  1. I hope he doesn't even pass Ruth, or break 700 at all.
  2. Reds release Josh Hancock for being overweight... http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9247096 I like this train of thought...make these guys earn their ridiculous salaries...
  3. No, not all of the media's. About 95% of it (or more)...
  4. When you have millions of fans like we do, you're going to get a few nuts for fans like Ronny Woo Woo. I'm sure there's a small percentage of those that would camp out to catch the game for free.
  5. The Hundley trade was an offseason trade, wasn't it? I don't recall. If not, then it certainly merits making the "fleecing" list.
  6. You might be able to add Z and Prior to that, depending on if they get multiyear deals in ST or not...(they won't be FA eligible, but it would be a contract year nonetheless).
  7. I gotta agree with Tim...I think it all depends on him showing up to camp in good shape and about 220 or less. If he does, I think he controls his own destiny, and Rusch will be the swing man. The question I'm most interested in, is what happens if Guzman is healthy (HUGE if, I know...) and dominant to begin the season? If he's lights out at ST, I think he goes to AAA. But how long will they keep him in AAA if he continues being lights out? Call me naive, but I think he makes his debut this year. Someone will have to be traded to make room for him.
  8. Could it be that he is a liability defensively, which is why he's progressively been moved to positions that are increasingly easier to field? (i.e. wasn't good enough to stick at 3rd or OF)? He's not pretty at 1B either. That being said, I'd still love him on my team...I think his bat by far and away makes up for any defensive deficiencies he has at 1st.
  9. I don't see any connection between arbitration (or the lack thereof) and the quality of teams that have been fielded since '94. They went to arbitration quite a bit before then, and didn't have any better results. By and large, whenever there is someone that they might go to arbitration with and they settle before the date, I can't say they've squandered resources in doing so. The problem isn't with their arbitration approach, their problem is overpaying for mediocre free agents (or FA eligible players). This offseason, it has been a case of that (Perez, Rusch), and of not working to pull of the big move (RF) when all of the stars were aligned (free payroll, 40 man roster space, prospects in the minors, etc...) to make a big move and seriously improve the team.
  10. A) Rusch is a weaker link than Wuertz. B) Rusch is going to be in the starting rotation to begin the season. C) 7 relievers is a big possibility, especially since they probably don't even have 6 competent bench players going to camp. D) None of those other relievers is a consistently effective enough pitcher to count Wuertz as the odd man out. I wouldn't be surprised for them to start the season: SP Zambrano Prior Maddux Rusch Williams RP Dempster Eyre Howry Ohman Williamson Wuertz Wellemeyer When Wood is ready they would have to make a tough decision since Wellemeyer I believe is out of options and it would be a shame to lose him for nothing. I think Welly will be traded for a PTBNL before ST ends. I also think they like Novoa better than Welly. I don't look for much from him this year, but I think he's going to turn into a pretty good reliever over the next 2-3 years. Hopefully it will happen before we trade him for something as he's excess in our pen.
  11. I think it's more that a healthy Williamson > Wuertz. I don't think anyone's really "down" on Wuertz. We have a surplus in the pen right now, and Wuertz is right on the fringe. It's a good thing. The two posters I replied to said "I have zero confidence in Novoa or Wuertz," and the other "i agree. wuertz and novoa are the weak links." If that's not down on Wuertz, I don't know what is. I agree though, that a healthy Williamson is tough to beat. If both of those two guys have the type of years I think they're capable of behind Howry, Eyre, and Dempster, then we could have the best pen we've ever had.
  12. i agree. wuertz and novoa are the weak links, and one or both will not be with the big club for most of this season. z prior wood maddux williams ohman williamson rusch howry eyre dempster we have way too many pitchers. when miller comes back, it'll be a log jam. look for someone to get moved, probably williams. we could probably package williams, novoa and wuertz for something of value. I don't understand why either of you are down on Wuertz. This is only his second year working out of the pen, and he logged 75 appearances, and managed a 3.81 ERA. He actually got better in the second half, where he put up a .192 BAA and a .319 over 32 appearances (where he had a .243 BAA and a 4.38 ERA over 43 appearances in the first half, suggesting maybe he was a little overused early on). His walk rate was improved in the second half (16 BBs over 36.2 innings, vs 24 in 39 innings before the break). He had a great second half and ended the year strong (.109 BAA in Sep and Oct). I thought he made alot of strides last year. I'm looking for him to have a monster year out of the pen this year. It seemed obvious to me that last year he finally adjusted to the role (remember, he was a starter in the minors until '04) and was gaining alot of confidence in his stuff.
