  1. Soler has 10 HR in 95 AAA PA but was abysmal in his MLB stint this year. Looking like a 4A player but may be turning the corner.
  2. I know that in general we've always needed thousands of innings to get a clear picture for a fielder but I feel like over the last couple years people have been much more comfortable citing SSS in those metrics. How many do you think will give us enough of a sample?
  3. As much as I want auto umps and 100% accuracy on balls and strikes, wouldn't that pretty much kill a pitcher, like, Hendricks, for example, by forcing him to catch more plate? Take away those nebulous edges and those finesse pitchers would become extinct, it seems to me. I go back and forth on it. I also love when a catcher can steal strikes, and that wouldn't even be necessary anymore with auto zone tech.
  4. What do you guys think of Almora's defense as the metrics have seen it? Is he simply too slow? Is it his positioning that needs tweaking? Only 274 innings in CF this year but -3 DRS and -13 UZR/150. I would have bought that he'd actually be average because he is really slow. But I'm surprised at how poorly he's graded.
  5. Yeah I didn't really mind the Yankees during their mid-90s dominance but then they just started buying the top 2 FA seemingly every year and just seemed like a squad of mercenaries. This Yankee team reminds me a lot of our 2015 squad. They've arrived a year too early in a lot of minds but they are for real and I'm sure they will make a couple big splashes at the deadline to fortify the pitching. They have a team wRC+ of 146 this month. 6 hitters well over 150 and 2 of those over 230. horsefeathering insane.
  6. I still contend that the biggest issues contributing to the offensive woes is our undying love for pulling the ball and making it probably as easy as we can for defenses to position themselves properly and take away several would-be hits every game. It's obviously not an exact science but when you know the team is going to mostly pull or stay up the middle you take a lot of the guesswork out. Obviously you lose a lot of hits to pull-side, but also many up the middle as well. This, combined with our decreasing authoritative contact has really brought our BABIP down. I know that you mentioned last year our EV was nothing to write home about; nobody in the top 100. But I think this year it hit such a low that we have to acknowledge it as a problem. Just not enough truly hard contact. A ton of the mushy-middle. Not enough line drives. I feel like the guys are about to go on a tear. June has been very solid. These two things are generally mutually exclusive. There were 4 opposite field hits in the 9th, and only La Stella's was over 85 mph exit velocity. That's true. Only a select number of hitters can merge the 2. But our hitters certainly need to work with what the pitchers give more, and that 9th inning was exactly what I'd like to see a lot more of.
  7. Judge has a 380 ISO A rookie has the best OPS in baseball. He's in line for a Triple Crown. Say what you will about RBI but this season from a rookie is incredible. I hope he keeps it up. I know he's a Yankee and I never pull for them but this is historical stuff what he's doing. Gotta admire it.
  8. Some really good stuff. A lot of the areas we've struggled in, that We Got the Whole 9 has mentioned... we did those things well. They were legit hits. Crisp line drives. The 6 hits were all between 0-20° launch angle. Four of them went the other way. Really good to see. 9. Hopefully we get one of those hometown kid returns to sack the city type of series out of Happ
  10. Haven't seen this posted anywhere but there's heavy speculation the Cubs will sign 17 y/o RHP from Mexico League, Florencio Serrano. Sits low 90's, Badler says his curve could be plus in the future. I'm sure most of you here already know, but just in case, if some don't - Mexican League teams normally take 75% of bonuses and MLB only counts the amount actually going to the player against the cap, so we can offer 1.2m, and it appears that should be enough, while staying within our 300K max.
  11. TLS probably would out-produce him at the plate and probably should be up. What the offense desperately needs is more hitters who can handle RHP and Happ has done that much better than most of the guys.
  12. I kinda don't like how you're so calm saying this terrible, terrible thing. Painful year we've had
  13. http://www.mtv.co.uk/sites/default/files/styles/image-w-760-scale/public/mtv_uk/galleries/large/2016/10/05/comeagain.gif?itok=u5MAOyYQ It's not enough to push him out of lineup consideration. There's several top 60 hitters this year with K rates around 30%. Were people hollering for Bryant and Schwarber to be demoted when they were rocking 30% K rates in 2015?
  14. At this point in the season, you have enough of a sample to play the guys who are producing in this year. Montero has been a top 4 hitter on the team. And a lot of people have had issues with Happ still being in Chicago. The reality is, he has raked RHP (126 wRC), and his 32% K rate against them is not too troublesome, more than offset by the power provided.
  15. Short went into an awful BABIP slump but he keeps working tons on walks. Really intrigued by him.
  16. I dig it Might as well give your only 2 good hitters the most AB
  17. So, the indoor bullpens are catching some blame for the first inning struggles, eh?
  18. That gives Eloy 14 walks to 13 Ks, but a 12:13 ratio with the IBB removed.
  19. i feel like you're very close to saying maddon needs to yell at the team On the contrary. Maddon has said multiple times that he doesn't want to overload his young players with information. If anything I'm blaming Maddon. There's so much information available on every single player and the league has surely uncovered much of it to neutralize our hitters. I'm not seeing enough of an answer from our guys to convince me they are making the right adjustments.
  20. I'm fairly convinced total lack of preparation is the culprit for our offensive suckitude. You got a guy coming in who's been taken to the woodshed and they got him looking like the deGrom of old.
  21. Forget the trade deadline. Poach the Yankees hitting coaches.
  22. Schwarber is only 140k votes from starting the ASG. It won't happen, but if it did, it would be hilarious to watch the collective meltdown of the masses. He could easily surpass Zobrist for 4th place if he goes on a little run. I'm surprised that many Cubs fans were actually honest about his season and didn't vote for him. OTOH I wish the whole team would sit it out.
