  1. Not to veer off topic: In ~80% of the games Soto actually started (98), he was placed in the 7th (40.8%) or 8th (38.8%) position in the batting order. Without looking, I'm going to assume the Cubs were probably the only team in baseball to consistently dump their team leader in OPS+ and wOBA at the bottom of the lineup.
  2. When? Last week? After the game the Good Year Blimp said that Rose is a pimp. I'm just glad he didn't have to use his A.K. Fact of the day: The Lakers beat the Supersonics 128 times in 211 total meetings.
  3. You're not setting the bar very high...

  5. From what I've seen he hits a lot of line drives, has a great OF arm, but has a Tony Gwynn like physique which will obviously limit him as a player. Seems like his issue is inconsistency. Inconsistent performance, inconsistent approach to the plate, etc. Thanks. When they started shopping Gorz my concern was that they wouldn't get value for him, but this trade sounds promising.
  6. I like Burgess' numbers. He seems to have decent on base skills for a 21 year old player. Can anyone more familiar with him share some scouting info? What kind of tools does he possess?
  7. I've changed my mind. Sign Fielder, trade for Pablo Sandoval and hire Paul Prudhomme to serve as Soto's personal trainer/nutritionist. Maybe pickup Ronnie Belliard to play 2B? Fattest infield in baseball in 2012.
  8. I'm not sure what fox is thinking, but these alternate camera angles on big plays really suck. In fact, they kinda suck on any play.
  9. A pedestrian 23 yd return from Hester. So much for Seattle's "field position game".
  10. That was rad. How confused are the national viewers/non-hockey fans?
  11. If the cubs have ~$40 mil to spend and two impact positions to fill (1B-3B), I don't think they could afford Pujols + a decent 3B (provided both are even available). Fielder + 3B may be more realistic, however I concur with Rob regarding that prospect. I have no interest in seeing a 300+ lbs Prince Fielder absorbing $20 million of payroll a season into his mid thirties.
  12. That is some Pop Warner [expletive]. Hilarious.
  13. This statement is almost universally true. Hopefully, we can anticipate more palatable inanity next week.
  14. He may give up fewer HRs simply by not facing AL east opponents so often. HR/FB AB/HR HR/9 2010 AL: 7.30% 35.1 0.97 2010 ALE*:9.10% 27.8 1.23 2010 NL: 7.20% 36.6 0.93 2010 NLC: 7.20% 36.6 0.93 The HR/9 above are HR hit per 9 innings by a given league/division, rather than the traditional HR allowed per 9 IP. Garza's HR allowed per 9 IP in 2010 were: vs. ALE: 1.74 vs. non-ALE opponents: 0.85 2010 season total: 1.23 44 % of Garzas innings came against the ALE last year, and in them he gave up 61% of his homers. That he underperformed compared to the rest of baseball vs. the ALE is concerning, but in the majority of his IP he gave up fewer HR/9 than the AL average. *Calculated to exclude TB hitters.
  15. Weren't Randy Wells-Ricky Vaughn comparisons being made last offseason, albeit in the context of "Randy Wells minor vision impairment will require him to wear big thick nerd-glasses like Ricky Vaughn".
  16. As a square, I often need assistance in parsing slang. Contextually I am reading "needs a day off", rather than "is jonesing for some coke" or "requires oral sex in order to perform at peak ability". Is this common baseball vernacular?
  17. His posting fee is going to be enormous.
  18. In 2012, the Cubs have $62.5 Mil. committed with 6 3rd year arb. eligibles, 1 2nd year and 2 1st years. Assuming Garza makes ~$10 mil. in arbitration, that leaves about ~$25-30 million (my estimate, not a "hard number", obviously) to spend on 2 enormous holes at at 1B and 3B. Considering this team's needs, this is a weird move. The prospects sent amount to an overpay, and although Garza is a good pitcher, is the difference between Garza and Wells/Gorzelanny/Cashner/etc. worth ~$10 mil. to a team trying to "rebuild"? Looking beyond 2012, the only contracts on the books are $19 mil. annual to Soriano (2013-2014) and an option year for Z in 2013. Directing their resources (prospects + cash spent this offseason) at Adrian Gonzales and signing him longterm seems like exactly what a "rebuilding" major market team should've done, unless by "rebuilding" Ricketts means "cutting payroll to Pittsburgh levels over the next 4 years".
  19. If by "a great knowledge of baseball" you mean "the svengali-like ability to make pedestrian observations appear to be the revelations of an oracle", and by "an edge" you mean "haughty dickishness", then Stone is your guy. If, on the other hand, you prefer a baseball broadcast to be more enjoyably than jury duty, you probably want to look elsewhere.
  20. Who are these starters? I'd say Garza, Dempster and Z LOL, looks more like Randy Wells, a vastly overpaid #4, and a petulant child to me. How is it that Garza, apropos of nothing, continues to garner comparison to Wells? Here's hoping we can resolve this in a tidy 5-6 pages, this time.
  21. Jesus Christ, anyone but Dan [expletive] Plesac.
  22. I wouldn't mind Judd as the color. His play-by-play skills are lacking, particularly in comparison to Pat, but I think he'd do fine providing a second voice in the booth. I prefer him to Otto.
  23. Andrew Wagner is now reporting that Jake Odorizzi is also included in the trade. Looking better and better for the Royals. Odorizzi put together a pretty nice season in A ball last year at age 20.
