How to handle the Marmol situation?
MustangMike replied to Little Slide Rooter's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
If that's the case then he can't handle the pressure...the playoffs will not be a good place for him. I'm hoping he's just in a dead arm phase or missing his spots or something simple. How do you go from dominating everyone to getting shalacked like your latroy hawkins. -
To me it made no sense to a new owner not to own the stadium with the team....espeically Wrigley field. I do wonder, as with buying a house that "need repair", do you get a little discount on the price knowing you have to make major changes? I doubt they get that lower price, but I was just wondering if that would be possible. If I had the money, i wouldn't buy the cubs without Wrigley, so I hope this makes the sale quicker. If/When the "redo" wrigley, have there been any ideas on how they would do it and the main things they would add to this new grandstand? Parking, skyboxes, more seats, ect?

Lou Pinella, What the hell are you doing?
MustangMike replied to Keener98's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
The only one of these I really take any umbrage with is #3. Yes, Theriot was handed the job, but he has certainly earned keeping his spot thus far. Lou hasn't hesitated in most cases to yank a guy if he's not getting the job done. I would certainly like to see Cedeno getting more ABs, but I can't really complain about Theriot so far except for the stupid SB attempts. Oh, and #8 as well. But only because Fox shouldn't be getting any appearances because he shouldn't be on the roster. What has Wuertz done to keep his job this year, walk everyone in sight? I don't mind Wuertz disapearing, I don't like Marshall getting the shaft, espeically since he's done everything he's asked to be done of him. I think Hill will be back, they are tying to prove a point to him...I think. -
This is such a true fact, at yet I'm torn on this issue. I love marmol coming in the 7th or 8th inning when the lead is close or runners are on, because he shuts them down. I wouldn't want wood coming in with a few runners already on, beause if he's wild, its going to open the door. On the other hand, someones like Marino Rivera is a great closer, but he'd be just as good in the 8th inning wouldn't he? But isn't he more valuable to the yankees as a closer? Why is the shutdown guy usually in he 9th? I guess, at this point, its not broke, so don't fix it...and I'm fine with that.

Well, i'll tell you one thing, there are a ton of people wearing them at the game on sunday. My first impression of the headband wasn't a bad thing at all, i thought it was a funny little "tribute" , for lack of a better term, to our new favorite cub. Although, i don't consider myself part of the PC police at all, the shirt was a no-doubt "red flag" when i saw it, and it disapointed me. Racial comments do not equal a "Cardinals Suck" shirt any any way, not even close.

I don't think they are considered, nor should they be considered, journalists. They are entertainment. I didn't say he was a journalist, i believe the announcer should try to be as unbiased as possible. I realize an announcer that follows a team day in and day out have the biases, but its their job to try to avoid that. Not only did Mary miss that boat, he went as far to insult an entire fan base and tie the fan base to the organizational problems. You'd think cub fans would get some credit for being die hard for a team that doesn't win.
-
I thought the headbands were funny, but I didn't nkow they said the "horry kow" thing on it...I almost bought one yesterday. I don't think they all have that on them, the one i looked at didn't have it. I remember why wife asking me, "do you think he thinks that's offensive" to the headbands, its a good question I suppose. I didn't know the answer, but if some american was playing in japan and everyone had cowboy hats on or something, would you be offended?
-
It's offensive to him, and no matter what anyone thinks, the cubs need to come down hard on this. Can you ban a shirt from Wrigley like they do at Great America and in schools? I wouldn't see why not. They certainly can. It's private property so they can ban whatever the heck they want. I'm interested to see if we're told anything about it in the upcoming games. Well, i sure hope they do ban that shirt then...and the headband for that matter that says the same thing. I guess you turn people away or make them cover it up, not sure what other sites do to prevent people from wearing it. Also, i guess its an ejection if you have it on in the game.

The rant was unprofessional at the very least. Sport casters are suppose to be unbiased, and to say such things in a rant like that is wrong to me. I don't disagree that throwing balls on the field is wrong, dumping a beer is wrong, i think its awful and needs to be punished at the game quickly and serverly. I was at the game yesterday, and for the vast majority of the people I saw around me, everyon was watching the game and enjoying the day. The bleachers are rowdy, and there are bad apples, but I really didn't see anything different at the cubs game than I did at the sox game the week before. Kids being kids...and if its out of control, then security needs to step up. You can define a fan base by a few people's actions. You also can tie together a fan base and the teams success, they have nothing to do with one another, that was a stupid comment.

Has anyone else started to soften up to the DH?
MustangMike replied to inari's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I'd like both leagues to have the same rules, its the same sport after all...and they play eachother during the year in games that count. I don't like the DH, i think if you play you should have to play defense and offense, that's the game. I highly doubt they'll take the DH though away from the AL. I'd like it also to be even so everyone can stop using excuses as to why one league is better than the other...if everything is the same except talent then its a good debate. -
why not? Well I'm no scout, but I don't believe he has the range for it. He does have a nice arm though. he's played there in 108 games POS GP GS INN TC PO A E DP FPCT RF ZR 1B 12 6 67.2 58 56 1 1 12 0.983 7.7 0.875 2B 209 183 1579.1 868 355 499 14 115 0.984 4.87 0.847 3B 184 157 1420.1 436 85 329 22 21 0.95 2.62 0.767 SS 138 79 829.2 458 149 297 12 66 0.974 4.84 0.838 LF 14 9 87 13 12 1 0 0 1 1.34 0.857 RF 112 94 851.2 209 202 6 1 1 0.995 2.2 0.878

