as well. That doesn't make sense to me. If a team inquired about Tejada and found he was still available, wouldn't they know that his remarks were just a ploy? Its about the desperation of the club that goes to the value you can expect in return. It has a very real effect on negotiations. But how is another team going to value Tejada more when they know that his comments were just for show? Some guys will come out and trash the organization and try to force a trade. Other teams may wonder what will the guy say if he sours on the new team. Other guys will be act a little classier, which tells other would-be suiters that if he sours on them too, he won't trash them in the media and create alot of bad PR, so he's a safer bet, PR-wise, to make a move for. Teams definitely consider the PR impact of their acquisitions.
  5. Depends on who is doing the signing. If someone like, say, the Cardinals sign Clemens, he'd very likely put up one of the greatest single seasons by a pitcher in the history of baseball, with something like maybe 30 wins. However, if we signed him, his age would finally catch up, and we'd likely have Maddux part deux. But on the other hand, if we signed Burnett, his arm would probably fall off within a year, then we'd be stuck with the 5 year contract. How about signing neither? Let them both go to the AL where at least they can't impact us too much.

  7. That's about right. He's worth about 1.25 mil a year more than the venerable Neifi Perez. :^o
  8. Maybe I'm naive, maybe I never learn. But I would insist on holding back on sending them Guzman in the deal. I think this is the year he puts his arm problems behind him.
  9. Yeah, but it's not like he asked for that NTC clause to stay in AZ. If you recall, he got that from the Dodgers, and was less than enthused about going to Arizona. As someone else mentioned, he's from around the Chicago area, I don't think he'd put up too much resistance to come to Chicago.
  10. Except that Wilson is 9 years younger. Plus all the Lincoln Park Trixies at Wrigley will enjoy is flowing golden locks. Honestly, he would be a good pick up for the Cubs as long as Mabry subs for him about once a week. I think you're getting Wrigley confused with Cell One Ball Park... :D
  11. What does it say about what the Phils are doing? I'm actually surprised they traded Padilla considering when healthy he is probably their best pitcher. I don't know exactly what it does say possibly rebuild a bit? who knows. I don't think Padilla was their best pitcher. He's basically and older Jerome Williams. None of his peripherals suggest he's bound to break out. He's got WHIP issues, a rather low K/9, and while he gives up more ground balls than fly balls, it's not a whole lot more and he is susceptible to the HR. Going from Philly to Texas isn't going to help things either. Myers and Lieber are better than Padilla, whose 14 win seasons in 2002 and 2003 will probably inflate his arbitration salary. I don't think those seasons will help his arbitration case. I thought they looked at the last two seasons when it came to arbitration, just like they only use the last two seasons when determining the type of FA a player is. I could be wrong...
  12. Does anyone else think the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft is stupid? If an organization drafts a guy out of high school, and three years later he's in high A, maybe AA, they shouldn't have to worry about putting him on the 40 man roster or risk losing him. They spent the time and resources developing him. It just seems to me that this is an extremely stupid concept, and it penalizes teams that research, scout, and draft better than those that don't.
  13. How about Noodles (Pierre, for his arm...) and Mayberry?
  14. It doesn't matter how good you are, you'll always have your detractors. Sammy had his during his best 4-5 years. Jordan had them when he was winning championships. Bonds has always had them. I wouldn't put too much weight into the fact that some people may not think that much of him. I'd actually kind of expect it.
  15. Rusch has been much better the last two years than he was previously. What was he, like 1-16 before he came to us? You're trying awfully hard to diminish any improvement made by any of our pitchers for the sake of disparaging Rothschild. He may not be perfect, and he may not have the answer for every pitcher out there (but neither did Mazzone), but he's generally considered as one of the better pitching coaches in the game by many people associated with the game. I think you need to be a little more open-minded.
  16. Not funny, man. Seriously, not funny.... I'm guessing he signs with the Yanks to a $1 or $2 mil contract as a 4th OFer.
  17. With that in mind, I don't think there's much of a chance of him going to Boston. If I understand correctly, he still harbors a grudge against Boston for giving up on him.
  18. Walker is worth more than that, but I wouldn't mind aquiring Hudson...He regressed last year, but he put up a .340 OBP in '04. He's only 27, and shouldn't make much more than 750K to a mil next year, and has a couple of years until he's FA eligible, so he'd be easy to flip to another team if something better came along.
  19. I can't understand why Baltimore would do that trade. Everett ranks below Neifi and Alex Gonzalez in VORP...i.e. he's terrible. They could pluck any average AAA SS and get comparable production. So in reality, the trade is Tejada for Lidge. Lidge is a very good closer, but Tejada is such a rare quantity, you don't give him up for just a closer. Baltimore fans should boycott the next season if they took that deal.
  20. We're overpaying in both deals.
  21. What could they offer them? If I were Tim Purpura, I would offer them Brad Lidge and Adam Everett. The Astros are in dire need of a middle-of-the-order hitter. They have no one in-house that even has a chance of filling that role. Lidge is outstanding, but they could slide Wheeler or Qualls into the closer's role and probably still be pretty good there. They could sign any league average SS via FA and do better than Everett (i.e. Alex Gonzalez would be an upgrade over Everett, and is actually a little younger than Everett), so they're really just trading Tejada for a very good closer. They'd have to overwhelm them (i.e. overpay) with young arms as they can't offer anything to fill SS. Funny fact...looking at Alex Gonzalez's (former Marlin) page on Baseball reference, the most similar batter by age 28 is....Alex Gonzalez (our former gutless choking dog).
  22. Offtopic...just wondering...what's up with the N Korean theme? I was watching Team America a few weeks ago and decided North Korea was really cool. LOL
  23. What could they offer them? Quality young pitching and plenty of it! So can we, but we can also fill the hole that would be opened at SS. Do they have any high-celiing SS prospects available in their system? I thought they had a pretty young SS that started in the World Series for them last year...didn't they? He's not that young, he'll be 29 before the season starts, and has yet to post an OBP over .320 or a slg over .400. Career OPS is .670, .654 last year. He's above average defensively, but he'll never be confused with a gold glover. His VORP rated below Neifi Perez and Jack Wilson. I don't know why Baltimore would have the least amount of interest in him. edit: Just a funny fact...while reviewing the VORP rankings, Miguel Olivo was the worst in the majors with a negative 12.8 The second worst rated player by VORP in baseball? Corey Patterson, at -10.6. We all knew he had a bad year, but I didn't realize it was that bad when measured against the rest of MLB.