  13. You mean he was a great catcher at one time? I always considered him one of the absolute worst catchers at calling a game and handling a staff, ever. I also don't recall him ever really being better than average at throwing out runners either. This is a bad move for SD.
  14. Considering we are talking SI, I was impressed that they got the 10 part right myself...
  15. How about the Tampa Independent Leaguers? Tampa T-ballers? Tampa Teabaggers? Tampa Tonka Truckers? Tampa Taffy Tokers?
  16. I wonder if the better pen would have anything to do with it...no excuse for Dusty letting him go over 6 innings next year...
  17. I think he's saying that Jones and Pierre should have been better than they were last year, that they had bad luck. Their BABIP indicates that their stats should have been better, thus, they should improve this year. I hope so. Pierre is capable of putting up a .370 OBP or better, which we've seen. Jones has stated that he was trying to pull the ball too much instead of spreading it around, which could contribute to a lower BABIP. I hope he's right, I'm not 100% I buy it.
  18. No, he writes for Maxim online. Even lamer. Our offseason did suck, though. I'm not as down on our offseason as most people. We did improve the bullpen, no doubt about it. If Baker is smart enough (big if, I know, I know...) to not start Neifi and he gives RonnyC his atbats, the IF will be improved, and (sadly enough), the OF will be better too (only because it was sooo bad to begin with). Defense all around should be improved. I like the flier on Wade Miller. He's like a second Kerry Wood. If we can have either one healthy at any given time (other than maybe the first month), we're in good shape with the rotation. The bench is the only area where I don't think we improved. However, I don't give Hendry high marks, even though we improved in most areas. He had sooo many pieces fall into place at the right time to have a really big offseason as far as resources and the roster goes, there's no excuse for failing to bring in at least one major impact player that would have upgraded the offense. He squandered his big opportunity to have the killer offseason that he could have had. Improved in most areas, but failed to live up to potential. I personally give him a C or a C+ for the offseason.
  19. I agree. When Hairston mentioned working out with Olympic sprinters this winter....I like Todd Walker don't get me wrong, but I think Hairston might be the best #2 hitter and 2B. A .370 OBP from Hairston wouldn't be unprecedented either...
  20. If the Cards signed him, of course he'd put up a WHIP around 1.1 with a sub 3.00 ERA with either 25-30 starts or 60+ appearances out of the pen...
  21. Lugo's mediocre, but he's "proven"? Huh? If mediocrity is what you're striving for, why not give Ronny a chance? Yea soul, sorry man, but that sounded REALLY dusty like. He's "Proven"? Proven wife-beater, that is...
  22. I'm not happy with some of the moves Hendry made (primarily Jones and Neifi), but I am happy that he hasn't made several moves that apparently were on the table (Prior for Tejada or Abreau, Ronny C + whoever for Lugo, etc...). I don't like the idea of sacrificing pitching for offense. Apparently, Jim doesn't either, nor does he buy into the bogus theory that Prior is injury prone.
  23. Maybe so, but the fact that he needs the scope indicates there could be an underlying problem that could resurface later.
  24. apparently it's not too bad, but still...makes you wonder if Hendry's lucky that the Dodgers and Ned Colletti are a bunch of overpaying idiots... edit...oops...forgot the link... http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9154775
  25. I don't think so. I think most people's beef with Dusty surrounds the following 3 main issues: 1) horrible in game management 2) abusing pitchers 3) preference to play subpar veterans while promising prospects lose development time riding the pine. Corey is the exception to the rule in point #3, and the other two don't really impact his situation. Some people think Dusty undervalues the walk, but I don't attribute Corey's regression the last couple of years to that. Corey was better in '03, and has been in a downhill slide. On the other hand, he's proven he can do better than he has and he's still only 25, so maybe a new coach could get through to him yet. Tough call, and good point.