That's the dividing line. I think a lot of us ultimately see him in the same area as guys like Macias or Neifi. From that perspective, it's baffling as to how anyone can "like him" as a baseball player, especially since there's little to seperate them from him, and the charges that they were "lazy" or that they were "stupid" seems nonsensical as if Theriot is some shining example of the opposite type of player. I don't think anyone here actually dislikes the guy as a person, but as a starting player there's mountains of tangible problems to dislike or be frustrated over. No, it's not his fault that he's starting, but that doesn't mean anyone has to appreciate him in that role or the negligble big league skills/talent he brings with him. Nobody is rooting for him to do poorly...it's just terribly unlikely he'll be anything but poor. Yeah, that does seem to be the dividing line. I don't believe him to be a star, but if he can do the .280 average with some stolen bases and good defense, I'm fine with him on the team. I guess I dont' seem him as a liability like I did for Macias and Perez. I think Cendeno will get his cracks at it as well, but I dont' see other options right now. DeRosa can't play there. I'm more worried about the team as a whole, why is no one hitting? I will agree with one complaint on this board, I'd rather have Riot hit 8th or even 9th. The lineup I'm confused with right now.
-
I like Theriot as well, and if he hits 8th that's fine with me. I don't know why he's the scapegoat right now, I don't see Mr. 136 Million Dollar man with a single hit. I guess its cause he's not leading off? How about our "#2" pitcher giving up 5 runs? I'd like to think about why we lost, and it wasn't all on Theriot, not even close. Theriot takes heat because he isn't good, but the GM and manager screwed up by giving him the role he's currently in. Is that fair? Maybe not, but if I went out there and pitched, I would expect people to be really pissed, because I've done nothing to deserve the job and shouldn't be there. It has nothing to do with an 0-2 start. Theriot isn't the scapegoat for the first two games. It's completely dishonest to pretend that's the motivation behind the so-called anti Theriot talk. Most Cubs fans want the Cubs to field the best possible team, and they know Jim Hendry has done a poor job doing that. Ryan Theriot is currently the most glaring example of that failure, and is therefore going to take heat for it. How hard he tries is meaningless. This isn't little league, it's professional baseball with the expectations that come along with people paying to watch professionals. So JH not getting another SS to replace Theriot is Theriot's fault? Does everyone believe that Theriot at SS is going to cause the cubs not to win? I don't have the stats in front of me play-off wise, but I remember the big hitters in the line-up were the culprits for our playoff loss. I don't deem Theriot as equal to Macias or Perez, which it seems like a lot of people do think that. I guess i always like Theriot, so maybe that's why I'm having a hard time with all this hate. I thought people liked him on this board. Would Cedeno be better, I'd be ok with seeing who does better.

4/2 Brewers (Suppan) vs Cubs (Lilly) 1:20 pm CSN
MustangMike replied to Andy's topic in Fred Hornkohl Game Thread Forum
Wow, haven't been on the board in awhile, everyone hates Theriot now? he's the new macias? -
is it better to have 2 IF backup players than 2 outfield backup players? I understand that you don't really want to platoon Fukadome, but chances are they are going to platoon pie so Johnson will get some plate apperances. What I worry about is the health of Soriano and the consistancy of the other two outfielders, especially Pie. If one goes down, you need another outfield...and I'm thikning about Soriano. I'd rather have Murton on this team as the the first bat off the bench than Cedeno. I don't see Cedeno as a good PH off the bench, and you have fontenot as a backup to give derosa or theriort a day off. If someone in the outfield gets hurt, then you call up cedeno, but it seems to me having a bench with Murton over Cedeno is the smart choice.

Lou on Gallagher and others
MustangMike replied to Sweet Swinging Billy's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
Maybe its just talk, but it doesn't sound like it. What kind of message does this send to the young guys? Hell, don't even bother trying, you don't even have a chance. Its not like the lineup if full of Nolan Ryan's, i mean we are talking Leiber, Dempster, and friggn' sean marshall. This bothers me. -
I'm a big fan of the white and the blue jersey designs in this post. My favorite is still the normal pin-stripe home jersey at home, that should be a staple 95% of the time, with maybe an alternate white as shown on a scattered sundays or something. What I don't like is grey jerseys, I've always hated them. All I think is the cubs are blue and red and white, not GREY. I know grey is a traditional road jersey, but I really don't like the grey unis. I'd much prefer blue on the road.
-
I don't hate pie, but if he returns a bedard i'd be fine with that. Add him to Z and Lilly along with HIll and that's a rotation I feel good about. I'm interested in Pie's growth, but it would be nice to see the cubs "sell high" for once.
-
What I don't understand is why Lou messed with the lineup. I heard his reason, but why mess with what worked all of septemeber. I feel like he overmanaged that game...although I don't believe its the sole reason they lost, they couldn't string 2 hits together.
-
i took this as its easier to get up for a game when it means something. Noo one likes playing for a loser. I see what you mean, but i really don't see this as a bad thing, i think its human nature.
